Nolan’s face changed immediately.

“Mr. Ellison. I wasn’t expecting you.”

“I know.”

Patrice came out of the dining room.

“With respect, Graham, this is a private matter between husband and wife.”

My father looked at her.

“It stopped being private when my daughter told me she wasn’t allowed to leave her own home.”

Nolan looked at me.

“You made it sound worse than it was.”

I turned down the burner.

“I told him exactly what happened.”

Dad placed a blue folder on the kitchen island.

“Then we should clear up a few things about marriage, money, and this condo.”

I opened the folder.

Inside was a certified copy of the deed, property records, insurance documents, and the occupancy agreement my father had prepared years earlier.

The condo belonged to him.

He had purchased it before Nolan and I married and had allowed me to live there.

Nolan had always known that.

Somewhere along the way, however, he had begun calling it “our property.”

Patrice leaned toward the documents.

“My son lives here. He has rights.”

Dad nodded.

“He has whatever rights the law gives him as a spouse and resident. What he does not have is a deed with his name on it.”

I placed another document beside the folder.

“And starting today, our finances are separate.”

Nolan picked it up.

His expression hardened.

“What is this?”

“Confirmation that your additional credit card has been canceled.”

“You can’t do that.”

“The account is mine.”

“I depend on that card.”

I looked directly at him.

“That is exactly the problem.”

What the Red Folder Revealed

The second knock came about ten minutes later.

A courier handed me a red folder from my office.

Inside were six months of account statements.

I had asked my assistant to flag expenses I didn’t recognize.

Restaurants.

Electronics.

Subscription services.

A premium gym membership.

Small transfers.

Then I found one charge that made me stop.

$4,800.

Patrice’s name appeared beside it.

“What is this?”

Nobody answered.

I turned the statement toward Nolan.

“Almost five thousand dollars. I don’t recognize it.”

“It’s nothing.”

He answered much too quickly.

Patrice looked toward the window.

“It was a loan.”

I opened the supporting transaction details my assistant had printed.

It wasn’t a loan.

It was payment toward a resort package in Florida.

Two adults.

Nolan Mercer.

Patrice Mercer.

I slowly lifted my eyes.

“You planned a vacation?”

Nolan said nothing.

“With my card?”

Patrice finally snapped.

“You earn more than enough money. Nolan is your husband. Family money belongs to the family.”

For the first time that morning, I smiled.

Not because anything was funny.

Because suddenly everything was clear.

“That’s interesting.”

Patrice frowned.

“What is?”

“You spent months telling me I worked too much while quietly enjoying everything my work paid for.”

I turned to my father.

“Dad?”

He nodded toward the two maintenance men.

“Gentlemen, get the replacement lock ready.”

Nolan stepped forward.

“Nobody is changing anything.”

My father didn’t move.

“You have a choice. Handle this calmly with Brooke today, or let attorneys handle it tomorrow.”

That was when I pulled the final document from the red folder.

Nolan recognized it before I said a word.

All the confidence disappeared from his face.
