Part 3 of 3

The Key Still Worked

Two weeks after Eric left, I heard his key turn at 4:17 on a Sunday afternoon.

I was sitting at the kitchen table.

Hannah was on the couch feeding Mia.

Deborah stood near the living room window with Zoe against her shoulder.

Ava was asleep beside me.

The front door opened.

“I’m home.”

Eric stepped inside.

He was tan.

He looked rested.

He was smiling.

Then he saw the boxes.

His smile disappeared.

“What’s all this?”

Nobody answered.

He looked at Hannah.

Then his mother.

“Mom?”

Deborah kept rubbing Zoe’s back.

Eric dropped his suitcase handle.

The same black suitcase rolled several inches before stopping against the wall.

I walked over and handed him an envelope.

“What’s this?”

“Open it.”

Inside were printed screenshots from the account.

The pool.

The bar.

The Cabo countdown.

ESCAPE COMPLETE.

He flipped through them quickly.

“Rachel, these are jokes.”

I said nothing.

“Seriously. The guys joke like this.”

He looked at Hannah.

“You went digging through my private accounts?”

Hannah didn’t answer.

Then he turned to his mother.

“Mom, tell her.”

Deborah looked at him.

“Tell her what?”

“That I’ve been struggling.”

Deborah’s face didn’t change.

“Have you?”

Eric stared at her.

“You know I have anxiety.”

“I know you went to Cabo.”

“That’s not fair.”

I picked up one of the screenshots.

“You planned this trip months ago.”

He looked at the paper.

“I didn’t know the babies would come early.”

“They were already home.”

“I needed a break.”

I nodded.

“Five days after I gave birth.”

“Rachel—”

“You told me to be quieter while I was delivering them because I was stressing you out.”

His eyes moved toward Hannah.

Then his mother.

He lowered his voice.

“Can we talk privately?”

“No.”

That was the only word I needed.

Nobody Explained It Away This Time

Eric walked toward his mother.

“You’re seriously taking her side?”

Deborah shifted Zoe higher against her shoulder.

“There aren’t sides.”

“Apparently there are.”

“There are consequences.”

Eric laughed once.

It wasn’t amusement.

“Unbelievable.”

He pointed toward the boxes.

“You packed my stuff?”

“I did.”

“You’re my mother.”

“I know.”

He looked at her for several seconds.

“If you love me, help me.”

Deborah glanced down at Zoe.

Then back at her son.

“I am helping you.”

Eric shook his head.

“How?”

“By finally stopping myself from protecting you from what you do.”

The room became quiet.

Eric looked at me again.

“So what? You want a divorce because I took one trip?”

I slid the separation papers across the kitchen island.

“No.”

He didn’t touch them.

“Then what is this?”

“It’s because when things became difficult, you left.”

“For two weeks.”

“Yes.”

I looked at the black suitcase beside the door.

“And in those two weeks, you showed me exactly what life with you would look like whenever I needed you most.”

He started to argue.

Then Ava cried.

All four adults looked toward her.

I picked her up.

Eric didn’t move.

That seemed to end the conversation.

He carried the first box outside.

Then another.

Then another.

Nobody stopped him.

His suitcase was the last thing he took.

The wheels made the same sound across the hardwood floor they had made two weeks earlier.

This time, I didn’t ask him to stay.

Three Bassinets Near Dawn

A few months later, I woke just before five in the morning.

The house was quiet.

That was still unusual enough to make me check the monitor.

Ava was asleep.

Mia had one hand beside her face.

Zoe had kicked off one sock.

I walked downstairs.

Hannah was asleep on the couch after staying late to help with the evening bottles.

Deborah’s coat hung beside the front door.

She had stayed over too and was sleeping in the guest room.

There were bottles drying beside the sink.

The feeding chart was still taped to the refrigerator, though we didn’t really need it anymore.

Near the wall where Eric’s boxes had once been stacked, there was nothing.

Just three small diaper bags ready for the morning.

For a long time, I had been afraid that ending my marriage meant I was taking a family away from my daughters.

Then I looked around at the people who had shown up at two in the morning, packed bottles before work, slept on couches, changed diapers, washed laundry, and stayed when staying was inconvenient.

I went upstairs and stood beside the three cribs.

The house Eric once said he wanted was finally full.

Just not with the people I had expected.
