Part 2 of 3

Cassidy almost smiled.

“That sounds like Bennett.”

Elise leaned forward.

“Were you diagnosed as infertile?”

“No.”

Cassidy opened a copy of her records on her phone.

“I had challenges. That isn’t the same thing.”

Elise studied the report.

Her face changed.

“He’s had me doing tests for seven months.”

Cassidy looked up.

Elise continued.

“Every time something comes back normal, he says we need another test because I’m thirty-eight and statistically the problem is probably me.”

Cassidy felt a familiar anger, but it was quieter now.

Not explosive.

Recognizable.

She opened two old text messages from Bennett.

The first said:

“Mom thinks it is easier if people believe you hid your fertility issues.”

The second:

“If my father finds out about my results, he’ll look at me differently.”

Elise sat completely still.

Then she whispered:

“His father plans to hand him control of the family company after the wedding.”

Before Cassidy could respond, Elise’s phone lit up.

Lorraine.

Elise read the message aloud.

“Don’t show anyone the second invoice. Your future with Bennett depends on keeping this between women.”

Cassidy slowly looked at her.

“There’s a second invoice?”

Elise nodded.

And for the first time that afternoon, she no longer looked frightened.

She looked determined.

The Wedding Nobody Expected

The wedding was held at a luxury hotel in Charlotte.

At 6:40 p.m., Cassidy entered with Grant and a triple stroller.

Bennett was standing near the staircase greeting guests.

The moment he saw her, his smile disappeared.

Then he noticed the babies.

Lorraine followed his stare.

Cassidy walked closer.

Bennett pointed toward the stroller.

“They’re yours?”

“All three.”

He blinked.

Then, incredibly, he asked:

“Biologically?”

Cassidy held his gaze.

“You no longer get to ask questions about my body.”

Lorraine stepped between them.

“Today is not the day for bitterness.”

Cassidy gave her a calm smile.

“I agree. You invited me.”

Bennett gestured toward the babies.

“I didn’t expect you to bring all of this.”

Grant stiffened.

Cassidy gently touched his arm.

Then she turned back to Bennett.

“‘All of this’ is my family.”

At that moment, the bridal suite door opened.

Elise appeared.

She was wearing her wedding dress but had not yet put on her veil.

The blue folder was tucked beneath her arm.

“Perfect,” she said. “Everyone is here.”

The First Invoice

Bennett moved toward her.

“Elise, let’s go upstairs.”

She stepped away.

“No. Every time we talk privately, your version changes later.”

Several nearby guests went quiet.

Lorraine lowered her voice.

“Don’t turn a private medical issue into entertainment.”

Elise opened the folder.

“Privacy didn’t seem important when you spent two years letting people believe Cassidy was the reason Bennett couldn’t have children.”

A tall older man approached.

Bennett’s father, Warren Langford.

He had spent decades building Langford Supply Group and was expected to announce Bennett as the company’s next CEO shortly after the wedding.

“What is she talking about?”

Bennett’s face lost color.

“Dad, this is personal.”

Elise held up the first invoice.

“Bennett had fertility testing and a specialist consultation before he ended his engagement to Cassidy.”

Warren looked at his son.

“Your results were abnormal?”

Bennett hesitated.

“They weren’t conclusive.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Finally Bennett said:

“Some numbers were low. It could have been temporary.”

Elise shook her head.

“And you let me spend seven months believing there was something wrong with me.”

“I never said that.”

She laughed once.

“You said it in six different ways.”

Cassidy quietly added:

“He did the same thing to me.”

The Second Invoice

Elise pulled another document from the folder.

Bennett immediately looked toward his mother.

That reaction told Cassidy almost everything.

Elise handed the page to Warren.

His expression changed.

“Why did the company pay this?”

Nobody answered.

The medical expense had been listed in company records as executive health consulting.

Lorraine finally spoke.

“It was a small reimbursement.”

Warren looked at her.

“Who approved it?”

Silence.

Elise unlocked her phone.

“Lorraine sent me a message this morning telling me not to show this invoice to anyone.”

Lorraine stepped forward.

“You’re removing it from context.”

Elise read the message.

Then she handed the phone to Warren.

He scrolled.

His face became harder with every line.

One message instructed someone to classify the expense as consulting so Bennett’s name would not appear before the board meeting.

Another was worse.

“If Cassidy asks questions, keep the story that she couldn’t have children. The fewer people looking at Bennett, the better.”

Cassidy felt something twist inside her.

Not surprise.

Confirmation.

Warren looked at Lorraine.

“You used Cassidy as a cover?”

Lorraine crossed her arms.

“I protected our son.”

Cassidy finally spoke.

“No. You protected an image. You used me to do it.”

Lorraine looked directly at her.
