Happy Soul Moral Stories

While I Was Fighting for My Life in Emergency Heart Surgery, My Husband Turned Off His Phone and Stood at an Altar With Another Woman. I Signed the Consent Forms Alone and Made Just One Call to My Lawyer. Nine Days Later, When My Husband Rushed Home From His Honeymoon, He Found Something Waiting for Him That Made Him Panic.

Part 2 of 3

I sat on the edge of my bed.

My incision hurt when I breathed too deeply.

Martin remained standing.

“There’s something else.”

I looked up.

He placed one sheet of paper on the dresser.

It showed a series of transfers from Whitmore Holdings into a business connected to Brooke.

The total on that page alone was $38 million.

“Is this company money?”

“That’s what we need to establish.”

“How much altogether?”

“We don’t know yet.”

I looked toward Brooke’s jacket hanging beside my empty section of closet.

“Find out.”

Nathan was in St. Barts when the first accounts connected to the disputed transactions were restricted pending review.

Rebecca knew before I did.

She entered my kitchen one morning carrying coffee.

“Nathan is coming home.”

“Why?”

“His office called. He’s furious.”

I put my medication organizer beside the sink.

“About me?”

Rebecca gave me a look.

“About the money.”

That answered the question.

He arrived that evening.

Nathan walked through the front door without knocking.

He looked exhausted.

Not heart-surgery exhausted.

Vacation interrupted exhausted.

“Claire.”

I remained seated at the kitchen island.

“You should have called before coming.”

He stared at me.

His eyes moved toward the medication bottles.

Then toward the incision visible above the neckline of my shirt.

His face changed.

“Jesus.”

I said nothing.

“You really had surgery?”

That question did more than any apology could have done.

“Yes.”

“I thought Rebecca was exaggerating.”

“The hospital called you.”

“My phone was with my security team during the ceremony.”

“And afterward?”

He pulled out a chair.

I didn’t invite him to sit.

He sat anyway.

“Claire, I handled this badly.”

I looked at him.

“You got married.”

He rubbed both hands over his face.

“It wasn’t legally binding.”

“You stood at an altar and exchanged vows with another woman.”

“I can fix this.”

“Which part?”

He looked up.

“Us.”

I slid one sheet of paper across the island.

It was the notice Martin had prepared concerning the house.

Nathan read it.

His jaw tightened.

“You froze the collateral.”

“My house isn’t your collateral.”

“Claire, you don’t understand how the company financing works.”

“Then explain why my signature isn’t on it.”

He didn’t answer.

That silence was the first useful thing Nathan had given me in months.

I stood carefully.

“Going forward, stop assuming you have the right to make decisions about my property or my life.”

“Claire—”

“Martin will contact your attorney.”

Nathan remained at the island.

I walked upstairs.

Halfway up, I had to stop because my heart was beating too fast.

I held the railing and waited.

When I looked down again, Nathan was still sitting beneath the family photograph he had apparently forgotten to remove.

For once, he wasn’t deciding what happened next.

The Woman in the Wedding Dress Came Looking for $180 Million

Brooke didn’t come to see me.

She went straight to Nathan’s office.

I learned what happened afterward because Nathan called me that afternoon.

I almost ignored him.

Martin was sitting across from me at the dining table, so I put the call on speaker.

Nathan didn’t say hello.

“Did you know Brooke’s company accounts were going to be restricted?”

“No.”

“Don’t play games with me.”

Martin lifted one hand, warning me not to argue.

“Talk to my attorney.”

Nathan lowered his voice.

“She says you’re trying to destroy her company.”

“I haven’t spoken to Brooke.”

“Then why are people asking about one hundred eighty million dollars?”

Martin’s head lifted.

I looked at him.

Neither of us spoke for a second.

“What one hundred eighty million?” I asked.

Nathan went quiet.

That was how I first learned the number.

Not from an investigator.

Not from a secret file.

From my husband accidentally saying too much.

Martin reached for his notebook.

“Nathan,” I said, “where did the money go?”

“This conversation is over.”

He hung up.

It wasn’t over.

The review eventually showed that the transfers connected to Brooke and her businesses were far larger than the first records suggested.

Some had legitimate business descriptions.

Others didn’t.

An apartment.

Vehicles.

Consulting payments to people connected to Brooke.

Money transferred into accounts used by relatives.

Martin kept the explanation simple.

“The question isn’t whether Nathan was allowed to spend money. The question is whether corporate money was used for purposes the company never approved.”

That I understood.

And I had another reason to care.

I owned twenty-three percent of Whitmore Holdings.

My father had bought those shares long before Nathan became CEO.

Nathan used to joke that I was his quietest shareholder.

He stopped finding that funny.

Two weeks later, Brooke finally called me.

“We need to talk woman to woman.”

“No, we don’t.”

“Nathan hasn’t told you everything.”

“That’s between you and Nathan.”

Her voice sharpened.

“I’m pregnant.”

I held the phone away from my ear for a second.

Then brought it back.

“Okay.”

She seemed confused.

“That’s all you have to say?”

“What would you like me to say?”

“It’s Nathan’s baby.”

“Then Nathan has responsibilities to your child.”

“You don’t care?”

I looked down at the plastic medication organizer on my kitchen counter.

The same one Rebecca had placed there the morning Nathan came home.

“The baby hasn’t done anything to me, Brooke.”

She didn’t answer.

“You and Nathan need to figure out the rest yourselves.”

I ended the call.

For the first time since the hospital, I didn’t check whether Nathan called afterward.

Nathan Walked Into the Shareholder Meeting Expecting His Usual Seat

Whitmore Holdings held its annual shareholder meeting six weeks later.

I had attended only twice before.

Usually I signed the paperwork and stayed home.

That year I arrived ten minutes early.

Nathan was already there.

He walked toward me immediately.

“Don’t do this here.”

“Where would you prefer?”

“Privately.”

“You had that option.”
