“Do you think Brock is involved in something illegal?”

Amos chose his words carefully.

“I think your former husband may be surrounded by people who would not appreciate anyone examining their records.”

Two days later, I returned to the Edina house while Brock was away. A moving company had left several boxes of my belongings in the garage.

Inside a box labeled SCHOOL PAPERS, I found a blue notebook that belonged to Reid.

It was not a diary.

The pages contained dates, initials, account numbers, business names, and arrows connecting one company to another.

Near the back, Reid had written:

“If Mom finds this, things have already gone too far.”

I sat on the garage floor with the notebook in my hands.

My son had been carrying this alone while I believed he had stopped loving me.

That evening, an email appeared in my inbox from an unknown sender.

“For your son’s sake, stop asking questions.”

I called Amos immediately.

“Someone knows I’m investigating.”

“Then we need to assume they’re watching both you and Reid.”

Before we ended the call, he gave me the name of a trusted former federal investigator, Malcolm Dorsey, who had once worked with my late father.

The Call From Seattle

Malcolm agreed to meet me at a quiet diner outside Roseville.

He examined Reid’s notebook and the screenshots Amos had collected.

His expression became increasingly serious.

“Your son did not invent this,” he said. “These appear to be transfers routed through companies that exist mostly on paper.”

“Can we report it?”

“Eventually. But first we need to preserve the evidence and make sure your son is safe.”

That night, Reid called from Seattle.

His voice was low.

“Mom, Dad keeps asking about you.”

“What does he want to know?”

“Whether you’re meeting anyone, whether you’ve used the card, and whether you went back to the house.”

I walked to the window and pulled the curtain closed.

“Tell him you don’t know anything.”

There was a long pause.

“I think he knows I took the files.”

My chest tightened.

“Reid, delete everything and walk away. I don’t care about the money. I only care about you.”

“I can’t just delete it. Dad planned to put some of the accounts in your name. If everything came out, he was going to say you handled the transfers.”

I had to sit down.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because he checks my phone. I had to make him believe I was on his side.”

The courtroom came rushing back to me.

My mom can’t give me anything.

It had not been cruelty.

It had been a performance.

“The things you said in court…”

Reid began to cry quietly.

“I’m sorry, Mom. Dad needed to trust me enough to take me with him.”

I covered my mouth to stop my own tears.

“You should never have had to do this.”

“I made three copies. Malcolm will know where to look if I can’t contact you.”

The call ended.

For the next thirty-six hours, Reid sent nothing.

The Warning

I did not sleep.

Every time a car slowed outside my apartment, I looked through the blinds.

The following afternoon, I noticed a man in a dark cap standing across the street. When I walked toward a busy coffee shop, he followed at a distance.

I entered through the front door and left through a side exit.

By the time I reached the next block, he was gone.

Later, my phone rang.

A calm male voice spoke.

“Ms. Finch, there are matters that should remain private.”

“Who is this?”

“Someone trying to prevent your family from making a permanent mistake.”

“Where is my son?”

“He is safe at the moment. Return what he removed, and everyone can move forward.”

The call ended before I could respond.

Malcolm told me not to negotiate alone.

“The files may be the reason they are still treating Reid carefully,” he explained. “We need copies in places they cannot control.”

That evening, we prepared everything.

I copied the records onto several encrypted drives. Malcolm arranged for packages to be delivered to a financial journalist, a federal office, and an attorney specializing in corporate fraud.

I also scheduled an email containing key documents to be sent automatically if I did not cancel it within forty-eight hours.

At 12:17 a.m., Reid called.

“Mom, Dad knows.”

I stood so quickly that my chair fell backward.

“Where are you?”

“In a car. We came back to Minnesota tonight. He took my laptop, but he doesn’t know about all the copies.”

“Are you okay?”

“For now.”

Those two words frightened me more than anything else.

“Listen to me. Tell him you didn’t send the files. Stay calm and give us time.”

“Mom, if I don’t call again, I need you to know that I love you.”

“You will call again. Do you hear me? This is not goodbye.”

The line went silent.

The Warehouse Meeting

An hour later, I received a location on the industrial edge of north Minneapolis.

The message said:

“Come alone if you want to see your son.”

I forwarded the location to Malcolm.

His reply came immediately.

“Go. We will remain nearby. Keep them talking.”

I put one encrypted drive inside the lining of my coat and left the apartment.

The warehouse stood behind a row of empty loading docks. One overhead light flickered near the entrance.

Inside, Brock sat at a metal table.

His shirt was wrinkled, his face was pale, and for the first time since I had known him, he did not look in control.

“You came,” he said.

“Where is Reid?”

“Always dramatic, Laurel.”

“Bring me my son.”

Brock nodded toward a side office.

Two men opened the door, and Reid stepped out. His hair was untidy, and exhaustion showed on his face, but he appeared physically unharmed.

When our eyes met, he gave the smallest shake of his head.

Do not react.

I forced myself to remain still.

“Are you all right?”

“I’m okay, Mom.”

Brock rose from the table.

“Your son entered files he had no right to access.”
