She moved closer, her voice controlled but unsteady.
“When Finn was two, he got sick in the middle of the night. I had just lost another job because a client recognized my name. I sold my mother’s ring to cover the hospital bill.”
Julian’s hands went cold. “Rowan…”
“When he was three, he asked why other families had a dad around. I told him every family looks different, and that it didn’t mean ours had less love.”
Tears slipped down her cheeks.
“When he was four, he started saving coins he found at home because he thought that if we had enough money, I wouldn’t worry anymore.”
Julian reached toward her. Rowan stepped back.
“Don’t touch me.”
His hand stopped in the air.
“I can make this right.”
“You can’t buy the birthdays you missed. You can’t give me back the nights when he was frightened and I was trying to reassure him while wondering how I’d pay the bills.”
“Let me try.”
“Start by telling the truth.”
The Recording No One Had Seen
While Rowan spoke with Julian, his chief of staff, Peter, received a call from Crossline’s security office. The company had recovered the original recordings from the scandal that had ended Rowan’s career.
The video shared with the press three years earlier had been altered before it became public.
In the full recording, Rowan wasn’t attacking Celeste. She was defending her.
During a rehearsal, a producer had insisted on filming a scene without the safety measures the performers had requested. Celeste had refused to continue. Rowan had stepped in and demanded that the production pause until the crew addressed the issue.
Someone removed the beginning of the exchange and kept only the few seconds when Rowan raised her voice. Edited without context, the clip made her look spiteful and arrogant.
Peter traced the first upload to an account associated with Celeste’s personal agency. The company that had certified the clip as genuine had been paid through an intermediary connected to Celeste’s representative.
He called Julian immediately.
“We found evidence the video was manipulated.”
“Who did it?”
“The trail points toward Celeste’s team. There are payments that could link her directly.”
Julian closed his eyes. For three years, he had helped Celeste’s career grow. He had secured film roles, advertising campaigns, and major contracts for her while Rowan disappeared from the industry.
“Get the complete files. Keep the originals safe and give copies to independent counsel.”
“There’s another issue,” Peter said. “Someone has told the press that Finn may be your son.”
Julian opened his eyes. “Who?”
“We’re trying to find out. The story is already spreading.”
Within an hour, social media was full of speculation. Photos from Rowan and Julian’s wedding resurfaced. Some people accused Rowan of hiding Finn to claim part of Julian’s fortune. Others repeated the old allegations, treating the edited video as proof.
Crossline received thousands of messages. A sponsor asked for an explanation, and Celeste’s representatives began calling their contacts.
That afternoon, Celeste arrived at the studio without an invitation. She wore dark glasses and a designer dress, smiling for reporters outside as she claimed she had come to support an old friend. Her expression changed when she saw Julian in a conference room.
“Darling, what’s going on?” she asked. “People are saying awful things about you.”
Julian said nothing. He placed a tablet on the table and opened the original video.
Celeste watched only a few seconds before her smile vanished.
“Where did you get that?”
“The security archive.”
“Julian, I can explain.”
“Then explain why your representative paid the company that altered the recording.”
Her face went pale. “I didn’t know anything about that.”
“Did you also not know Rowan had tried to defend herself?”
“She always wanted to destroy me.”
Julian struck the table with his palm. “Enough.”
Celeste stepped back. She had never seen him so angry.
“Don’t pretend this is all my fault,” she said. “You signed the orders. You blocked her from working. You chose to protect me.”
For a moment, Julian had no answer. Her accusation was true.
“Yes,” he said at last. “I did.”
He walked toward the door.
Celeste caught his arm. “If you admit the video was false, you’ll ruin my career.”
He pulled away. “Rowan lost hers because of a lie. You’ll have to answer for what you did.”
The Offer Rowan Could Refuse

The next day, Rowan received an urgent meeting request from Crossline. When she arrived, three lawyers and Peter were waiting in the conference room. Julian stood near the window. A thick document lay on the table.
“I want to offer you compensation,” he said.
Rowan stayed standing. “I didn’t ask for money.”
“I know. I’m also canceling every restriction I put in place, funding an independent investigation, and making sure the company is free to consider you for future projects.”
Peter opened the document. “The company has prepared an initial compensation proposal based on the professional losses you experienced. The amount will be reviewed by an outside auditor.”
Rowan read several pages. The numbers were larger than any amount she had imagined having in her account. Then she found a section about Finn.
“What about custody?”
Julian took a slow breath. “I want to know him. I’m not going to take him away from you.”
“Put that in writing.”
“We will.”
“And none of this can depend on whether I meet with you, forgive you, or allow you into our lives.”
Julian was quiet before he answered. “Agreed.”
Rowan closed the document. “I have one condition.”
“Tell me.”
“Your correction has to be public. It can’t be a short statement buried on a website no one reads. The same outlets that shared the lie need to report that the video was edited.”
“I’ll do that.”
“And don’t use your influence to force anyone to hire me. I want real auditions. If I earn a role, it should be because of my work.”
For the first time, Julian understood what Rowan was trying to recover. She didn’t want to return to being the chairman’s wife. She wanted the chance to stand on her own again.
“I agree.”
Rowan set the document down. “My lawyers will review it. After that, we can talk.”
She turned toward the door.
“Rowan…”
She paused.
“Does Finn know I’m his father?”
Rowan lowered her eyes. “He suspects. I’ve never lied to him, but I haven’t given him details a little boy shouldn’t have to carry.”
“Can I speak with him?”
“Ask him yourself, and respect whatever he says.”
A Promise Made at the Garden Bench
Finn was sitting on a bench in the courtyard, building a tower from wooden blocks. Julian approached slowly.
“May I sit here?”
Finn looked up. “Sure, but be careful. The blocks fall if you move the bench.”
Julian sat beside him. For a while, neither of them spoke.
“Your mom told me you might know who I am,” Julian began.
Finn placed another block on the tower. “It’s pretty obvious.”
“Because we look alike?”
“A little. Also, I found a picture from your wedding and worked out when I was born.”
Julian tried to smile. “You’re very smart.”
“That’s what my mom says.”
Finn finished the tower, then turned toward him.
“Why didn’t you come before?”
The question was plain, and Julian couldn’t hide behind company schedules or business decisions.
“I made some very serious mistakes. I didn’t know you existed, but that doesn’t excuse what I did to your mother.”
Finn studied him. “Are you rich?”
“Yes.”
“Richer than the other parents on the show?”
“Probably.”
“Then why did my mom have to sell her things to buy me medicine?”
Julian closed his eyes. The question hurt more than anything the press had written.
“Because I wasn’t there.”
“Do you want to be here now?”
