I Walked Back Into Their Celebration

On the evening of the reception, I arrived in a simple navy dress.

The ballroom was filled with flowers, polished glassware and guests dressed for an engagement party.

At the front of the room sat Tessa.

Derek stood beside her.

Colleen was glowing.

When she saw me, her expression immediately hardened.

“What are you doing here?”

Derek walked toward me.

“Claire, don’t embarrass yourself.”

I looked past him.

A small velvet ring box was sitting on the table near the stage.

So that was the plan.

He was going to propose publicly.

I walked toward the stage.

Derek stepped in front of Tessa.

“Stay away from Sienna.”

I reached into my purse and removed an envelope.

Then I looked directly at Tessa.

“Before he puts that ring on your finger, I think the performance should end.”

Tessa stood.

The sweet expression she had worn all evening disappeared.

I handed her the envelope.

“Here’s the rest of your payment, Tessa. You did exactly what I hired you to do.”

The room went silent.

Derek stared at her.

“Tessa?”

She nodded.

“That’s my real name.”

Colleen rushed forward.

“Stop this nonsense. Tell everyone who your father is.”

Tessa calmly picked up her handbag.

“My father owns a small printing shop outside Raleigh. My mother teaches middle school.”

Derek looked at her dress, jewelry and purse.

“Then what is all this?”

“Borrowed, rented or inexpensive.”

She lifted the car key.

“The luxury car was rented by Claire.”

Then she pointed toward me.

“And most of our expensive dinners were paid for through an account she provided.”

Derek’s face drained of color.

Then Came the Baby

Colleen suddenly grabbed Tessa’s arm.

“But the baby is real.”

Tessa gently pulled away.

“There is no baby.”

Derek stared at her.

“What?”

“I’m not pregnant.”

He looked completely lost.

“You lied to me.”

Tessa shook her head.

“Claire hired me to introduce myself. She never made you give me your number. She never made you take me to dinner. She never made you insult your wife behind her back. And she certainly didn’t make you file for divorce.”

Then she said the sentence I would remember for years.

“I showed you an open door, Derek. You were the one who ran through it.”

Tessa collected her things and left.

Derek turned toward me.

“Why would you do this?”

I removed a folder from my bag.

“Because two months ago, I was preparing to give you news that could have changed both our lives.”

He opened the folder.

Bank statements.

Property records.

Business ownership documents.

Investment accounts.

His eyes stopped at the total.

“Five million dollars?”

“A little more, actually.”

He looked at me.

“Whose money is this?”

“Mine.”

The Inheritance Changed Everything

I explained about Aunt Margaret.

I told him about the dinner I had prepared.

About the future I had imagined for us.

Then I told him about Brittany’s message.

Derek lowered his eyes.

“Claire…”

“I read everything.”

His silence answered me.

Colleen looked confused.

“What does Brittany have to do with this?”

So I told her.

Then I told her something else.

“And for the record, doctors never told us that I couldn’t have children. Derek’s test results showed that his chances were extremely low.”

Colleen slowly turned toward her son.

For six years, she had blamed me.

Derek had allowed it.

He had watched me absorb every comment because admitting the truth would have wounded his pride.

But even then, Derek wasn’t focused on what he had done.

He kept staring at the inheritance documents.

Finally he whispered, “So all of this could have been ours.”

That sentence gave me the final answer I needed.

Not “I’m sorry.”

Not “I hurt you.”

Not “I should have protected you.”

Ours.

He was mourning the money.

“No, Derek,” I said. “It could have been a life I chose to share with you. The inheritance was always mine.”

Suddenly I Was Family Again

A frightened voice came from behind us.

Colleen was staring at her phone.

She had borrowed nearly thirty thousand dollars at terrible terms in addition to using her savings for the reception.

The lake cottage was at risk.

And the wealthy Caldwell family she had expected to rescue everything didn’t exist.

Then her entire voice changed.
