Paige hurried into the living room.

“Maren?”

Her voice echoed.

The sofas were gone.

The lamps were gone.

The television was gone.

The shelves were gone.

Even the artwork had been removed.

Derek rushed toward the kitchen.

“There isn’t even a refrigerator.”

Veronica turned toward me.

“What did you do?”

“I moved my belongings.”

“You emptied the entire house?”

“Everything I purchased, inherited, or legally owned has been removed.”

Her face tightened.

“You did this to embarrass us.”

“No. I did it because I no longer live here.”

Paige opened a cabinet.

Empty.

She opened another.

Also empty.

Derek ran upstairs.

A moment later, he called down.

“All the bedrooms are empty too!”

I almost smiled.

Graham’s personal clothes, golf clubs, framed certificates, old college boxes, and several pieces of luggage had been carefully packed in the garage.

Everything else belonged to me.

And I had already relocated it.

The House Had Nothing to Offer Them

After several minutes, Paige began fanning herself.

“Why is it so hot in here?”

Derek walked toward the thermostat.

He pressed several buttons.

Nothing happened.

He tried again.

“The air conditioning isn’t working.”

Paige turned on the kitchen faucet.

Nothing came out.

She stared at me.

“There’s no water?”

“No.”

Veronica looked increasingly alarmed.

“You shut off the utilities?”

“I canceled the services because the house is scheduled for renovation.”

Derek turned sharply.

“What about the internet?”

I looked at him.

“Also canceled.”

Paige blinked.

“There’s no Wi-Fi?”

“No Wi-Fi.”

That appeared to disturb her more than anything else.

The beautiful house they had arrived to occupy had no furniture, no appliances, no water, no air conditioning, and no internet.

Most importantly, they had no legal right to stay.

For the first time all afternoon, Veronica had nothing to say.

Then the Moving Company Wanted Its Money

The movers had been waiting outside for hours.

Their supervisor, a calm older man named Curtis Dale, approached Veronica with a clipboard.

“Ma’am, I need to know whether we’re unloading.”

Veronica shook her head.

“Not today. We’ll reschedule.”

Curtis looked down at the paperwork.

“Then there is a cancellation fee, crew time, truck charges, and return mileage.”

Veronica frowned.

“How much?”

“Four thousand three hundred dollars.”

Her mouth opened slightly.

“For nothing?”

Curtis remained calm.

“For the trucks, the crew, the reserved time, and the hours we spent waiting because we were instructed to be here.”

Derek stepped toward him.

“That’s ridiculous.”

Curtis did not move.

“It’s the contract.”

Eventually, Veronica paid.

I watched her remove a card from her purse with hands that were no longer completely steady.

For someone who enjoyed presenting herself as extremely wealthy, she seemed deeply uncomfortable with unexpected expenses.

I already knew why.

During the divorce investigation, Elise had discovered that Graham had quietly been transferring money to members of his family.

Some payments had gone to Derek’s failing business.

Others had covered Paige’s credit cards.

A much larger amount had helped Veronica place a deposit on a vacation property.

Those details had not yet become public.

But they were about to matter.

Graham Arrived Furious

It was nearly eight in the evening when Graham finally appeared.

His black sedan stopped near the curb.

He stepped out wearing the same suit from court, although his tie was loose and his face looked exhausted.

Veronica hurried toward him.

She spoke so quickly that he barely responded.

Then Graham looked at the empty moving trucks preparing to leave.

He looked at Derek’s car, which had been temporarily blocked because he had parked part of it on my lawn.

He looked at Paige holding a nearly dead phone.

Finally, he looked at me.

“Maren, open the gate.”

“No.”

He stared at me for several seconds.

“You are making this unnecessarily difficult.”

I almost laughed.

“Your family arrived with two moving trucks and tried to move into property they do not own.”

“My mother needs somewhere to stay.”

“Then help her find somewhere.”

“There are six bedrooms in that house.”

“And none of them belong to her.”

His face changed.

The old Graham appeared for a moment—the man who always believed a quiet voice from me meant weakness.

“You think you can humiliate my family and walk away?”

I raised my phone and began recording.

“Graham, please say clearly what you are asking me to do.”

He looked at the camera.

Instantly, his behavior changed.

Graham cared deeply about appearances.

He stepped back.

“Turn that off.”

“I prefer to document this conversation.”

Before he could respond, Elise’s car pulled up.

She stepped out carrying a leather folder.

Two security professionals followed her.

“Good evening,” she said.

Graham sighed.

“Elise, this is a family disagreement.”

She stopped beside me.

“No. It is a property dispute and a financial issue.”

Then she opened the folder.

The Financial Records Changed Everything

Over the previous year, Graham had transferred significant amounts of money from marital accounts to relatives.

Some transfers were disguised as consulting fees.

Others were personal payments.

Elise also had documents showing purchases and investments Graham had never properly disclosed.

She looked directly at him.

“We can discuss these matters privately, or we can return to court and allow the records to speak for themselves.”
