We reviewed my existing documents.

Bennett was the primary beneficiary of most of my estate.

He was also listed as my financial power of attorney if I became unable to manage my own affairs.

That arrangement had made perfect sense six years earlier.

Now it terrified me.

“Can we change everything?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Then change it.”

Elaine arranged an appointment for Monday after I returned home.

Before hanging up, she gave me one more piece of advice.

“Do not tell them what you know until your accounts are secure.”

I intended to follow it.

Then Lacey Showed Me the House

Thursday afternoon, Lacey surprised me by asking whether I wanted to go shopping.

Instead, she drove twenty minutes north and pulled into a new housing development.

“I want your opinion on something,” she said.

She parked in front of a large two-story home with pale stone walls and three garage doors.

A real estate agent greeted us inside.

That was when I realized this was not an impulsive visit.

Lacey already had an appointment.

She walked through the house as though she had been there before.

In the kitchen, she ran her hand across the marble island.

“Bennett loves this layout.”

I looked at the price sheet.

The house cost more than $900,000.

“That is quite a jump from your current house.”

Lacey smiled.

“We’re planning ahead.”

“For what?”

Her expression tightened.

“Bennett has some future assets coming eventually.”

There it was.

Not grief.

Not family.

Assets.

I folded the price sheet and placed it back on the counter.

“Future assets can be unpredictable.”

She laughed.

“Not these.”

I looked directly at her.

She had no idea how much that answer told me.

One More Charge

That night, another transaction appeared.

$3,500.

A deposit to the same housing development Lacey had shown me.

I felt something inside me go cold.

They had not merely been talking about my money.

They were already using it to plan their future.

I took screenshots.

I downloaded the receipt.

Then I called the bank and authorized the immediate cancellation of my card and removal of every device except my own.

The representative confirmed that Bennett’s phone had been connected to my account using credentials entered several weeks earlier.

I changed every password.

Then I slept better than I had in days.

Friday morning, I carried my suitcase downstairs at 6:30.

Bennett stared at it.

“Where are you going?”

“Home.”

Lacey came out of the hallway.

“What? Why?”

I placed my bag beside the front door.

“I have some things to take care of.”

Bennett frowned.

“You never said anything.”

“Neither did you.”

The room went quiet.

His face changed.

He knew.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

“Mom, what is that supposed to mean?”

I picked up my purse.

“It means I have a flight at nine.”

The Call Came Before I Landed

By the time my flight reached Ohio, I had seventeen missed calls.

Eleven from Bennett.

Six from Lacey.

There were also text messages.

The first few sounded concerned.

Then confused.

Then angry.

Bennett finally wrote:

“Why did you shut off the card connected to my phone?”

I stared at those words for a long time.

Not: What happened?

Not: Was your account compromised?

He had answered my biggest question for me.

I wrote only one reply.

“We will talk when I am ready.”

Monday Morning Changed Everything

At 9:00 Monday morning, I sat across from Elaine in her office.

By noon, Bennett was removed as my financial power of attorney.

My estate documents were revised.

A portion of my assets would eventually go into an educational trust for Oliver, protected from parental access.

Another portion would support two organizations Richard and I had cared about for years.

Bennett would still receive something.

But nowhere near what he had expected.

More importantly, he would never again have access to my accounts.

That afternoon, the bank completed its investigation.

The records showed that multiple purchases had been made through Bennett’s device.

I asked the bank to reverse what it could.
