Right After Our 12-Year Marriage Ended, My Ex Smirked, “There’s Nothing Left to Discuss,” Then Rushed Off to Celebrate With His Pregnant Girlfriend. I Quietly Took Our Two Children and Left Chicago—Hours Later, His Hidden $3.8 Million Was Exposed, and He Learned the Truth About the Baby He Couldn’t Wait to Welcome… But It Was the Name on the Medical File That Left Him Speechless

Part 2 of 3

The letterhead belonged to the private medical center where Vanessa was that afternoon.

She was expecting a baby.

Grant had been paying some of the expenses.

But one document contained information he apparently had never seen.

I read the name twice.

Then a third time.

Logan Wexler.

Grant’s younger brother.

I looked up.

“Logan?”

Harrison nodded.

“That is what the documentation indicates.”

My stomach tightened.

Grant had spent years deceiving me while building what he believed was his perfect future.

And someone inside that future had apparently been keeping a secret from him.

The Call From Vanessa

My phone rang again.

Unknown number.

Harrison glanced at me.

“Answer it.”

I put the call on speaker.

“Hello?”

For several seconds, I heard nothing except hurried voices in the background.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“Claire?”

I recognized her immediately.

“Why are you calling me?”

“What did you send Grant?”

Her voice was shaking.

“I didn’t send him anything.”

“He has documents. He’s questioning everyone.”

I looked at Harrison.

He remained silent.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Claire, please. Today was supposed to be important. I can’t handle all of this right now.”

I felt strangely calm.

“Who is the baby’s father, Vanessa?”

Silence.

Then I heard a man in the background.

“Hang up.”

It wasn’t Grant.

It was Logan.

Vanessa inhaled sharply.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain it.”

She hesitated.

Then the words started coming.

Grant had promised to leave me years earlier. He had kept delaying because of the children, appearances, and finances.

Logan had been there when Grant wasn’t.

He had listened.

He had understood her.

I almost laughed at the strange symmetry of it all.

“So while Grant was lying to me, you were lying to Grant?”

“It wasn’t that simple.”

“It usually isn’t.”

Suddenly, another voice appeared in the background.

Grant.

“Is that Claire?”

The call ended.

Harrison checked his watch.

“His attorney received the amended filing eleven minutes after the divorce order became final.”

I stared at him.

Eleven minutes.

Grant had spent those eleven minutes believing he had won.

The House My Mother Never Sold

We boarded the train that afternoon.

Maisie fell asleep against my shoulder.

Ethan watched Chicago disappear through the window.

For the first time in years, I wasn’t wondering where Grant was.

I wasn’t waiting for him to call.

I wasn’t trying to save a marriage that only one of us was still living inside.

Hours later, we arrived in Toronto.

A woman named Rebecca Sloan, an associate of Harrison’s, met us at the station.

The house waiting for us stood on a quiet, tree-lined street.

It had belonged to my mother.

I had visited it once as a teenager and almost forgotten about it.

But she hadn’t.

She had placed it inside a trust years ago.

Grant had no claim to it.

When I stepped inside, I found clean beds prepared for the children, soup warming in the kitchen, books stacked beside the sofa, and fresh tulips near the window.

Maisie ran upstairs.

Ethan followed.

I remained in the entryway.

My mother had left me something more valuable than a house.

She had left me a door that nobody else could close.

The Agreement Grant Never Read

The following morning, Rebecca arrived carrying coffee and legal documents.

Grant had requested an emergency hearing concerning the children.

For the first time since leaving Chicago, I felt afraid.

Rebecca noticed.

“Read this.”

She opened our parenting agreement.

I had primary legal and physical responsibility for Ethan and Maisie.

Then she pointed to another paragraph.

The agreement permitted international relocation provided formal notice was submitted within the required period.

I stared at her.

“Grant agreed to this?”

“He initialed every page.”

I remembered the negotiations.

Grant had barely looked at the parenting section.

He had joked that I could handle the details because he was too busy.

Now those details mattered.

“We’ll file the notice today,” Rebecca said.
