I also requested a complete review of the financial records connected to my property company.
What my attorney discovered over the next two days was far more troubling than Trevor’s betrayal.
The Signature I Had Never Written
My attorney, Cynthia Bellamy, arrived at my temporary residence carrying a folder of documents.
“Valerie, someone attempted to transfer ownership of your property company.”
I frowned.
“Transfer it to whom?”
“A company connected to Trevor and Brittany.”
She showed me an authorization form.
My name appeared at the bottom.
So did a signature that resembled mine.
But I had never signed it.
“This isn’t my signature.”
Cynthia nodded.
“We suspected that. The document also claims you signed it in Connecticut on a day when military records place you elsewhere.”
Further examination revealed communications and payments associated with the attempted transaction.
Trevor and Brittany appeared to have been preparing to take control of the house without my permission.
I had spent my savings protecting his parents.
Now he was trying to take the property for himself and the woman he’d chosen over me.
Cynthia had already contacted the appropriate authorities.
“What happens now?” I asked.
“The investigators will follow the evidence. Your company remains the legal owner, and we’ll take the necessary steps to protect it.”
I looked toward the nursery.
Wyatt and Emma were sleeping peacefully.
“Then let’s make sure nobody can take what belongs to them.”
The Afternoon Everything Changed
Three days after Trevor brought the divorce papers to the hospital, his parents were hosting another gathering.
Brittany was there, smiling beside Trevor.
Frederick and Patricia were preparing to thank her once again.
Then several vehicles arrived outside.
A military transport vehicle stopped near the driveway, followed by cars carrying colleagues from my command.
Investigators arrived separately to carry out their authorized work concerning the property records.
I stepped out wearing my Army service uniform.
My attorney walked beside me.
A senior officer approached and saluted.
“Good afternoon, Colonel Winslow.”
I returned the salute.
Behind him, several uniformed colleagues greeted me respectfully.
Trevor stood motionless on the porch.
“Colonel?” he whispered.
Patricia stared at my uniform.
“Valerie, what’s going on?”
I looked at them calmly.
“There are a few things this family needs to understand.”
An investigator approached with a folder.
“Mr. and Mrs. Winslow, we’ve reviewed the ownership records for this property.”
Frederick looked confused.
“Brittany already handled everything with the bank.”
The investigator opened the folder.
“Actually, the property was purchased through Northfield Property Holdings. Colonel Valerie Winslow is the company’s owner.”
Patricia covered her mouth.
Trevor looked toward Brittany.
Her smile disappeared.
“That’s impossible,” he said.
I met his eyes.
“No, Trevor. It’s simply something you never bothered to find out.”
The Truth Behind Brittany’s Story
Frederick slowly sat on the porch steps.
“Valerie, you bought our house?”
“Yes.”
“With your own money?”
“Every dollar.”
His eyes filled with tears.
Patricia turned toward Brittany.
“You told us you’d used your inheritance.”
Brittany looked away.
The investigator continued.
“We also have evidence suggesting an unauthorized attempt to transfer ownership of the property.”
Trevor’s face tightened.
“What are you accusing us of?”
“We’re investigating documents submitted using Colonel Winslow’s signature without her authorization.”
Brittany suddenly looked at Trevor.
“You told me the paperwork was already arranged!”
Trevor turned sharply.
“Brittany, stop talking.”
But she was visibly upset.
“You said Valerie would never find out! You said the house would eventually belong to us!”
Frederick rose from the steps.
“You were planning to take our home?”
Trevor shook his head.
“Dad, I was trying to protect the family’s future.”
His father stared at him.
“By taking the house from the woman who saved it?”
For once, Trevor had no convincing answer.
The investigator explained that the matter would proceed through the appropriate legal process.
The military personnel accompanying me had no role in the civilian investigation.
Their presence was connected to my official transportation arrangements and colleagues who had come to support me.
Still, seeing me surrounded by people who respected my work seemed to unsettle Trevor more than anything else.
“How long have you been a colonel?” he finally asked.
“Longer than we’ve been married.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
I looked at him sadly.
“I tried to tell you about my life many times, Trevor. You just never wanted to listen.”
The Choice They Never Expected
As the investigators continued their work, Patricia approached me.
“Valerie, I’m so sorry. We didn’t know.”
I looked at her.
“You knew I was having your grandchildren. Trevor knew I was in labor, and nobody came.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“We thought you were working.”
“You believed whatever Trevor told you because it was easier than asking me.”
She lowered her head.
