Prince Harry leaves controversial item at late Queen’s tomb following return to UK

Part 1 of 2

Prince Harry has made his much-anticipated return to the United Kingdom today (8 September), marking a poignant occasion that coincides with the third anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s death.

The Duke of Sussex, who stepped back as a senior working royal in 2020 and relocated to California with his wife Meghan Markle, travelled to London to attend the WellChild Awards in his role as patron of the charity — a position he has held for more than 15 years.

At this evening’s ceremony, Harry is expected to deliver a speech, meet with seriously ill children and their families, and present an award to an “inspirational child” between the ages of four and six.

In a statement ahead of the event, the Duke reflected on the significance of the awards:
“For 20 years these awards have highlighted the courage of young people living with complex health needs and shone a light on the devoted caregivers — family and professionals — who support them every step of the way. Their stories remind us of the power of compassion, connection and community.”

A Private Tribute to Queen Elizabeth II

Earlier in the day, Harry visited the King George VI Memorial Chapel at Windsor Castle’s St George’s Chapel, where his late grandmother is interred. He laid a wreath and flowers at her tomb in a private act of remembrance.
