“We’ll Be Back in Five Minutes,” My Husband Said Before Driving Away With My Phone, Wallet, and ID, Leaving Me Alone at a Desert Gas Station for a Viral Prank—So I Accepted a Stranger’s Ride, Vanished Without a Word, and Years Later He Showed Up Begging Me to Hear What Had Happened After I Left

Part 2 of 3

“Can you help me?”

She didn’t ask why.

She didn’t ask whose fault it was.

She only asked one question.

“Where are you?”

I looked around.

A weather-beaten highway sign.

A faded gas station logo.

Miles of desert.

I told her everything I could see.

She listened quietly.

When I finished, she said,

“Stay exactly where you are.”

“I’m coming.”

“It’s four hours away,” I said.

“Then you’ll wait four hours.”

The line went silent.

For the first time all afternoon, I believed someone was actually coming.

Kyle Finally Called

Nearly two hours later, the station’s landline rang.

The cashier waved me over.

“It’s for you.”

I picked up.

Kyle was laughing before I said hello.

“Okay, okay. The prank’s over.”

I didn’t answer.

“Lena?”

Silence.

He kept talking.

“You should’ve seen your face. Brad already finished editing. This one’s gonna explode online.”

I looked through the dusty window toward the highway.

Still no sign of them.

“Where are you?” he asked.

I finally spoke.

“Why?”

He laughed again.

“Because we’re coming back.”

I looked at the water bottle still lying beside the ice machine.

Dust had settled over the clear plastic.

“You already left.”

Another pause.

Then Kyle sighed like I was being difficult.

“Don’t make this into something bigger than it is.”

“You stranded me in the desert with no phone.”

“You knew we’d come back.”

I closed my eyes.

For years I had accepted that sentence in different forms.

You knew I didn’t mean it.

You knew it was a joke.

You knew I loved you.

This time it sounded different.

Because I no longer believed it.

“Don’t wait there,” he said. “We’re almost—”

I hung up.

The cashier looked at me carefully.

“Everything okay?”

I handed him the receiver.

“No.”

Then I walked back outside.

The water bottle was still there.

I picked it up for the first time that afternoon.

Not because I wanted the water.

Because I wanted to remember exactly where I had decided I would never get back into Kyle’s truck again.

Almost two hours later, an old blue SUV pulled into the station.

A silver-haired woman stepped out before the engine stopped.

She wrapped both arms around me without asking a single question.

“Come on,” Aunt May said softly.

“Let’s go home.”

I turned once toward the empty highway.

Kyle never came back before I left.

Aunt May Never Asked Me to Explain

Aunt May lived in a small coastal town near Rockport, Texas, where everyone seemed to know everyone else.

She didn’t ask me to tell my story during the drive.

She stopped once for coffee.

Once for sandwiches.

And once because she noticed I had fallen asleep against the passenger window.

When we finally reached her little blue house overlooking the bay, she unlocked the front door and carried one of the spare blankets from the hallway closet.

“The guest room is ready.”

I looked at her.

“You already made the bed?”

She smiled.

“I never stripped it after your last visit. I always hoped you’d come back someday.”

That night I borrowed one of her old T-shirts and slept almost twelve hours.

The next morning she placed an envelope on the kitchen table.

Inside was a new prepaid phone.

A debit card linked to a small account she had opened for me.

And a handwritten note.

“Nothing here is forever. It’s only until you can stand on your own.”

No lectures.

No pity.

Just a beginning.

Within two weeks I found work at a local bookstore.

Six months later I rented a tiny apartment overlooking the marina.

I legally changed my last name back to Morgan.

Eventually I stopped searching my own name online.

I no longer wanted to know what Kyle was uploading.

The dusty water bottle from that Arizona gas station sat on a shelf inside my closet.

I never drank from it.
