“By yourself?”

“Yes.”

His voice rose.

“You abandoned me in Cancún.”

“You have your mother and your sister.”

“That’s not the point.”

“I thought you wanted a family vacation.”

He lowered his voice.

“Unlock the card.”

There it was.

Not come back.

Not are you okay.

Not even why did you leave?

“No.”

“Valeria, don’t be childish.”

“I’m not unlocking it.”

“Karla barely brought any money because I told her we’d cover things.”

“Then you shouldn’t have told her that.”

He went quiet.

I could hear voices behind him.

Then Carmen came onto the line.

“Valeria, whatever disagreement you’re having with your husband should not involve the rest of us.”

I looked at my wedding ring on the table.

“But my money was allowed to involve the rest of you?”

Silence.

“That’s different,” she said.

“Why?”

She didn’t answer.

Diego took the phone back.

“We’ll deal with this when I get home.”

“Yes,” I said. “We will.”

I ended the call.

For the rest of my stay, I didn’t block him.

I simply stopped answering.

What Was Waiting at Home

I returned two days before Diego.

Not because I wanted to surprise him.

I needed time.

My attorney had prepared the paperwork to begin ending the marriage. Because we’d been married such a short time and most of my significant assets predated the marriage or came through inheritance, the financial picture was simpler than Diego probably expected.

I moved my personal documents out of the house.

I removed Diego’s access from the accounts that belonged solely to me.

I photographed the recent card statements.

Then I packed what I needed.

When Diego came home Sunday evening, his suitcase rolled loudly across the entryway.

He found me sitting at the kitchen island.

The same place where he’d shown me the four airline confirmations.

A large envelope sat between us.

He looked exhausted.

“Where’s your stuff?”

“Somewhere safe.”

His eyes moved to the envelope.

“What is that?”

I pushed it toward him.

He opened it.

His face changed before he’d finished the first page.

“You’re filing for divorce?”

“Yes.”

He dropped the papers on the counter.

“Over a vacation?”

I looked at him.

“No.”

“Then what?”

“You told your mother you knew how to control me.”

He stopped moving.

I watched him search for an answer.

“You heard that?”

“Yes.”

“Valeria, that was a joke.”

“Was using my card a joke?”

“I was going to pay you back.”

“Was telling your sister we’d pay for her trip a joke?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“They’re my family.”

“And what am I?”

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

I picked up the bent Cancún confirmation I’d kept from the original set and placed it beside the divorce papers.

“That’s what I’m trying to figure out.”

The Number He Never Expected

A week later, we met with attorneys to discuss finances.

Diego arrived believing our marriage meant my income, savings, and property were essentially part of one large marital pool.

Then my attorney explained what belonged to me before Diego and what had come from my parents.

The two commercial properties.

The investment portfolio.

My ownership interest in the transportation company.

Diego stared at the summary.

“Wait.”

He looked at me.

“You own those buildings?”

“Yes.”

“Both?”

“Yes.”

He kept reading.

Then he looked at the company documents.

“You told me you worked there.”

“I do.”

“You never said you owned that much of it.”

“You never asked.”

He leaned back.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Diego said something that ended whatever uncertainty I still had.

“If I’d known you had this kind of money, I never would’ve let Mom and Karla treat you that way.”

My attorney stopped writing.

I looked directly at Diego.

“Why?”

He frowned.

“What?”

“Why would knowing I had money change how I deserved to be treated?”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“Then explain it.”

He looked toward his attorney.

His attorney didn’t help him.

I asked the only question that mattered.

“If I really had nobody, Diego—if my parents were gone, I had an ordinary salary, and nowhere else to go—would what you did have been okay?”

He looked down at the table.

I waited.

He never answered.

I didn’t need another one.

One Passenger

Diego eventually stopped fighting the divorce.

Without access to my card and without the lifestyle he’d quietly assumed would become his, he moved into a smaller apartment.

Carmen and Karla stopped contacting me after it became clear I wasn’t paying for anything else.

Months later, Diego sent me one final message.

He didn’t apologize well.

But one sentence was honest.

I thought because you didn’t have family, you’d never actually leave.

I read it twice.

Then I deleted it.

I kept the old Cancún confirmation for a while.

Eventually, I found it in a drawer beside my passport—the paper still creased where I’d folded it at the airport.

I tore it the rest of the way and dropped it into the trash.

The next trip I booked had only one name on the reservation.

Mine.
