Part 2 of 3

You have no idea what you’ve started. Charles is furious. Fix this before somebody gets hurt.

A second message followed.

That company belongs to your father. Lucas was going to ruin everything.

I handed the phone to Samantha, who helped preserve the messages.

“What does she mean about Lucas?” I asked.

Samantha hesitated, then showed me a list of businesses that had received questionable payments.

One was a consulting company registered in Courtney’s name.

I looked from the document to Lucas’s letter.

“She wasn’t just helping Dad with paperwork, was she?”

“We don’t know the full extent of her involvement yet,” Samantha answered. “But her company received payments that need explaining.”

I was still studying the records when a nurse entered to check my monitors. Another contraction had begun, stronger than the last.

Samantha moved the documents aside.

“Victoria, we can finish this later.”

I gripped the edge of the bed.

For the first time that day, I stopped thinking about the money.

My daughter was coming.

And Lucas wasn’t there to hold my hand.

PART 2 — WHAT LUCAS LEFT BEHIND

Amelia arrived shortly after midnight, several weeks before her due date. The doctors had monitored us closely throughout the evening, and when labor progressed, the room filled with people who spoke calmly and moved with practiced purpose.

I remember gripping a nurse’s hand and asking her to tell me the truth about my baby. She promised that the team would keep me informed, then reminded me to concentrate on the next contraction.

When Amelia finally cried, I started sobbing.

She was small and needed extra monitoring, but the neonatal team reassured me that she was receiving the care she needed. I saw her tiny face briefly before they moved her for examination.

“Hello, sweetheart,” I whispered. “I’m your mom.”

Her nose looked exactly like Lucas’s.

We’d chosen her name together one evening while painting the nursery. Lucas had insisted on Amelia because he liked how it sounded with Gallagher, and I’d chosen Rose after my mother.

I had imagined him holding her first.

Instead, I lay there listening to the nurses, trying to believe I could give our daughter the childhood we’d planned without him.

Samantha visited the following afternoon. She brought a small photograph of Lucas that I’d kept in his office and placed it beside my bed.

She also told me the police had obtained footage from our doorbell camera.

The recording showed Charles forcing me through the doorway and leaving me outside. It also captured Courtney laughing while I told them my water had broken.

Dad had claimed he’d merely been trying to calm me down.

The footage contradicted his account.

Investigators were pursuing the assault allegations and examining the questionable financial documents. Charles had been arrested, although Samantha cautioned me that charges and findings were separate matters.

I looked at Amelia’s photograph on my phone.

“I don’t want any of this following her,” I said.

Samantha sat beside me.

“Then we’ll make decisions based on protecting both of you, not on keeping your father comfortable.”

For once, I didn’t argue.

THE RECORDING LUCAS MADE

Several days after Amelia’s birth, Samantha brought a tablet to the hospital. She explained that Lucas had recorded a message before his accident and instructed her to show it to me if anyone interfered with his business interests or pressured me over our property.

I wasn’t sure I could bear hearing his voice.

But I asked her to play it.

Lucas appeared on the screen wearing his favorite navy sweater. He was sitting at his desk, with the window behind him and a stack of files I’d often complained about beside his keyboard.

“Hey, sweetheart,” he began, smiling tiredly. “I hope you’re watching this because Samantha’s being overly cautious and everything turned out fine.”

I covered my mouth.

His expression became serious.

“I’ve found things in the company accounts that don’t make sense. Charles keeps telling me to stop asking questions, and I don’t like the way he’s talking about you or the house.”

He glanced toward the office door before continuing.

“I should’ve told you more. I kept thinking I could straighten this out without making you choose between me and your father.”

Tears ran down my face.

“If anyone tells you that you have to sign something to protect the family, call Samantha first. You don’t owe anybody your home, your inheritance, or your peace just because you’re related to them.”

He paused, looking directly into the camera.

“And if something happens to me before the audit is finished, please make sure the investigators know about the Rochester meeting. I don’t want you jumping to conclusions, but I’ve been getting calls that worry me.”

The recording ended.

For several moments, I couldn’t speak.

“Did he think someone might hurt him?” I finally asked.

Samantha folded her hands.

“He was concerned about interference with the audit. We don’t know whether that had anything to do with the crash.”

“But he was going to Rochester when he died.”

“Yes.”

I looked at Lucas’s photograph.

He’d been trying to protect us while I was busy choosing nursery curtains and wondering whether our daughter would inherit his blue eyes.

“Please make sure the police see that recording,” I said.

Samantha nodded.

“They will.”

THE CALL COURTNEY SHOULDN’T HAVE MADE

Courtney contacted me three days later from a number I didn’t recognize. By then, I was recovering steadily, and Amelia’s doctors were cautiously optimistic about her progress.

I answered because Samantha had asked me to preserve any messages or attempts to contact me.

“Victoria, it’s Courtney.”

“What do you want?”

She began crying.

“Charles told me everything was legal. He said Lucas was trying to take away the company he built.”

I looked at the notebook where I’d been recording Amelia’s feeding schedule.

“Then why did you need documents with my signature?”

She went silent.

“I didn’t sign anything for you,” she said eventually.

“I didn’t ask whether you signed them. I asked why those documents existed.”

Her voice became sharper.

“You don’t understand what kind of pressure Charles was under.”

“Then explain it.”

She hesitated.

“He borrowed money to keep the business going. Lucas wouldn’t approve the transfers he needed, and the people waiting for repayment weren’t willing to give him more time.”

I sat upright.

“What people?”

“I don’t know all their names.”

“Courtney, you own one of the companies that received money from Baldwin-Gallagher.”

She began speaking quickly, insisting the consulting payments had been legitimate and that Charles had arranged everything.

Then she said something that made me stop breathing.

“We never wanted Lucas to die.”

I gripped the phone.

“What did you just say?”

“I meant nobody wanted any of this to happen.”

“Did you know someone was going to confront him?”

Her breathing changed.

“I have to go.”

The call ended.

I immediately contacted Samantha and told her exactly what Courtney had said. She helped me document the time and number and passed the information to the detective handling the investigation.

I wanted to believe Courtney had spoken carelessly.

But I couldn’t forget the way she’d said we.

THE TRUCK ON THE HIGHWAY

Eleven days after Amelia’s birth, Detective Mark Reynolds visited me at the hospital. He explained that investigators were reviewing new evidence relating to Lucas’s collision, including footage recovered from a highway maintenance camera.

The recording showed Lucas driving normally before a dark pickup approached from behind. The pickup moved dangerously close, forcing his vehicle toward the shoulder.

The footage didn’t establish whether the vehicles had touched, but the detective said it justified further investigation.

He placed a still image on the table.

I recognized the pickup immediately.

It belonged to the company’s maintenance division, and Raymond Pike, Dad’s longtime operations manager, drove it regularly.

Raymond had attended Lucas’s funeral.

He’d stood beside me afterward and said he couldn’t imagine what I was going through.

“Are you saying Raymond was there?” I asked.

“We’re investigating who was driving and why that vehicle was following your husband.”

The night before Lucas died, he’d stepped outside to answer a phone call during dinner. When he came back, he was unusually quiet.

I’d asked whether something was wrong.

“Just business,” he’d said, kissing my forehead.
