Moral Stories Silent Heroes

Three Years After My Divorce, I Asked My Assistant to Check on My Ex-Wife. An Hour Later, He Placed a Photo of Her With Two-and-a-Half-Year-Old Twins on My Desk. Both Children Looked Just Like Me. When I Called Her, a Stranger Answered, “I’m Her Husband Now.” But When I Finally Met Her, She Showed Me Something My Own Mother Had Kept Hidden for Three Years

Part 2 of 3

Inside were copies of letters, delivery confirmations, emails, and correspondence from my family’s former attorney.

One letter was dated shortly before our divorce.

Andrew, I found out yesterday that I’m pregnant. The doctor says there are two babies. I know our marriage is ending, but I believe you deserve to know.

Another had been written shortly after the twins were born.

Their names are Oliver and Hazel. They’re healthy, beautiful, and already changing my life. I’m not asking you to come back to me. I’m asking whether you want to know your children.

The final document was a formal response on my family’s law firm’s letterhead.

It stated that I had been informed and did not wish to establish contact.

My signature wasn’t on it.

“Who sent this?” I asked.

“Your mother’s attorney. I called afterward, but his office said the decision was final.”

My hands went cold.

My mother, Patricia Whitaker, had controlled much of my personal correspondence during the transition after my father’s passing.

Her longtime administrative assistant, Elaine Porter, handled private letters delivered to the company.

I called Patrick.

“Find Elaine Porter. And get me the contact information for an attorney who has never represented my family.”

Meredith watched me carefully.

“Andrew, I don’t want another fight. The children are happy.”

“I understand. I’m not here to take anything away from them.”

For once, I meant every word.

Two Children Who Didn’t Know My Name

Before I left, Meredith agreed to let me meet the twins briefly as a family acquaintance.

Oliver was sitting on the living room rug, trying to repair a wooden train.

Hazel held a stuffed rabbit against her chest.

“Who’s that, Mommy?” Hazel asked.

“This is Andrew. He’s someone I knew a long time ago.”

Oliver looked at me with serious brown eyes.

“Can you fix my train?”

I knelt beside him.

“I can try.”

Daniel handed me a small screwdriver.

It took several minutes, but I managed to reattach the loose wheel.

Oliver pushed the train across the floor and laughed.

“Daddy, look! Andrew fixed it!”

He ran toward Daniel.

The word Daddy stayed with me.

Daniel had been there for their first steps, their fevers, and their birthdays.

I had been sitting in conference rooms, completely unaware they existed.

When I stood to leave, Hazel waved.

“Bye, Andrew. Can you fix something else next time?”

I looked at Meredith, who gave a small, cautious nod.

“I’d like that very much,” I told her.

My Mother’s Secret

Two days later, I confronted my mother at her home near Lake Minnetonka.

Patricia was sixty-eight, elegant, composed, and accustomed to being obeyed.

I placed the copied letters on her dining table.

“Did you know Meredith was pregnant?”

Her expression changed immediately.

“Andrew, there were complicated circumstances at the time.”

“Did you know?”

She looked away.

“Yes.”

I felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath me.

“You knew I had children, and you never told me?”

“I believed I was protecting you. The company was already facing serious problems, and Meredith had left you.”

“She was carrying my children.”

My mother lowered her voice.

“I instructed Elaine to redirect Meredith’s correspondence to our attorney. I was told everything had been handled.”

“Handled? You let her believe I had abandoned my own children.”

She began crying.

“I made a terrible decision.”

I stood.

“You didn’t make one decision, Mom. You allowed that decision to continue for three years.”

For the first time, I left without waiting for her explanation.

The Other Secret My Father Left Behind

Elaine Porter agreed to meet me the following morning.

She arrived carrying a small storage box.

Inside were Meredith’s original letters and records showing that several calls had been routed away from my office.

“I should have told you,” Elaine whispered. “Your mother said you had authorized everything. I was afraid of losing my job.”

She handed me another envelope.

It contained a letter from my father’s former accountant, Franklin Webb.

Franklin had abruptly resigned three years earlier and moved to a small town outside Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

My mother had told several people that he had passed away.

In reality, he had simply disappeared from our professional circle.

Franklin’s letter described irregular financial transfers from a family charitable foundation.

The records pointed toward my uncle, Richard Whitaker, who had overseen the foundation’s investments.

My father had discovered questionable transactions shortly before his final illness.

He had instructed Franklin to preserve the original accounting files, encrypted digital records, and copies of bank statements.

My mother had hidden the matter because she feared that exposing Richard would destroy the company.

And she had become convinced that keeping Meredith and her unborn children away from our family would protect them from the scandal.

Her fear had turned into secrecy.
