My father had begun investigating Lucinda years before my marriage.

He had noticed connections between her charitable organizations and companies that existed only on paper.

I sat inside the private viewing room and stared at the words until they blurred.

The video from my executive meeting showed Grant entering my home under a misleading explanation.

The digital records revealed repeated attempts to connect questionable transfers to my professional identity.

Grant called from several unfamiliar numbers.

I ignored every call.

Lucinda left a voicemail.

“Maren, respectable families resolve these matters privately. You are creating damage that cannot be undone.”

I saved the recording.

A year earlier, I might have called her back and apologized for upsetting her.

I might have agreed to meet privately.

We declined the meeting.
