Corinne approached them before I could.

“He’s trying to turn our daughter against me because he wants custody.”

One officer listened to her while another spoke privately with me.

I gave him the same account I had given over the phone.

No guesses.

No theories.

Only what I had personally seen.

Maisie was then taken to the hospital.

I went with her.

Three Words From the Doctor

The ride felt endless.

Maisie was bundled beneath blankets, but she remained unusually quiet.

Every few minutes, I looked at her face.

She looked exhausted.

At the hospital, doctors examined her carefully and ordered imaging because of the pain in her side.

I stood beside her bed trying to look calm.

Inside, I was anything but calm.

Eventually, a doctor named Dr. Nolan Pierce entered the room.

He pulled a chair closer.

That alone made me nervous.

“Mr. Mercer, the imaging shows injuries involving three ribs.”

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

“Three?”

He nodded.

I looked at Maisie.

She had fallen asleep beneath the blankets.

Suddenly, memories from the previous several months started returning.

The bruise on her arm that had supposedly come from running into a table.

The afternoon she had refused to change clothes in front of us before swimming.

The mornings when she became unusually quiet whenever Corinne was irritated.

The explanations I had accepted because accepting them had been easier than confronting what they might mean.

I sat beside the bed and covered my face with my hands.

I had known something was wrong inside our home.

I simply hadn’t understood how wrong.

And that realization hurt.

The Question I Couldn’t Stop Asking

I kept thinking about what might have happened if I had arrived home later.

What if I had stopped for groceries?

What if traffic had delayed me another forty minutes?

What if I had stayed at work to finish one more email?

I hated those questions because none of them had answers.

All I knew was that I had walked through the door when my daughter needed me.

The divorce papers had seemed like the biggest decision of my life when I signed them earlier that afternoon.

Now they seemed almost insignificant.

This wasn’t about whether Corinne and I could repair our marriage anymore.

It was about making sure Maisie felt safe.

I looked at my sleeping daughter and made myself a promise.

Whatever happened next, I would listen to her.

I would stop dismissing the small signs because the larger truth was uncomfortable.

And I would let professionals determine what had actually happened instead of turning everything into another argument between two adults.

That was when one of the officers from our house entered the hospital room.

He was holding his phone.

Something about his expression made me stand immediately.

“Mr. Mercer?”

“Yes?”

He glanced toward Maisie before speaking.

“One of your neighbors contacted us after noticing the emergency vehicles at your house.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why?”

The officer looked at his phone.

“He has an exterior security camera.”

I stared at him.

“What does that have to do with us?”

“Part of your backyard is visible from the camera.”

Suddenly, the room felt very quiet.

The Camera Across the Fence

The neighbor lived two houses behind us.

According to the officer, his security system captured part of our property from a distance.

The angle wasn’t perfect.

It wasn’t designed to monitor our house.

But the camera had been running long before I arrived home.

The officer held his phone.

“Your neighbor preserved the recording and sent us a copy.”

I felt my hands go cold.

“What does it show?”

He hesitated.

That hesitation frightened me more than an immediate answer would have.

“We’re reviewing it carefully.”

“Did it record what happened to Maisie?”

“It recorded part of the backyard before you arrived.”

Before I arrived.

Those words changed everything.

Until that moment, there were competing explanations.

I had described what I saw when I came home.

Corinne had said Maisie fell.

She had also claimed that my decision to end our marriage was affecting how I interpreted everything.

But the camera didn’t know we were getting divorced.

The camera didn’t know anyone would need its footage.

It had simply been recording.

And sometimes the most important witness isn’t a person at all.

What the Recording Could Answer

The officer showed me a small portion of the footage.

It wasn’t like something from a television drama.

There was no perfect close-up.

No clear audio.

No dramatic camera movement.

It was simply a fixed outdoor view showing part of the yard.

But it had one enormous advantage.

It had started recording before anyone knew questions would be asked.

“Can you tell what happened?” I asked.

The officer shook his head slightly.

“I don’t want to give you an answer before the footage has been properly reviewed.”
