“Sir… Your Ex-Wife Has Twins, and They Look Exactly Like You.” Three Years After Our Divorce, I Rushed to Her House—Only to Hear Two Little Children Calling Another Man “Daddy.” I Thought She Had Hidden Them From Me All Along. But When I Asked Why, She Quietly Handed Me an Old Folder and Said, “Before You Blame Me, You Need to See This.” What I Found Inside Made Me Question Everything I Thought I Knew About Our Divorce…

Part 2 of 3

I looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

She studied my face.

“I did, Spencer. More than once.”

I shook my head.

“I never received anything.”

Natalie walked to a small desk and returned with a folder.

Inside were copies of letters, medical documents, and envelopes.

The first letter was dated shortly after the twins were born.

She had written to tell me that our children were healthy and that I could contact her if I wanted to be involved in their lives.

Another letter had been sent several months later.

A third was written on their first birthday.

There were more.

Every letter had been addressed to my corporate office.

“I waited for you to answer,” Natalie explained. “Eventually, I realized I couldn’t keep waiting.”

I read the letters with shaking hands.

“Natalie, I swear I never saw these.”

“I believe you now.”

I looked up.

“Why now?”

She pointed to an envelope that had been returned to her.

Across the front were the words Recipient Unavailable.

I had never been unavailable.

My office was open every weekday.

Someone had deliberately prevented those letters from reaching me.

Then I remembered who had supervised my personal correspondence during the divorce.

My mother’s longtime secretary, Evelyn Price.

The Person Who Kept Us Apart

My mother, Patricia Aldridge, had never approved of Natalie.

She believed Natalie was too independent and too uninterested in the social expectations surrounding our family.

During our marriage, my mother often reminded me that business responsibilities should come before personal feelings.

I had listened far too often.

When I called her that evening, she answered cheerfully.

“Spencer, darling, what a surprise.”

“Mother, did you know Natalie had children?”

The silence was immediate.

“Where did you hear that?”

My heart sank.

“You knew.”

“Spencer, there are things about that period you don’t understand.”

“Did you stop her letters from reaching me?”

“I was trying to protect you.”

I closed my eyes.

“You had no right to make that decision.”

“Our family was facing serious problems. I couldn’t allow another complication.”

“Those children are not a complication. They’re my children.”

My mother began crying, but I could not comfort her.

For the first time in my life, I understood how easily I had allowed her to control decisions that should have belonged to me.

The following morning, Evelyn Price agreed to meet us.

She arrived carrying an old leather briefcase.

Inside were the original letters Natalie had mailed, along with copies of the twins’ medical records.

Evelyn’s hands trembled as she placed them on the table.

“Your mother told me you didn’t want any personal correspondence from Natalie,” she admitted. “I knew I should have asked you directly.”

“Why didn’t you?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I was afraid of losing my job. I kept telling myself it wasn’t my place to interfere.”

Natalie looked at her quietly.

“Your silence cost my children years with someone who should have known they existed.”

Evelyn lowered her head.

“I know. And I’m deeply sorry.”

But the briefcase contained something else.

A sealed letter written by my late father’s accountant.

And it revealed a secret nobody had expected.

The Missing Ledger

My father had built Aldridge Holdings into one of Ohio’s most successful private investment companies.

After his passing, I inherited the business and trusted the executives who had worked alongside him for decades.

One of those men was Harold Mercer, his longtime accountant.

According to my mother, Harold had passed away shortly after my father.

Yet the letter in Evelyn’s briefcase suggested something very different.

It described a confidential financial ledger containing evidence that several senior executives had improperly redirected money from the company’s charitable foundations.

One name stood out.

My uncle, Raymond Aldridge.

Harold had discovered the questionable transactions and informed my mother.

Shortly afterward, the ledger disappeared.

The letter also mentioned Natalie.

Someone connected to the financial misconduct had learned about her pregnancy and appeared to be monitoring her movements.

Harold had arranged a safe place for her to stay outside Columbus.

Natalie listened in disbelief.

“A man approached me outside the clinic after the twins were born,” she whispered. “He told me I should leave the city because some people connected to your family might use the children to pressure you.”

I stared at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I was frightened, Spencer. Your mother had already made it clear that I wasn’t welcome, and I didn’t know whom I could trust.”

Brent began investigating Harold’s disappearance.

Within two days, he found him living quietly in a small Indiana town under a different surname.

Harold was alive.

And he agreed to meet me.

The Truth My Father Left Behind

Harold arrived at Natalie’s home carrying a worn brown envelope.

He looked older than I remembered, but his voice remained steady.

“Your father knew there were serious problems inside the company,” he explained. “He wanted to correct them before they damaged the people who depended on the business.”

“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?”

Harold sighed.

“Because you were becoming exactly like him, Spencer. You believed authority meant never admitting uncertainty.”

His words stung.

“I would have handled it.”

“Perhaps. But at that time, you trusted power more than people.”

I wanted to argue, but I remembered how I had treated Natalie.

Harold explained that my mother had hidden the financial records because she feared public disclosure would destroy the company.

She had also kept Natalie’s letters from me, believing the children could become entangled in the dispute.

Her fear did not excuse her choices.

It had only created more pain.

Harold then revealed that the missing ledger was hidden inside my father’s old lakeside property near Buckeye Lake.

Beside it was a letter addressed to me.
