My Fiancée Tossed $20 at My Ex-Wife as She Walked Alone Down a Kentucky Road With Two Babies Strapped to Her Chest. But My Ex Didn’t Look Angry—She Looked Sorry for Me. Hours Later, I Reopened Our Divorce File… and Realized the Two Babies Weren’t the Biggest Secret She Had Kept From Me.

Part 2 of 3

Martin looked toward the floor.

“She said she only wanted information.”

“She paid you to alter evidence.”

He did not deny it.

The watch had been placed in Elise’s closet during a dinner Sabrina attended at our home. The emails had been assembled from fragments of genuine messages. Even the hotel employee who claimed to recognize Elise had received money through an intermediary.

The woman I planned to marry had built every piece of the case that ended my marriage, and Martin had helped her.

Before I could fully absorb that truth, I found a sealed envelope bearing the name of a private maternity clinic in Louisville. Inside were two birth certificates.

Both listed Elise as the mother.

Both listed me as the father.

My knees weakened, and I lowered myself into the nearest chair.

The children beside the road were my sons.

Behind the certificates was a handwritten instruction on a small sheet of paper:

“If Gavin discovers the twins, make certain he never learns what became of the third child.”

I read it twice before asking what it meant.

Martin’s face lost what little color remained.

“Elise delivered three babies,” he admitted. “Two boys and a girl.”

The Missing Daughter

The medical records showed that our daughter had required specialized treatment shortly after her arrival. A transfer had been authorized to move her to another facility, yet no receiving hospital was listed.

A woman had signed the order under the title of patient liaison.

Sabrina Lowell.

“Where was my daughter taken?” I demanded.

“Sabrina told me the baby hadn’t made it through the complications,” Martin said.

“Did you confirm that?”

His silence was enough.

I copied every document and contacted a detective my company had worked with on an insurance investigation. Then I drove home, forcing myself to remain calm long enough to learn what Sabrina knew.

She was standing in our formal living room when I arrived, wearing the gown she had chosen for our wedding. A seamstress was pinning the hem while Sabrina studied herself in the mirror.

“You’re home early,” she said.

I asked the seamstress to leave and placed the records across the coffee table.

Sabrina looked at the staged photographs, Martin’s payment statements, and the three medical files. Her pleasant expression gradually disappeared.

“Where is my daughter?” I asked.

She removed one glove with deliberate care.

“You believed the story because you wanted to believe it,” she replied. “Blaming Elise was easier than admitting you had neglected your marriage.”

The accusation hurt because part of it was true. I had spent years building my company while Elise ate dinner alone and attended family events without me. Yet my failures did not excuse what Sabrina had done.

“Tell me where the child is.”

“You won’t find her.”

She reached for her phone and hurried toward the rear door. When I caught the device before she could conceal it, the screen displayed a new message.

“She saw you on the county road. Move the girl before midnight.”

The sender was saved as “Mom.”

Sabrina’s mother, Diane Lowell, directed a private child-placement foundation with offices across Kentucky and Ohio. Her public reputation had been built on elegant charity dinners and carefully photographed acts of generosity.

At last, the scheme made sense. Sabrina had wanted my name, my company, and the social position that accompanied them. She had removed Elise from my life, hidden my children, and prepared to marry me before I could discover any of it.

The police arrived soon afterward. Sabrina refused to answer their questions, but the message on her phone gave the authorities a place to begin.

I could not remain in that house and wait.

I remembered the direction Elise had been walking and drove back toward the countryside.

The Farmhouse

Night had settled over the fields by the time I saw Elise outside an old white farmhouse. She held one baby while the other slept in a portable carrier on the porch.

I stopped several yards away, afraid that approaching too quickly would frighten her.

“Elise, I know about the twins.”

Her shoulders tightened.
