My Husband’s Assistant Told Me His “Wife and Son” Were Waiting Upstairs—While My Little Girl Clutched the Gift She’d Made for Him, I Realized We Had Been Left Off the Guest List, but the Secret Behind That Door Was Nothing Like I Feared

Part 2 of 3

“I don’t know what he meant by that. They aren’t related to him.”

Nora swallowed. “So he arranged a private room for a woman and her child, removed his wife and daughter from the guest list, and left his assistant to explain it.”

Claire did not look away. “Yes.”

Bianca spoke from the doorway. “Adrian told me the room was for his family. He said the woman and the boy had to stay out of sight until he could speak with them.”

“Did he tell you why?”

“No.”

Claire continued. “Meredith raised concerns about payments made to a consulting firm. She believed the invoices were being approved without the work described in them. She brought her records to Adrian before she left the company.”

“When did she leave?”

“Three months ago.”

“And now she’s in a hotel suite with my husband?”

“She asked for a meeting with him. She refused to come to the office because she thought her messages were being monitored.”

Nora turned toward Bianca. “Did you know?”

Bianca’s answer came too quickly. “No.”

Claire’s eyes stayed on her. “You received the changed guest list from Adrian’s account, correct?”

“Yes.”

“And the room reservation?”

“I made it.”

“Under whose name?”

Bianca glanced at Nora. “Mine.”

Lucy picked up a sandwich and examined it with the wary care of a child who had been promised a special evening and was no longer sure what the evening was for.

“You can eat, sweetheart.”

“Is Daddy mad at us?” Lucy asked.

Nora’s throat tightened. “No. This is an adult problem, and it isn’t your fault.”

Claire lowered her voice. “Nora, before you decide what this means about your marriage, you should hear from Meredith. But you don’t owe anyone a private conversation if you don’t want one.”

Nora stood. “I want to hear it from Adrian first.”

Daniel was waiting in the corridor, still on his phone. He ended the call when he saw Claire.

“The bank has put a hold on the renewal,” he said. “They’re asking for a compliance review. The renewal was approved last week.”

“That’s my brother’s decision,” Nora said. “He has questions about the company’s liabilities. I didn’t ask him to interfere.”

“If there’s a review, we should handle it through counsel,” Daniel said.

“That is what we’re doing,” Claire replied. “No records are to be moved, deleted, or altered. Daniel, please notify the audit committee and preserve the payment files.”

Adrian stood near the window in his dark suit, his tie loosened. A woman with silver-blond hair sat at the table, one hand resting on a folder, while a boy of about nine worked quietly on a puzzle beside her. Adrian turned toward Nora, and for a brief moment his face showed relief before it gave way to dread.

“Nora.”

She stayed near the doorway. “You left my name off the list.”

Adrian looked at Lucy, then at the paper necklace in her hand. “I can explain.”

“You had all afternoon to explain.”

Meredith stood. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know your daughter would be here.”

“Neither did Adrian, apparently,” Nora said, and she heard the bitterness in her own voice.

Adrian took a breath. “Meredith brought documents that could affect the company. I needed to speak with her before the board meeting.”

“So you hid her upstairs?”

“I was trying to keep her safe.”

“From whom?”

“From people inside the company who might pressure her to take back what she said.”

Meredith spoke carefully. “I didn’t ask him to hide me. I asked for a private meeting because I was concerned the records would disappear.”

Nora looked at Adrian. “And you thought the best way to protect her was to make your wife look like a stranger in the lobby?”

He looked down. “I didn’t think Bianca would say it that way.”

“You told her to keep us out.”

“I told her the room had to remain private until I spoke with Meredith.”

“You changed the guest list.”

Lucy clutched the necklace with both hands. “Daddy, I made this for you.”

“I’m sorry, sweetheart,” he said.

“Why didn’t you want me there?”

“I did want you there. I made a bad choice because I was trying to manage too many things at once.”

“That doesn’t make it feel better,” Nora said.

“I know.”

The Records

Claire asked Meredith to explain the documents. The older woman opened the folder and laid out a sequence of invoices, approval emails, and account summaries. The consulting firm belonged to a man named Peter Lang, who had once advised Whitaker Industrial on a warehouse expansion. The company had continued paying his firm for months after the project ended, with each invoice labeled as strategic planning or market analysis.

“I didn’t approve the payments,” Meredith said. “I asked for the reports they were supposed to produce. They never arrived. When I raised the issue, I was told the work was confidential.”

“Who approved the invoices?” Daniel asked.

Meredith pointed to the initials at the bottom. “Several people, including me on the first few, before I understood what I was looking at. After that, the approvals came through Adrian’s office.”

Adrian’s face reddened. “I approved them because Peter was advising me on a potential acquisition.”
