Happy Soul Moral Stories

My Husband Cried When We Learned We Were Having Triplets and Promised He’d Be “The Best Dad in the World”—Five Days After Our Daughters Came Home, He Packed for Cabo and Told Me “I Need a Break Before I Lose Myself”—I Asked, “Who Gives Me a Break?” He Had No Answer Except “You’ll Figure It Out,” Six Days Later, a Message About a Bar Tab and a Hidden Instagram Account Made His Entire Story Start Falling Apart

Part 2 of 3

I sent him one photograph of the girls sleeping together.

He reacted with a heart.

That was it.

On the sixth day, while I was sitting on the couch feeding Mia, my phone buzzed.

The message was from Eric’s friend, Luke.

Dude, I paid your bar tab again. Send me the money before Jen sees it. And stop posting everything on the kid-free Finsta. Rachel isn’t stupid.

I read it twice.

Then I took a screenshot.

My hands were shaking enough that the second screenshot came out while I was accidentally lowering the volume.

I called Hannah.

She came over after work.

I handed her the phone.

She read the message.

“What’s a kid-free Finsta?”

“Apparently my husband has one.”

Hannah sat down beside me.

“Do you know his usernames?”

I knew three.

None worked.

Then she searched combinations of his college nickname and the number he had worn playing baseball.

A private account appeared.

The profile picture was Eric wearing sunglasses beside a swimming pool.

The bio said:

NO DIAPERS. NO BEDTIMES. NO PROBLEMS.

Hannah looked at me.

“Rachel.”

I nodded.

“Request it.”

She didn’t.

Instead, she searched the username online and found cached reposts from friends who had tagged the account.

Enough of it was public through other people’s posts.

Enough.

There were pictures going back more than a year.

Eric at bars.

Eric on golf trips I had been told were work events.

Eric at a lake house.

Captions joking about his “temporary bachelor schedule.”

Then Hannah found Cabo.

A photograph showed Eric stretched across a pool chair with a drink in his hand.

It had been posted three days after he left us.

ESCAPE COMPLETE.

I zoomed in until the letters filled my screen.

No mention of anxiety.

No mention of struggling.

No mention of his wife or three newborn daughters.

Hannah found another post from months earlier.

A countdown to Cabo.

The trip had been planned before I gave birth.

“He knew,” I said.

Hannah put my phone down.

Neither of us spoke for a while.

From the bassinet, Zoe made a small squeaking sound in her sleep.

I picked her up.

“Maybe I should wait until he comes home.”

Hannah looked at me.

“Why?”

“They’re his daughters.”

“Yes.”

“They deserve their father.”

Hannah adjusted the blanket around Zoe’s feet.

“They deserve a father who wants to be here.”

His Mother Already Knew

Two days later, I remembered something Eric’s mother had said at my baby shower.

Deborah had been helping me carry gifts to the car.

Before closing my trunk, she put her hand on my arm.

“Call me if you need anything after the babies come.”

Then she hesitated.

“Especially if Eric disappears.”

I had laughed.

She hadn’t.

Standing in my kitchen eight months later, I finally called her.

“Deborah?”

“Rachel?”

“Eric went to Cabo.”

Silence.

“When?”

Another pause.

Then:

“My son left, didn’t he?”

Not What happened?

Not Are you sure?

She already knew.

Deborah arrived that afternoon carrying an overnight bag and a folder.

She kissed each baby on the forehead.

Then she sat across from me at the kitchen table.

“He has done versions of this before.”

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

She folded her hands.

She told me about a girlfriend Eric had lived with after college.

When her father became seriously ill, Eric suddenly needed “space.”

Another girlfriend had lost her job. Eric spent three weeks staying with friends because the apartment had become “too negative.”

Deborah had defended him both times.

“I told myself he was young.”

She looked toward the three bassinets.

“He’s thirty-three now.”

Then she slid the folder across the table.

Inside was the business card of a family-law attorney.

I didn’t call immediately.

I fed Ava.

Changed Mia.

Put Zoe down.

Then I picked up the card.

That afternoon, I called.

By the end of the week, I had saved every screenshot I could find.

One account.

One clear piece of evidence.

One decision.

When I met the attorney, she asked one question that stayed with me.

“Since Eric left, who has been taking care of the children?”

“Me.”

“Who handles nights?”

“Mostly me.”

“Appointments?”

“Me.”

She wrote something down.

“Then keep doing what you’re doing, and keep records.”

A few days later, I signed a draft separation agreement.

When I came home, cardboard boxes were stacked in the hallway.

Deborah was standing in our bedroom holding one of Eric’s shirts.

“What are you doing?”

“Packing.”

“Your son’s things?”

She folded the shirt.

“Especially my son’s things.”

I almost changed the locks.

Then I stopped.

I wanted his key to work.

I wanted Eric to open that door believing he was returning to the same exhausted wife he had left behind.

So I left the lock exactly as it was.
