Passersby walked past the pregnant woman who was asking for help, pretending not to notice her please

Part 1 of 2

I never imagined that at 62, I’d become something like a savior. I couldn’t have guessed that a single moment would completely transform my life and fill it with a sense of purpose I hadn’t felt in years.

It was a warm, sunny day in late September. I was heading home from the store, dragging a heavy bag, and lost in thought. Since my husband left three years ago, every walk felt like another quiet reminder of solitude. “Another day… just lived through it,” I thought, counting the familiar forty steps to the bus stop.

But on the fortieth step, something caught my attention.

A young pregnant girl stood nearby, clutching a bench, her face twisted in pain and fear. She whispered for help, but no one responded.

People looked away, checked their phones, or walked faster.

“Just keep walking, Sofya,” a voice in my head said. “It’s not your problem.”

But something in her eyes—fear mixed with hope—stopped me. Her trembling hands pressed protectively over her belly, and suddenly, I saw my daughter Natasha, now far away in Canada, barely calling anymore.

“Wait!” I called out, turning back.

Her eyes filled with gratitude. “What’s wrong?” I asked.

“Everything’s spinning… I was on my way to the women’s clinic… Then everything went blurry…”

I helped her sit, dabbed the sweat from her forehead, and asked which clinic she meant.

“Zvezdnaya… third consultation,” she whispered.

“No way you’re going alone,” I said, already dialing for a taxi.

I sat beside her, handed her water, and asked her name.

“Alena,” she said. “Everyone pretended I wasn’t even here.”

“Sometimes people ignore others not out of cruelty, but because they don’t know what to do,” I said gently. “So they hide behind indifference.”

Tears filled her eyes as she told me her husband had left when he found out she was expecting a girl. “He said he didn’t marry to raise daughters.”

I squeezed her hand. “His loss. Girls are special—they love more deeply and stay closer.”

At the clinic, her condition worsened. I yelled for help, and nurses rushed her inside. I stayed in the hallway, strangely unable to leave. Something connected us—something silent but real.

Thirty minutes later, a doctor approached. “Are you a relative?”

“No,” I replied. “Just someone who helped.”

“It’s good you did,” she said. “She has severe toxicosis and increased uterine tone. She could’ve gone into premature labor.”

“She asked to see you—room three, but only briefly.”

Alena lay pale and exhausted. She opened her eyes and smiled faintly when she saw me.
