Passersby walked past the pregnant woman who was asking for help, pretending not to notice her please

Part 2 of 2

“You stayed…”

“Of course I did.”

“The doctor said you saved us.”

I held her hand. “Everything will be fine now. I promise.”

That night, I felt something I hadn’t felt in years—hope. The next morning, I woke up early, bought healthy food and a tiny yellow baby romper with daisies, then returned to the clinic.

Alena lit up when she saw me. “You came!”

“I said I would,” I smiled. “How are you feeling?”

“Much better. The doctor says I can go home, but I need to rest for a few days.”

“And who will take care of you?”

“I’ll manage.”

“Nope,” I said. “You’re coming with me. I’ve got space, and you need to lie down and stay off your feet.”

She hesitated. “We barely know each other… Why are you doing this?”

I didn’t have a logical answer—only a feeling. “Sometimes fate brings people together for a reason,” I said. “And to be honest… my daughter barely calls. I miss being needed.”

“You’re not an old woman,” she said, almost angrily.

“It’s not about that,” I smiled. “We need each other right now. So no arguments.”

And she didn’t argue.

What started as a couple of days turned into two months. Alena stayed with me, helped when she could, and I made sure she rested. We shared meals, stories, tea, and dreams.

Then one night, she clutched her belly. “I think… it’s starting!”

Hospital. Ambulance. Panic. For six long hours I waited, praying though I’d never been one to pray.

Finally, a doctor came out. “Congratulations, you have a healthy granddaughter. Three kilos six hundred.”

I didn’t correct her.

Now Alena and little Sofia—yes, that’s her name—live with me. We walk in the park, neighbors admire them, and I smile, thinking:

Sometimes all it takes is to stop. Look someone in the eyes. Offer a hand. Behind that one moment could be a new life. A new family. A new reason to wake up each day.

And I know now—I’ll never pass by someone in need again.

Even if the whole world looks away.
