Before marrying Nate, I had worked in commercial property analysis. My parents had also left me a modest inheritance, which I invested rather than spending.

Over the years, those investments grew.

Nate knew I had once worked in finance.

He did not know how much I still owned.

Around the same time, his company developed serious cash-flow problems.

Through a private investment group managed by an old professional contact of mine, Nate entered a sale-and-leaseback arrangement involving our house outside Madison, Wisconsin.

He received the cash he desperately needed while retaining a limited option to regain ownership if he repaid the agreed amount before the deadline.

He called it temporary.

Then he spent recklessly.

Luxury dinners.

Trips.

A vehicle.

And eventually, I discovered that he had helped Lacey secure a condo.

The repayment deadline came.

Nate couldn’t meet it.

The property became available.

So I purchased it legally through my separate assets.

Nate never bothered to investigate who the buyer was.

He was too busy planning his new life.

His temporary right to remain in the house expired at 7:00 a.m. on January 1.

Seven O’Clock

Clara and I spent the night in a suite overlooking downtown Madison.

At midnight, she woke briefly because of fireworks.

She climbed into my bed.

“Happy New Year, Mommy.”

I kissed her forehead.

“Happy New Year, sweetheart.”

At 6:58 a.m., my attorney called.

“Everything is ready.”

At exactly seven, a property representative and legal team arrived at the Holloway house.

Nate answered the door expecting Lacey.

Instead, he received formal notice that his occupancy rights had expired.

“There’s been a mistake,” he said.

There hadn’t.

Marjorie came downstairs.

“My son owns this house!”

The representative calmly showed them the records.

Nate flipped through the documents until he reached the current ownership information.

Then he stopped.

“Corinne?”

The representative nodded.

“Mrs. Corinne Holloway is the registered owner.”

Marjorie began shouting.

But Nate went completely silent.

Then my attorney played the short message I had recorded.

“Nate, you told me last night that Lacey would take my place. You were right about one thing: somebody’s life changes today. Clara and I already left. The house belongs to me now, and your permission to occupy it has expired. Please cooperate with the representatives and take your personal belongings.”

The Woman He Chose

Nate called Lacey repeatedly.

Eventually she arrived.

He rushed toward her.

“Thank God. We need to stay at your condo until I straighten this out.”

Lacey didn’t move.

“We?”

Nate stared at her.

“Me and Mom. Just temporarily.”

She folded her arms.

“No.”

Marjorie stepped forward.

“Your family has money. Surely your father can help Nate until—”

Lacey actually laughed.

“My father manages a small auto repair shop in Green Bay.”

Marjorie’s face changed.

“You told us your family owned businesses.”

“They do. One repair shop.”

Nate looked stunned.

But the worst was still coming.

He lowered his voice.

“Fine. None of that matters. We have our son.”

Lacey looked away.

Then she said quietly:

“Nate, we need to talk about that too.”

His expression froze.

“What does that mean?”

“I was already pregnant when we became serious.”

Silence.

“What?”

“The baby isn’t yours.”

Nate simply stared at her.

Lacey explained that she had allowed him to assume what he wanted because his attention, gifts, and promises made her life easier.

Then she left.

Just like that.

Nate had traded a nine-year marriage and daily life with his seven-year-old daughter for a future that had never actually existed.

Daddy Wants to Come Home

Nine days later, Nate called me.

I ignored the first three calls.

On the fourth, I answered because Clara had asked whether her father was okay.

“Corinne.”

His voice sounded different.

“Can we talk?”

“About Clara?”

He hesitated.

“About us.”

“There is no us.”

“I made a mistake.”

I looked through the window at Clara drawing at the kitchen counter.
