Part 2 of 3

But after her father, Harrison Rourke, passed away, Maris rarely returned to Cincinnati.

According to foundation records, however, she had continued approving financial decisions for years.

Her signature appeared beside Camden’s and Lenore’s.

There was only one problem.

I remembered at least one meeting date clearly.

Maris had been working at her hospital in Boston that day.

Sloane examined six separate documents.

Then she called us.

“These signatures appear identical.”

Jocelyn frowned.

“Identical how?”

“Not similar. Identical. They appear to have been inserted from the same digital image.”

Someone had apparently been approving resolutions in Maris’s name.

Suddenly this wasn’t simply about questionable spending.

Someone had wanted the records to appear unanimous.

The Sister Who Knew Nothing

Maris called me the following afternoon.

Camden had contacted her after damaging my laptop, and she had also learned that someone was reviewing old foundation records.

She sounded confused.

“Tessa, is something wrong with Dad’s foundation?”

Her question told me almost everything.

She wasn’t asking what we knew.

She was asking what had happened.

I asked her when she had last approved a foundation resolution.

“Not since Dad passed away.”

I looked at Jocelyn.

There were nearly three years of documents bearing Maris’s signature after Harrison’s passing.

When I told her, she became silent.

Finally she whispered:

“I didn’t sign them.”

Jocelyn immediately advised her to obtain independent legal counsel.

Before ending the call, however, Maris told us something I couldn’t forget.

Shortly before Harrison underwent surgery, he had started making private copies of foundation documents.

Maris once caught him putting papers into a locked drawer.

When she asked why, her father gave her an unusual answer.

“Families remember things the way they need to remember them. Paper remembers what actually happened.”

After Harrison passed away, Maris checked the drawer.

It was empty.

The $2.4 Million Mystery

Sloane soon uncovered something even stranger.

Eighteen months earlier, $2.4 million had been transferred into a restricted charitable reserve associated with Maris’s name.

At first, it looked terrible.

Had Maris secretly received millions from the foundation?

Then Sloane found the original documents.

The reserve hadn’t been created eighteen months earlier.

Harrison had created it six years earlier.

Maris wasn’t the beneficiary.

She was the successor trustee.

And attached to the original paperwork was a handwritten note from Harrison.

It explained that the reserve existed to protect money promised to children’s medical programs from being redirected toward family business needs.

One sentence stood out:

“Whatever our family name is worth, it is worth less than a promise we fail to keep.”

Then came another:

“If there is ever a question, follow the money before you follow the family story.”

Harrison had known something was wrong years earlier.

But another question remained.

Why had Lenore transferred $2.4 million into the very account her husband had designed to keep money away from family businesses?

Lenore Finally Told the Truth

Two days later, Lenore requested a meeting through our attorneys.

I expected arrogance.

Instead, the woman who entered the conference room looked exhausted.

She wore simple gray trousers and a cream blouse.

No expensive jewelry.

No carefully rehearsed smile.

She sat across from me.

Then she said something I never expected.

“I owe you an apology.”

She started with the credit card.

She admitted she had known it was my personal account and had continued using it because Camden never stopped her.

Then I asked about the foundation.

Her face changed.

She admitted that years earlier, Rourke family businesses had faced a serious cash-flow problem.

Lenore wanted Harrison to permit temporary transfers from charitable funds into family-controlled companies.

Harrison refused.

After he passed away, some of those transfers happened anyway.

“I kept telling myself the money would be returned,” Lenore said.

“Was it?” I asked.

She looked down.

“Some of it.”

“How much was moved?”

Her answer came quietly.

“Millions.”

Then I asked about the $2.4 million.

Lenore surprised everyone.

“I was putting it back.”

She had eventually realized Harrison had been right.

The transfer into his protected reserve was her attempt to restore some of the money.

It did not erase what she had done.

But it changed the story.

Then came an even bigger surprise.

According to Lenore, Camden had not understood where all the original money came from.

He knew the foundation invested alongside family entities.
