Happy Soul Moral Stories

I Was Twelve Minutes Late to My Husband’s 55th Birthday Dinner, a Party I’d Spent Nearly $15,000 Putting Together. Just as I Reached the Door, I Heard Him Say, “That Pig? I Wish She Wouldn’t Show Up.” His Friends Burst Out Laughing, and Even His Mother Joined In. After 22 Years of Marriage, I Never Imagined He Could Speak About Me That Way. I Almost Walked Away, but Then I Heard Him Mention the Money He Was Waiting to Take From Me. I Quietly Called My Attorney and Said, “Do It.” Twenty Minutes Later, My Husband Was Staring at Me Across the Table, His Face Drained of Color…

Part 2 of 3

“To Rose!” Mike announced.

I lifted my waterglass.

The irony wasn’t lost on me.

Thomas had spent the evening mocking me for being the person who kept his life running, then praised me for exactly that in front of the same people.

A few minutes later, the general manager brought the bill.

Thomas took my Platinum card from his jacket and handed it over with a flourish.

“There you go.”

The manager returned several minutes later.

He leaned toward Thomas and spoke quietly.

“I’m sorry, sir. This card isn’t authorized for use. Do you have another form of payment?”

Thomas frowned.

“That’s impossible. Try it again.”

“We already have, sir.”

Thomas turned toward me.

“Rose, what’s going on?”

I folded my napkin.

“I removed your authorized-user privileges.”

His face went pale.

“You did what?”

“You wanted to pay for your birthday dinner, Thomas. I thought you should use your own card.”

Mike stopped talking.

Brenda leaned forward.

“Rose, don’t start something embarrassing.”

Thomas lowered his voice.

“Fix this. Now.”

I reached into my handbag and placed the blue folder beside his plate.

“There’s something else we need to discuss.”

He looked at the folder.

Then he looked at me.

For the first time in twenty-two years, Thomas seemed genuinely unsure what I might say next.

PART 2: THE PEOPLE WHO STOPPED LAUGHING

Thomas opened the blue folder and saw the copy of the apartment lease.

He immediately closed it.

“Where did you get this?”

“I know about Jessica. I know about Asheville. And I know what happened to the twelve thousand dollars.”

His eyes moved toward David.

“Rose, not here.”

“You were comfortable discussing our marriage here twenty minutes before I arrived.”

The room went silent.

Brenda’s expression tightened.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

I looked directly at her.

“I heard Thomas call me a pig. I heard everyone laughing. I heard him explain that he was waiting for my bonus before leaving me.”

Mike shifted in his chair.

Thomas gave a strained laugh.

“Come on, Rose. It was a joke. You know how guys talk after a few drinks.”

“You were talking about your wife.”

“You’re taking it out of context.”

“Then explain the context.”

He opened his mouth, but nothing came out.

David set down his wineglass.

“Thomas, I think you’ve said enough.”

Thomas turned sharply.

“David, this is between my wife and me.”

“Then you shouldn’t have involved the rest of us.”

The words landed harder than anything I could have said.

Thomas looked around the table, searching for support.

Mike stared at his plate.

Brenda tried again.

“Rose, surely you don’t want to throw away twenty-two years over a foolish remark.”

I looked at her.

“I’m not ending my marriage over a remark, Brenda. Your son has been seeing another woman for months. He used our savings to rent her an apartment, and he planned to leave after my bonus arrived.”

She blinked.

“Thomas?”

He looked away.

I stood and picked up my handbag.

“I’ve hired an attorney. My financial records are preserved, and we’ll handle the property settlement properly. I’m not discussing it at this table.”

Thomas grabbed the folder.

“You can’t just decide everything without me.”

“I’m not deciding the settlement without you. I’m deciding that I’m finished being your wife.”

The manager was still standing near the door, looking uncomfortable.

I turned toward him.

“I’m sorry this happened during your service. I arranged the dinner, and I’ll settle the balance I’m responsible for privately. Could we speak in your office?”

He nodded.

Thomas stared at me.

“You’re seriously going to leave me sitting here?”

I looked at the people around the table.

“You told them you wished I wouldn’t show up. I’m giving you what you wanted.”

I picked up the blue folder.

Then I walked out.

THE MAN WHO CAME BACK

Thomas didn’t come home that night.

He stayed at the apartment he’d rented for Jessica.

The following morning, I settled the restaurant charges under my reservation agreement. The final amount was painful, but I had agreed to host the event, and I wasn’t going to leave the staff or the restaurant dealing with my marriage.

On Monday, Thomas called seven times.

When I finally answered, he sounded furious.

“You humiliated me in front of my boss.”

I was sitting at the kitchen island with a cup of coffee.

“You did that yourself.”

“David barely spoke to me afterward. Mike says you made everybody uncomfortable.”

“I’m sure they were uncomfortable.”

He paused.

“Look, I know you’re upset. But twenty-two years should count for something.”

I stared at the wedding photograph on the wall.

“They counted for a great deal to me.”

“Then stop acting like this is the end of the world. I made a mistake.”

“You made a series of choices, Thomas. For months.”

He sighed.

“Jessica and I weren’t even sure things would work out. I was confused.”

“You weren’t confused about waiting for my bonus.”

He went quiet.

Then his voice changed.

“That bonus is marital property, Rose. You can’t just hide it from me.”

“I’m not hiding it. My attorney knows exactly where it is, and it’ll be accounted for properly.”

“So you’ve already got a lawyer?”

“Yes.”

“Before my birthday?”

“Yes.”

He gave a bitter laugh.

“You planned that whole thing to make me look like a fool.”

I looked down at my coffee.

“I planned a birthday dinner for my husband. Then I found out what he was doing behind my back.”

He didn’t answer.

“Thomas, you can speak with Sarah from now on.”

I ended the call.

Three days later, he came to the house.

I had agreed to let him collect some personal belongings, and Sarah had advised me to keep the visit brief and civil.

He arrived carrying an overnight bag.

For several minutes, he walked around the living room looking at photographs and furniture.

“I can’t believe you’re doing this,” he said.

I stood beside the fireplace.

“I’m not going to argue with you.”

He picked up a framed picture from our twentieth anniversary.

“Remember this trip? Charleston? You said it was the happiest weekend we’d had in years.”

I remembered.

We’d walked along the waterfront, eaten dinner at a little restaurant, and talked about traveling more when we retired.

For a moment, I felt the familiar pull of that memory.

“I remember.”

He set the photograph down.

“We could have that again.”

I looked at him.

“Have you ended things with Jessica?”

He hesitated.

“It’s complicated.”

That hesitation told me everything.

“Then there’s nothing to discuss.”

His expression hardened.

“You always have to be right, don’t you? You can’t just let something go.”

I looked toward the blue folder on the kitchen counter.

“I let things go for years, Thomas. That’s how we got here.”

He picked up his bag.
