Behind Closed Doors Moral Stories

“My 32-Year-Old Son Lost Control With Me 30 Times in Front of His Wife at His Birthday Dinner—She Never Once Tried to Stop Him, and When He Threw My Late Father’s 1960s Rolex Onto the Marble Floor and Ordered Me Out of His $14 Million Beverly Hills Mansion, I Picked Up the Watch and Left Without a Word… By 9:45 the Next Morning, While He Was Sitting in His Office, One Decision Had Already Been Made That He Never Imagined I Could Make”

Part 2 of 3

This was the first business decision I had ever made because of my son.

And the first one I had made without asking myself how it would affect him.

Camille Learned Who Owned the House

Northline took possession immediately.

Daniel had warned them that the occupants might be surprised, so their property representative arrived with documentation and an inventory specialist shortly after eleven.

I wasn’t there.

I didn’t need to be.

I learned what happened because Camille called me at 11:26.

I watched her name flash across my phone.

I let it ring.

She called again.

Then again.

On the fourth call, I answered.

“What?”

Her voice was high and breathless.

“There are people in our house.”

“Yes.”

“They say the house was sold.”

“It was.”

Silence.

Then:

“What did you do?”

“I sold a company asset.”

“You sold our home?”

“I sold my company’s property.”

“That’s Derek’s house.”

“No.”

I could hear voices behind her.

“They’re telling me the furniture stays.”

“Most of it belongs to Westbridge.”

“They can’t do that.”

“They have an inventory.”

Her breathing changed.

“Where are we supposed to go?”

It was the first question she had asked me in years that didn’t involve a reservation, a check, a vehicle, a vacation property, or a favor.

“I don’t know.”

“Leonard.”

“Call your husband.”

I ended the call.

Derek called six minutes later.

I had expected anger.

I hadn’t expected him to begin exactly where the previous night ended.

“You think you’re funny?”

“No.”

“You sold my house?”

“It wasn’t yours.”

“Don’t play games with me.”

“I’m not.”

“I swear to God, if you’re doing this because of last night—”

He stopped.

I waited.

Then he said it.

“Maybe thirty wasn’t enough.”

I put my coffee down.

“Careful.”

“You can’t sell somebody else’s property.”

“Correct.”

“Then undo it.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because the sale is closed.”

There was a long silence.

“What are you talking about?”

“Westbridge Development owned the house. Westbridge sold it this morning.”

“You gave me that house.”

“No, Derek. I let you live there.”

“For six years.”

“Yes.”

“I remodeled it.”

“Westbridge paid the invoices.”

He started breathing heavily into the phone.

“Dad, stop. Just stop. Call whoever bought it.”

“No.”

“I’ll pay you back.”

That almost made me laugh, but I didn’t.

“With what?”

He didn’t answer.

Then his voice softened so abruptly that I barely recognized it.

“Dad, come on.”

I picked up the Rolex and ran my thumb across the scratched crystal.

“You had thirty chances to stop last night.”

“I was angry.”

“I know.”

“You embarrassed me.”

“I answered a question.”

“In front of everyone.”

“And then you made thirty decisions.”

“Dad—”

“The house is sold.”

He began saying my name again.

I ended the call.

For several minutes, I sat at the table holding my father’s watch.

The second hand kept moving.

The Signature Derek Had Forgotten

Derek hired an attorney three days later.

Daniel called me when the demand letter arrived.

Derek’s argument was simple. He claimed the Beverly Hills house had been given to him as a wedding gift and that my company had merely kept the title for administrative reasons.

“Is there any chance that works?” I asked.

Daniel laughed once.

“Do you remember what Derek signed before he moved in?”

I did after he reminded me.

Six years earlier, our insurance company had required an occupancy agreement because Derek and Camille were living in a corporate-owned residence.

I had considered it routine paperwork.

Apparently, Derek had too.

Daniel emailed me the document.

There was my son’s signature at the bottom of page four, confirming that he and Camille occupied the property by permission of Westbridge Development and acquired no ownership interest through their residence there.

I stared at it for a while.

Derek had signed his name beneath the truth and then spent six years pretending the truth didn’t exist.

Westbridge had also paid the property taxes, insurance, major repairs, landscaping contract, and structural work.

The claim disappeared quickly after Daniel sent the records.

Derek called me that night.

“You made me sign that.”

“You were twenty-six.”

“I didn’t read it.”

“That isn’t the same thing.”

“You knew I thought the house was mine.”

I leaned against my desk.

That accusation bothered me because part of it was true.

I had known.
