Behind Closed Doors Moral Stories

My Mother-in-Law Bought Expensive Christmas Gifts for Every Grandchild—Then Gave My 7-Year-Old Daughter a $4 Candle With “To Brandon’s Girl” Written on the Tag. My Husband Said Nothing Until the Next Morning, When Holly Found Her Seat Marked “GUEST,” Reached Into Her Bag, and Placed a Red Velvet Box in Front of Grandma: “Dad Said This Is for You.”

Part 2 of 3

Then Brandon became serious again.

“You’re my daughter.”

Holly looked at the card.

“But Grandma Gene—”

“Grandma Gene doesn’t get to decide that.”

“Because you married Mom?”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“Because I chose to be your dad, and you chose to let me.”

Holly was quiet.

Brandon stood and went to his coat.

When he returned, he was holding the red velvet box.

He placed it in Holly’s hands.

She immediately tried to open it.

Brandon gently closed her fingers around it.

“Not for you.”

“Then who?”

“Grandma Gene.”

I stared at him.

Holly did too.

“Why?”

Brandon sat beside her.

“Tomorrow Grandma’s having everybody over for brunch.”

Holly nodded.

“If she treats you like everybody else, this stays in your bag.”

“And if she doesn’t?”

Brandon looked at me before answering.

“Then you decide whether she gets it.”

I finally asked:

“Brandon, what is inside that thing?”

“A boundary.”

I frowned.

“That’s not an answer.”

“It will be tomorrow.”

Holly held the box against her pajamas.

Then her face changed.

“Will Grandma be mad?”

“Probably.”

“At me?”

Brandon hesitated.

“Maybe.”

Holly’s next question came so quietly I almost missed it.

“If she gets mad, are you still going to be my dad?”

Brandon’s face went completely still.

He took the box from her and set it aside.

Then he pulled her against him.

“There is nothing your grandmother can say, do, buy, write, or call you that changes that.”

Holly pressed her face against his shoulder.

Brandon looked over her head at me.

Neither of us said anything.

The vanilla candle sat on the nightstand beside them.

The Place Card Said “GUEST”

The next morning, Gene acted as though Christmas had been wonderful.

By ten-thirty, relatives were arriving for brunch.

She had set her dining table with white china, gold napkin rings, and handwritten place cards.

I noticed the cards immediately.

LAUREN.

MICHAEL.

BEN.

SOPHIE.

JACKSON.

Every adult.

Every child.

Every person had a name.

Except one.

At the far end of the table, beside the kitchen doorway, Holly’s card said:

GUEST.

I stopped walking.

Brandon was directly behind me.

I felt his hand touch my back.

Gene came through carrying a pitcher of orange juice.

“There you are. Sit anywhere, everyone.”

I picked up Holly’s card.

“Gene.”

She looked at it.

“Yes?”

“What is this?”

“A place card.”

“Why does Holly’s say ‘Guest’?”

Gene sighed.

Not angrily.

Almost patiently.

“Because I ran out of time last night.”

I looked at the other fourteen handwritten cards.

“You had time to write everybody else’s name.”

“Please don’t start this again.”

Brandon stepped forward.

But before he could say anything, Holly touched his arm.

She had heard everything.

She looked at the card.

Then she looked at Gene.

Her face was calm.

Too calm for a seven-year-old.

Gene gave her a bright smile.

“Come sit down, sweetheart. Nobody cares what a little card says.”

Holly reached into her small backpack.

My stomach dropped when I saw the red velvet box.

She carried it around the table.

Gene’s smile disappeared.

Holly stopped directly in front of her.

Then she held out the box.

“Dad told me to give this directly to you if you ever ignored me again.”

Someone behind me set down a coffee cup.

Gene stared at Brandon.

“Seriously?”

Then she laughed once.

“This is incredibly dramatic.”

Brandon walked around the table.

He stopped behind Holly.

He didn’t raise his voice.

“Open the box, Mom.”

Gene looked around at the family.

Nobody moved.

Finally, she took it.

She lifted the lid.

And screamed.

Inside the red velvet was a single brass key.

Beside it was a folded white card.

Gene pulled the card out.

I watched her read it.

Her face changed before I even knew what the words said.

“You changed the locks?”

Brandon said nothing.

Gene looked up.

“Brandon.”

He placed one hand on Holly’s shoulder.

The Key Gene Could No Longer Use

Gene unfolded the card completely.

Later, Brandon showed it to me.

It wasn’t a legal document.

It wasn’t a threat.

It was three sentences.

The locks at our house were changed last week.
