“We all helped.”

He sounded proud.

I nodded once.

Then I walked into the hallway.

Nobody stopped me.

At the bottom of the staircase sat six more black trash bags.

One had a label written with black marker.

ELISA.

That single word somehow hurt more than the divorce papers.

I pulled out my phone.

Landen looked up.

“Who are you calling?”

“Someone who still understands what belongs to me.”

He gave a tired smile.

“Please don’t make this harder than it needs to be.”

I didn’t answer him.

I tapped one contact.

Emilia Croft.

She had handled my father’s estate several years earlier.

She answered before the second ring.

“Elisa?”

“Are you available?”

She heard something in my voice.

“What’s happened?”

I looked at another garbage bag sitting beside the front door.

My wedding album was sticking halfway out.

“I transferred two point four million dollars into my husband’s company yesterday.”

A pause.

“Go on.”

“This morning he served me with divorce papers, moved another woman into my kitchen, packed my belongings into trash bags, and says he’s keeping my son.”

Silence.

Then Emilia asked only one question.

“Has anyone signed anything today?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Her voice became firm.

“Don’t leave the house.”

I glanced toward the kitchen.

Landen was pretending not to listen.

Naomi wasn’t pretending.

“Don’t argue,” Emilia continued.

“Don’t sign anything. Don’t let anyone remove another bag. I’ll be there in thirty minutes.”

“Should I call the police?”

Another brief pause.

“Not yet.”

Then she asked,

“Elisa…the money you wired yesterday. Was it the secured loan your father arranged through the family trust?”

I looked toward the dining room.

Landen had stopped talking.

His head turned slightly in my direction.

He was listening now.

“Yes,” I said quietly.

Emilia didn’t raise her voice.

She simply replied,

“Then tell no one anything else until I arrive.”

The call ended.

I slipped my phone back into my pocket.

Landen walked over.

“Who was that?”

I picked up the garbage bag with my winter coat inside and set it gently beside the front door again.

“My attorney.”

For the first time that morning, the confidence disappeared from his face.

And for the first time since I walked into that kitchen, I felt the balance begin to shift.

Emilia Walked Through My Front Door

Landen looked at his watch.

“Your attorney isn’t going to change anything.”

No one answered him.

Naomi picked up her coffee again, though she never took another sip. Harold folded his arms near the kitchen island. Denise sat at the dining table as if she were waiting for movers to arrive.

I stayed beside the front door.

The black trash bags remained exactly where they had left them.

Thirty-two minutes later, a dark SUV stopped outside.

Emilia Croft stepped out carrying nothing more than a leather portfolio.

Behind her came a uniformed police officer.

Landen frowned.

“Why is there a cop?”

Emilia walked inside without raising her voice.

“Officer Brooks is here only to keep the peace while my client retrieves her property.”

Landen forced a smile.

“There’s been a misunderstanding.”

“Then today should be very simple,” Emilia replied.

She looked around the foyer.

Then at the trash bags.

Then at me.

“Have these been moved since we spoke?”

“No.”

She nodded once before turning toward Landen.

“I’d like to see the divorce papers.”

He handed them over confidently.

While she skimmed the first page, Officer Brooks quietly photographed the trash bags and the damaged picture frame sticking out of one of them.

No one objected.

Emilia closed the folder.

“My client won’t be signing these today.”

Landen shrugged.

“She doesn’t have to.”

“Good,” Emilia said. “That makes the next part easier.”

She opened her portfolio.

“Yesterday my client funded a secured emergency loan for your company.”

Harold leaned against the counter.

“Exactly. She already transferred the money.”

“She did.”

Emilia laid one document on the dining table.

“And because the loan was issued through the family trust established by Elisa’s late father, your company immediately became subject to the security agreement you signed.”

The room became quiet.

Landen blinked.

“What security agreement?”

Emilia looked directly at him.

“The one you signed electronically yesterday afternoon.”

His expression changed.

“That was just loan paperwork.”

“It was loan paperwork.”

She slid another page toward him.

“The first paragraph explains that the loan is secured by your company’s controlling shares until repayment.”

He reached for the document.
