Behind Closed Doors Moral Stories

My Son’s Bride Crossed Did Something that Left 200 Wedding Guests Silent After I Refused to Pay Nearly $2,000 for One More Bottle of Champagne—Then She Told Me to Leave the Wedding I’d Already Spent Over $45,000 Helping Them Afford, While My Son Just Stood There… So I Quietly Picked Up My Purse and Made One Phone Call

Part 3 of 3

Nobody spoke.

I pointed to another invoice.

“The shuttle vans were added because your parents didn’t want relatives using rideshares.”

Richard straightened.

“We were thinking about safety.”

“That’s fine. But I paid for them.”

Cynthia crossed her arms.

“We assumed Daniel had discussed the budget with you.”

I looked at my son.

Daniel was staring at the paperwork.

“I did,” he said quietly.

“No, you asked me whether I could cover one more thing. Then one more. Then one more.”

He didn’t answer.

I reached into the folder and removed a copy of the land sale agreement.

I placed it in front of him.

“And this is where the last part came from.”

Daniel read the first page.

Then he looked up.

“What did you sell?”

“Four acres off the western edge of your father’s land.”

His face went blank.

“Dad’s land?”

“Yes.”

“You sold part of Grandpa’s property for the wedding?”

“Yes.”

He pushed his chair back.

“Why would you do that?”

I almost answered automatically.

Because you needed it.

Instead, I folded my hands.

“Because every time you called, you sounded like there was some emergency I could fix with money.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Mom, I never asked you to sell land.”

“No. You just kept asking for money.”

That stopped him.

I went to the kitchen counter and brought back another folder.

Thomas’s handwriting was still on the front.

TOM AND MARGARET’S TRIP.

I set it beside the wedding invoices.

Daniel recognized it.

“Wasn’t that the trip you and Dad planned?”

“Yes.”

“I thought you were finally taking it this fall.”

“I canceled it.”

He looked at me.

“For this?”

I nodded.

The room stayed quiet.

Tiffany picked at one of her fingernails.

“Margaret, nobody knew you were doing all that.”

I looked at her.

“That’s true.”

For once, I wasn’t going to make my own choices somebody else’s fault.

“I should have said no months ago.”

The Question Daniel Couldn’t Avoid

Daniel sat down again.

His shoulders had dropped.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Would it have changed anything?”

“Of course.”

I waited.

He looked toward Tiffany.

She looked back at him.

“Daniel?” I said.

He rubbed both hands over his face.

“I don’t know.”

Tiffany stiffened.

“What does that mean?”

He turned toward her.

“It means every time something got too expensive, I called Mom.”

“Because she offered to help.”

“At the beginning.”

“So now this is my fault?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“It sounds like you did.”

Richard moved toward them.

“This isn’t helping.”

Daniel ignored him.

He looked at me.

“It was easier.”

“What was?”

He glanced at Tiffany again.

“Calling you.”

Tiffany stood.

“Excuse me?”

Daniel’s voice remained low.

“When you wanted something and I said it was too expensive, we fought. When I called Mom, she usually said yes.”

Nobody moved.

“So I called Mom.”

Tiffany stared at him.

“You told me she wanted to pay.”

“Sometimes she did.”

“Daniel.”

He looked down.

“Sometimes I just didn’t want another argument.”

There it was.

Not some complicated scheme.

Not a secret plan.

My son had kept asking because asking me was easier than disappointing his fiancée.

I pointed toward my cheek.

The mark was faint now.

“And last night?”

Daniel looked up.

“Mom—”

“Why did you stand there?”

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Tiffany stepped forward.

“I already said I was overwhelmed.”

I turned to her.

“You haven’t apologized.”

She stared at me.

“I shouldn’t have reacted that way.”

“That isn’t an apology.”

Cynthia said her daughter’s name quietly.

“Tiffany.”

Tiffany exhaled.

“Fine. I’m sorry I slapped you.”

I nodded once.

“Thank you.”

She seemed surprised I didn’t say more.

Then I looked at Daniel.

“I’m waiting.”

His eyes filled, though he blinked quickly.

“I should have stopped her.”

I said nothing.

“I should have come after you.”

His voice dropped.

“Instead, I asked you to leave because I wanted the problem to disappear.”

I pushed the wedding invoices toward him.

“That’s what you’ve been doing for a long time.”

What I Would No Longer Pay For

Richard wanted to discuss reimbursements.

I refused.

Cynthia wanted everyone to agree that emotions had gotten out of hand.

I refused that too.

There was nothing complicated about what happened.

Tiffany had struck me.

Daniel had remained silent.

I had stopped paying.

I walked them to the front door.

Before Daniel stepped outside, he turned around.

“What happens now?”

It was such a familiar question.

He had asked versions of it since he was a boy.

What happens now, Mom?

What should I do, Mom?

Can you fix this, Mom?

I looked at him.

“You go home with your wife.”

He waited.

“And?”

“And you figure out your marriage.”

“Are you saying you don’t want to see me?”

“No.”

I touched his arm.

“I’m saying I’m your mother. I’m not your emergency fund.”

He looked down.

“I understand.”

“I hope you do.”

Tiffany was already walking toward their car.

Daniel followed her.

This time, I didn’t call him back.

After they left, I returned to the dining room.

The wedding invoices were still scattered across the table.

Beside them sat Thomas’s travel folder.

I opened it.

Inside were old notes in his handwriting.

Bar Harbor.

Camden.

Burlington.

A little inn in Vermont he had circled twice.

I had sold four acres.

I couldn’t undo that.

I had spent more than forty-five thousand dollars.

I couldn’t undo that either.

But I could stop treating every mistake as a debt I owed.

I gathered the wedding invoices and put them back in the cream folder.

Then I picked up Thomas’s travel folder and placed it on top.

My phone buzzed.

Daniel.

For a moment, habit took over.

My hand moved toward it.

Then I stopped.

I poured myself another cup of coffee and carried it onto the porch.

The phone could wait.

For the first time in years, so could Daniel.
