The Morning After I Wired My Husband $2.4 Million to Save His Company, I Came Home to Divorce Papers, My Clothes Stuffed Into Black Trash Bags, and His Mistress Wearing My Robe Saying I’d Lose My Son—He Thought He Had Already Won Until He Heard Five Words That Changed Everything

Part 1 of 3

The first thing I saw was one of my black trash bags sitting beside the front door.

Not luggage.

Trash bags.

The kind we kept in the garage for yard waste.

One of them had my winter coat sticking out through a tear near the top.

I stood on the front porch for several seconds before I unlocked the door.

I had left before sunrise the previous morning to meet with my bank.

At 9:14 a.m., I authorized a wire transfer of $2.4 million to help my husband keep his manufacturing company from collapsing.

Twenty-four hours later, someone had packed my life into garbage bags.

I pushed the front door open.

Voices drifted from the kitchen.

Then I heard a woman laugh.

Not just any woman.

Naomi.

I knew her voice because Landen had introduced her six months earlier as a “marketing consultant.” She always smiled a little too warmly whenever she came by the house.

Now she was standing barefoot in my kitchen.

Wearing my white robe.

Holding my favorite coffee mug.

She didn’t even look embarrassed when she saw me.

Instead she smiled.

“Good morning.”

For a moment I honestly wondered whether I’d walked into the wrong house.

Then Landen stepped into the kitchen.

He wasn’t surprised either.

He looked almost relieved.

“You’re home.”

I looked from him to Naomi.

Then back to the robe.

“Why is she wearing my clothes?”

Naomi slowly set the mug on the island.

She didn’t answer.

Landen did.

“We need to talk.”

I had heard those four words before.

Nobody ever used them to make someone’s day better.

Before I could answer, Harold and Denise—my in-laws—came from the hallway.

Harold carried another black trash bag.

Denise held one of my framed college photos.

She dropped it into the bag without looking at me.

The glass cracked.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

Denise zipped the bag closed.

“Packing.”

She said it as casually as if she were folding towels.

“You have forty-eight hours.”

I looked at Landen.

He didn’t stop her.

He didn’t even look uncomfortable.

Instead he pulled a manila envelope from the kitchen counter and slid it toward me.

“These are divorce papers.”

I didn’t pick them up.

My eyes stayed on him.

“Yesterday I transferred two point four million dollars into your company.”

He nodded once.

“I know.”

That answer hit harder than if he had yelled.

I stared at him.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

Nothing else.

Just yes.

As though yesterday and today had nothing to do with each other.

Cedric came running down the hallway.

He was eight years old.

Still wearing dinosaur pajamas.

He smiled when he saw me.

“Mom!”

He wrapped both arms around my waist.

I hugged him automatically.

Behind him, Denise sighed loudly.

“He’s staying here.”

I looked up.

“Excuse me?”

Landen folded his arms.

“Cedric needs stability.”

I actually laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe what I’d heard.

“You’re divorcing me, moving another woman into our house, and you think this is stability?”

Naomi finally spoke.

Her voice stayed perfectly calm.

“Children adjust.”

Cedric looked back and forth between us.

He tightened his grip on my hand.

“Mom?”

I crouched beside him.

“Buddy, can you go upstairs for a few minutes?”

He hesitated.

Then nodded.

When he disappeared upstairs, I stood again.

No one spoke.

The kitchen suddenly felt much quieter.

I noticed little things.

My slippers were gone.

Naomi’s purse sat where mine usually did.

Someone had moved our family photo off the mantel.

In its place sat a vase of fresh white lilies.

I hated lilies.

Landen knew that.

“When were you planning to tell me?” I asked.

“Today.”

“After moving her in?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“This doesn’t have to become ugly.”

I looked around the kitchen.

My robe.

My mug.

My house.

My belongings inside garbage bags.

I almost asked him whether he could hear himself.

Instead I asked something simpler.

“Who packed my clothes?”

Harold answered.
