Happy Soul Moral Stories

My Husband Told Me He Was Performing Emergency Surgery All Night—Minutes Later I Found Him Kissing Another Woman at Dallas Airport While His Entire Family Boarded a Vacation Without Me, So I Made One Call That Froze Every Dollar Connected to My Inheritance Before I Learned Someone Had Been Using My Name for Something Far Worse

Part 2 of 3

Jack.

His name flashed across the screen.

Once.

Twice.

Five times.

Then a text.

Where are you?

Another.

Why did the bank just freeze our transfer?

Another.

Call me NOW.

Gerald looked at me.

“He found out faster than I expected.”

Jack Comes Running

Jack arrived less than an hour later.

His tie was crooked.

His hair looked as though he’d been running.

He pushed through Gerald’s office door without waiting for permission.

“Megan!”

He stopped when he saw Gerald sitting beside me.

His face lost what little color remained.

“What’s going on?”

I didn’t answer.

He looked from me to Gerald.

Then back again.

“The bank froze everything.”

“Not everything,” Gerald replied calmly.

“Only the accounts connected to Megan’s inherited property.”

Jack stared.

“Inherited property?”

Gerald folded his hands.

“The authority you previously held has been temporarily suspended.”

Jack forced a laugh.

“There has to be some mistake.”

No one joined him.

He turned toward me.

“Meg… just talk to me.”

I finally spoke.

“How was surgery?”

His shoulders stiffened.

“What?”

“Did the patient survive?”

He looked at the floor.

Then back at me.

“You followed me.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I was already there.”

The room became very quiet.

Jack closed his eyes for a moment.

When he opened them again, he didn’t deny it.

“I’m sorry.”

Those were the first honest words he had spoken all day.

“How long?” I asked.

He swallowed.

“Seven months.”

The answer landed harder than I expected.

Not because I hadn’t guessed.

Because he had answered without trying to lie again.

“The vacation?”

He nodded.

“Everyone knew?”

Another nod.

I looked down at the folded welcome sign I had carried from the airport.

It was still in my purse.

Still unopened.

Jack followed my eyes.

His voice became smaller.

“I didn’t know how to tell the kids.”

“You didn’t tell me either.”

He didn’t respond.

Gerald quietly slid a folder across the table.

“Unfortunately, Doctor Walker, your affair is no longer the only issue.”

Jack frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

Gerald opened the folder.

Inside were several loan summaries he had received minutes earlier from one of the financial institutions.

He pointed to a highlighted paragraph.

“Can you explain why there is a pending multimillion-dollar commercial loan listing collateral connected to Megan’s inherited investment portfolio?”

Jack froze.

Completely.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Finally he whispered,

“…I can explain.”

Gerald didn’t move.

“Then explain why Megan has never heard about it.”

Jack stared at the documents as though he were seeing them for the first time.

I watched his face.

The fear there looked different from the fear of being caught cheating.

Much different.

Gerald slowly closed the folder.

“I think we’ve just discovered something far more serious than an affair.”

The Signature That Was Never Mine

Jack did not sit down.

He kept staring at the loan documents on Gerald’s conference table as if he hoped they would disappear if he looked long enough.

Finally he rubbed both hands over his face.

“I was going to tell you.”

I folded my arms.

“When? After the bank owned my inheritance?”

He looked at me but couldn’t hold my eyes.

Gerald calmly opened another page.

“The lender approved a multimillion-dollar commercial loan three weeks ago. These assets were listed as additional collateral.”

He tapped a highlighted signature.

“Megan’s authorization appears here.”

I leaned closer.

The signature looked almost identical to mine.

Almost.

I signed my last name with a small upward curve beneath the final letter.

This one ended flat.

Tiny.

Almost impossible to notice.

Except I noticed immediately.

“That isn’t my signature.”

Jack swallowed.

“I never signed your name.”

Gerald looked up.

“Then who did?”

Jack hesitated.

Long enough to answer the question without speaking.

Seven Months of Lies

Jack finally sat down.

He suddenly looked much older than the confident surgeon I had married.

“Natalie wasn’t supposed to become part of my life.”

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because I had heard enough excuses for one day.

“You managed to hide her for seven months.”

He nodded.

“The trip was her idea.”
