Part 1 of 3

The Dinner My Husband Thought I Would Never Remember

Dinner that Tuesday evening looked so ordinary that, for a few minutes, I almost convinced myself I had been imagining everything.

My husband, Brennan Pike, stood at the kitchen counter in our home outside Lexington, Kentucky, dividing roasted chicken and vegetables onto three plates. Our eight-year-old son, Wyatt, sat at the table explaining a science project involving baking soda, vinegar, and a volcano he was determined to make “bigger than everyone else’s.”

I smiled at him while Brennan carried the plates over.

Then Brennan asked a question that made the muscles in my shoulders tighten.

“Did you ever finish looking through those bank statements?”

I kept my expression neutral.

“Almost.”

He nodded as if the answer meant nothing.

But I had been married to Brennan for eleven years. I knew the small movements he made when he was nervous.

His thumb rubbed the side of his wedding ring.

For the past five weeks, money had been disappearing from our savings account.

Not enough at once to cause an immediate alarm.

$1,800 here.

$2,400 there.

Another transfer for $3,100.

Whenever I asked, Brennan had an explanation. Equipment for his contracting business. Vendor payments. A temporary cash-flow problem.

The explanations sounded reasonable until I began checking them.

Several payments had gone to an account I did not recognize.

That morning, I had quietly scheduled a meeting with a financial adviser named Lauren Meyers for nine o’clock the next day.

I had told no one.

At least, I thought I hadn’t.

I took another bite of dinner.

Less than a minute later, the room seemed to shift sideways.

I blinked.

My hands felt strangely heavy.

Across the table, Wyatt stopped talking.

“Mom?”

His voice sounded distant.

“I feel weird.”

I tried to stand.

My knees gave way before I reached him.

I fell beside my chair, my shoulder striking the tile.

My eyes closed.

But I could still hear everything.

The Call I Was Never Supposed to Hear

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then I heard Brennan’s footsteps.

I expected panic.

I expected him to call our names, reach for his phone, or run toward us.

Instead, he walked calmly around the table.

He picked up my phone.

Then Wyatt’s tablet.

A moment later, I heard him enter his home office.

His voice carried through the hallway.

“It’s handled.”

My heart began pounding.

There was a pause while the person on the other end answered.

Then Brennan spoke again.

“No. She won’t make the meeting tomorrow.”

Every part of me went cold.

He knew.

Somehow, Brennan knew about my appointment.

Another pause.

Then:

“The boy?”

I tried not to react.

Brennan lowered his voice.

“He noticed more than I expected.”

My fingers wanted to curl into fists, but I forced them to remain still.

Another long silence.

Then he said something I would remember for the rest of my life.

“After tonight, neither one of them can interfere anymore.”

His footsteps returned.

I closed my eyes completely.

Brennan crouched beside me and pressed two fingers against my wrist.

I let my arm stay limp.

Then he moved toward Wyatt.

“This will make everything easier,” he murmured.

A cabinet opened.

Something went into a bag.

Then I heard the garage door.

An engine started.

I waited until the sound disappeared down the street.

Only then did I open my eyes.

Wyatt was already staring at me.

I put one finger against my lips.

“Don’t talk yet.”

His face was pale.

He crawled toward me.

“Mom, I saw Dad do something.”

I pulled him closer.

“What did you see?”

“He had a little bottle. He put something on our food when he thought I was doing homework.”

I looked at the plates still sitting on the table.

Suddenly, Brennan’s strange calm made sense.

The disappearing money.

My meeting.

Dinner.

The phones.

And now Wyatt.

Whatever Brennan was planning, we needed help before he returned.

The Forgotten Phone

Years earlier, Brennan had repeatedly complained about the old landline inside the kitchen pantry.

He called it useless.

I had never bothered canceling it.

That forgotten phone may have been the most valuable thing in our house that night.

I crawled toward the pantry, pulled the receiver down, and called emergency services.

I gave our address and explained that my son and I had suddenly become extremely drowsy after eating a meal prepared by my husband.

I also explained what I had overheard.

The dispatcher told me help was coming.

After hanging up, I returned to the table.

Evidence.

The word flashed through my mind.

If Brennan came back and cleaned the kitchen, the dinner might disappear.

I grabbed a food-storage container and placed portions of my meal inside it.

Then I buried the container beneath frozen vegetables in the freezer.

Wyatt stood beside the window.

His expression suddenly changed.

“Mom.”

Headlights swept across our driveway.

Brennan’s truck.

He had come back.

“Floor. Now.”

We returned to almost exactly the positions where we had fallen.

Seconds later, the back door opened.

Brennan entered.

He didn’t check on us first.

He went directly to the table.

Through barely opened eyes, I watched him scrape the remaining food into a trash bag.

He wiped the plates.

Then he made another call.

“The kitchen is clean.”
