Part 2 of 3

When the boys finally went down for their naps, Emma poured two cups of coffee.

“They like you,” she admitted.

“I like them.”

“That’s the easy part.”

He looked toward their bedroom.

“I know.”

Emma hesitated before speaking again.

“There’s something else.”

She disappeared into her bedroom and returned with an old metal box.

Inside were two hospital bracelets, a faded photograph, and an envelope bearing the logo of Lakeshore Women’s Hospital.

Across the envelope, someone had written:

Do not let Nathan see this.

Beneath the warning were two initials.

D.M.

Nathan stared.

“Daniel Mercer?”

Emma nodded.

“I found it after you came back into our lives. I never understood why he left it with my hospital paperwork.”

She handed him another document.

It listed the twins’ delivery date as October 14.

Their birth certificates said October 21.

“That’s impossible,” Nathan said.

“I know when I went into labor. But this is an original hospital form, and someone changed it.”

He studied the paper.

“Have you contacted the hospital?”

“I’ve requested the complete records. There’s a three-week wait.”

Nathan reached for his phone.

“I can get someone—”

“No.”

He stopped.

“We do this properly,” Emma said. “No private investigators digging through medical files. No lawyers threatening people before we know what happened.”

Nathan slowly put the phone away.

“Together, then.”

Emma looked at him for a long moment.

“Together.”

That evening, after he left, she called Daniel Mercer herself.

He answered on the fifth ring.

“Emma?”

“Why did you leave an envelope in my hospital records?”

Daniel went quiet.

“Where did you find it?”

“Under my bed. Why does it say Nathan shouldn’t see it?”

His answer came slowly.

“Because I was afraid he’d confront the wrong person before we had proof.”

Emma gripped the phone.

“Proof of what?”

“Someone interfered with the hospital paperwork.”

“Who?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Emma, I need you to understand that I didn’t know everything at the time.”

“Then tell me what you did know.”

His next words made her sit down.

“Eleanor Harrison knew you were pregnant. And she told me not to tell Nathan.”

PART 2 — THE PRICE OF HIS EMPIRE

THE WOMAN WHO CONTROLLED THE TRUTH

“You’re telling me Nathan’s mother knew about my babies before he did?”

Emma could barely keep her voice steady.

Daniel sighed.

“Eleanor said Nathan couldn’t afford another distraction. His company was negotiating a merger, and she believed the pregnancy would bring him back to a marriage that was already over.”

“So you listened to her?”

“I thought Nathan had authorized her to handle it.”

“You worked for him for twelve years, Daniel. You couldn’t ask?”

He had no good answer.

Emma stared at the two small hospital bracelets on the table.

“Why is the birth date different?”

“I don’t know who physically changed the records. But I know Eleanor visited the hospital.”

“Why?”

“She wanted the paperwork to show that Nathan had been identified as the father without requiring anyone to contact him.”

Emma felt sick.

“She wanted him to look like he’d been told.”

“That’s what I eventually suspected.”

“And you kept quiet for four years?”

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“I was afraid of losing everything I’d worked for.”

Emma closed her eyes.

“You protected your job. My sons lost their father.”

She ended the call.

The following morning, she told Nathan everything.

He listened without interrupting, though his face grew increasingly pale.

“I want to speak to Daniel,” he said.

“You will. But first, I’m meeting the doctor who kept the original records.”

Daniel had given Emma the name of Dr. Helen Whitcomb, a retired neonatologist who had treated the twins.

Nathan offered to drive her.

Emma considered refusing, then handed him the address.

“You’re coming as their father, Nathan. Not as Harrison Development’s CEO.”

“Understood.”

They drove to Evanston in silence.

Dr. Whitcomb lived in a modest brick house near the lake. She welcomed them into a sitting room lined with books and old family photographs.

Daniel was already there.

Nathan stopped in the doorway.

“You knew?”

Daniel stood.

“Nathan, I can explain.”

“You knew Emma was pregnant, and you let me believe she wanted nothing to do with me?”

“Your mother told me—”

“Don’t hide behind my mother. You could’ve called me.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Dr. Whitcomb interrupted gently.

“Mr. Harrison, I think you should see these first.”

She placed a folder on the coffee table.

Inside were copies of the original neonatal intake records, a photograph of two tiny babies, and a visitor log dated October 14.

The records identified Emma as the mother and Nathan as the father.

But the later documents showed a different delivery date.

“Why was it changed?” Emma asked.

“I never received a satisfactory explanation,” the doctor replied. “The hospital administrator said the family had requested a correction. I questioned it because the medical notes clearly documented the original date.”

Nathan examined the visitor log.

At the bottom was a signature.

Eleanor Harrison.

Beside it were the words Authorized by family.

“She came here?” Nathan whispered.

Dr. Whitcomb nodded.

“She said you were overseas and had authorized her to handle communication with the hospital.”

Emma leaned forward.

“Were my babies ever in danger?”

“Their medical care was not interrupted. They were both very small, and they needed close monitoring, but I have no evidence that anyone deliberately compromised their treatment.”

Emma exhaled.

For four years, she had worried that something about their difficult birth remained unexplained.

Now she knew the records had been altered, but the boys’ care had not been the target.

Their father’s knowledge had been.

Daniel finally spoke.

“I discovered the discrepancy afterward. I tried asking questions, but Eleanor told me to leave it alone. I should’ve told both of you.”

Nathan looked at him.

“Yes. You should have.”

“I was afraid she’d ruin my career.”

“And you thought that was worse than what you were doing to my family?”

Daniel said nothing.

Emma gathered the documents.

“I want written statements from both of you. Whatever happened, the boys deserve accurate records.”

Dr. Whitcomb nodded.

“I’ll cooperate with the hospital’s records department.”

Daniel agreed as well.

Nathan reached for Emma’s hand, then stopped.

She noticed.

For once, he was letting her decide.

THE DEAL HE WALKED AWAY FROM

Nathan’s mother was waiting in the sitting room of her lakefront mansion when they arrived that afternoon.

Eleanor Harrison wore a pale blue sweater and pearls. A silver tea service rested on the table.

She smiled at Nathan.

“Darling, I thought you were in New York for the waterfront signing.”

“I canceled it.”

Her smile vanished.

“You did what?”

“We need to talk about Emma.”

Eleanor noticed his ex-wife standing behind him.

“Oh, for heaven’s sake. Are we still doing this? Your marriage ended years ago.”

Emma remained silent.

Nathan placed the hospital visitor log on the table.

“You knew she was pregnant.”

Eleanor glanced at the paper.

“Nathan, I don’t know what she’s been telling you—”

“You signed into the hospital on October fourteenth.”

His mother stopped speaking.

“You told the staff I’d authorized you to handle everything,” he continued. “You told Daniel not to pass along her calls.”

Eleanor set down her teacup.

“I was protecting you.”

“From my own children?”

“From making a terrible mistake!”

Her voice rose.

“You were finally becoming the man your father always wanted you to be. That merger was going to change everything. Emma had already dragged you through months of arguments, and suddenly there was a pregnancy?”

Emma stepped forward.

“Two babies, Eleanor. Two little boys.”

“I know that now.”

“You knew then.”
