Miles frowned.

“Does he know about us?”

Sloane shook her head.

“No. He doesn’t.”

Sadie looked genuinely confused.

“How can somebody have four kids and not know?”

That was the question Sloane had feared.

She moved closer.

“Because adults sometimes make decisions based on incomplete information. Sometimes people believe the wrong person. And sometimes the truth takes longer to reach someone than it should.”

June studied her face.

“Do you still like him?”

Sloane smiled sadly.

“I want him to understand the truth. That’s different.”

Caleb asked the question that mattered most.

“Do we have to call him Dad?”

Sloane immediately shook her head.

“Absolutely not. You don’t owe anyone a relationship just because you share DNA. Tonight, all you have to do is be yourselves.”

The Four Children at the Door

The Caldwell home stood outside Middleton, surrounded by snow-covered trees and carefully placed white Christmas lights.

Cars filled the circular driveway.

Through the tall windows, Sloane could see dozens of guests moving beneath chandeliers.

She looked at her children.

“Ready?”

Sadie nodded.

“Definitely.”

Caleb looked less certain, but he took June’s hand.

Sloane rang the bell.

A staff member opened the door.

The first person to notice her was Duncan.

He had been standing near the dining room entrance holding a glass when his expression changed.

“Sloane?”

Then he noticed Caleb.

His hand lowered.

His eyes moved to Miles.

Then Sadie.

Then June.

Something disappeared from Duncan’s face.

Confidence.

The room gradually became quiet as other guests followed his stare.

Lenora Caldwell sat near the head of the table.

She looked from Sloane to the four children.

Her face tightened.

“Why are you here with them?”

Sloane removed her coat.

“Duncan invited me.”

Duncan barely seemed to hear her.

He was staring at Caleb.

“Who are these children?”

Sloane reached into her bag.

She removed a dark green box tied with a silver ribbon and placed it on the table.

“You wanted me to see what a family future looked like.”

She pushed the box toward him.

“So I brought mine.”

The Christmas Gift That Changed the Room

Duncan untied the ribbon.

Inside were four envelopes.

CALEB.

MILES.

SADIE.

JUNE.

He opened Caleb’s first.

The room remained silent while he read the birth record.

His eyes stopped at the date.

He looked at Sloane.

Then he opened the DNA report.

His face changed.

“Sloane…”

She did not answer.

Duncan opened Miles’s envelope.

Then Sadie’s.

Then June’s.

By the fourth report, he was no longer pretending to understand what was happening.

“They’re mine?”

Sloane held his gaze.

“Yes.”

Duncan looked toward the children.

Seven years old.

Four entire lives.

Four first Christmases.

Four first steps.

Four first words.

Four first days of school.

All gone from his memory because he had never been there to create those memories.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Sloane’s expression remained calm.

“I tried.”

Lenora suddenly stood.

“Duncan, this is completely inappropriate. You have no idea whether any of this is legitimate.”

Marissa stepped forward for the first time.

“Actually, we do.”

She placed another folder on the table.

Lenora recognized her.

And Sloane saw fear appear behind the older woman’s eyes.

The Records Nobody Expected Her to Find

Marissa opened the folder.

“Independent testing confirmed paternity. We also reviewed Mrs. Merritt’s original medical records.”

Lenora interrupted.

“This is Christmas dinner, not a courtroom.”

“Then perhaps nobody should have built eight years of family history around altered information,” Marissa replied.

Duncan turned sharply.

“Altered information?”

Sloane finally explained what they had found.

The original specialist had never declared that Sloane could not have children.

The report had discussed uncertainty and additional evaluation.

But the version shown to Duncan had been different.

Someone had turned uncertainty into certainty.

Duncan stared at his mother.

“Did you know about this?”

Lenora said nothing.

That silence answered more than denial would have.

Duncan stood slowly.

“Mom.”

Lenora finally spoke.

“I was protecting your future.”

Duncan looked at the four children standing near Sloane.

“From them?”

“From a marriage that was becoming complicated.”

Sadie stepped forward before Sloane could stop her.
