Part 1 of 3

The Trip I Wasn’t Supposed to Come Home From Early

I was supposed to be in Minneapolis until Thursday evening.

Instead, at 2:40 on Wednesday afternoon, I was standing inside my house in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, staring at a baby bottle on my kitchen counter.

My name is Maren Holloway. I was thirty-six years old, had been married to my husband, Dean, for almost nine years, and I knew one thing with absolute certainty.

We did not have a baby.

Yet there it was.

A half-full bottle sat beside our coffee maker. A small white cloth was draped over the back of a chair, and a package of diapers was tucked beside the pantry.

For several seconds, I simply stood there with my suitcase still in my hand.

Then I heard something upstairs.

A baby crying.

My heart began pounding.

I left my suitcase by the front door and climbed the stairs.

The sound was coming from our bedroom.

When I reached the doorway, I stopped.

Dean was sitting in the armchair beside our bed, holding a tiny baby boy against his chest.

He looked exhausted.

There were dark circles beneath his eyes, his shirt was wrinkled, and a small blue blanket covered the child in his arms.

Dean looked up.

His face lost all color.

“Maren?”

I stared at him.

“Whose baby is that?”

He didn’t answer.

That silence told me more than any explanation could have.

“Dean, whose baby is that?”

He slowly stood.

“You weren’t supposed to be home until tomorrow.”

I almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny, but because I couldn’t believe those were the first words he chose.

“Apparently, that’s the problem.”

The Explanation That Made Everything Worse

Dean asked me to sit down.

I refused.

The baby had stopped crying and was sleeping peacefully against his shoulder, completely unaware that my marriage seemed to be collapsing around him.

“His name is Milo,” Dean said.

“I didn’t ask his name.”

My voice shook.

“I asked who his parents are.”

Dean looked toward the hallway.

Then he said something I wasn’t expecting.

“His mother’s name was Taryn.”

Was.

That single word changed the room.

I stared at him.

“Was?”

Dean lowered his voice.

“She passed away several weeks ago.”

I felt sympathy for exactly one second before another thought struck me.

Why was my husband caring for her child?

“How did you know her?”

Dean rubbed his forehead.

“It’s complicated.”

“That’s what people say when the simple answer would destroy them.”

He closed his eyes.

I asked the question I was terrified to ask.

“Is Milo your son?”

Dean looked directly at me.

“No.”

I wanted to believe him.

But there was a crib beside our bed.

Baby clothes were folded on my dresser.

Formula was sitting on the nightstand.

This wasn’t something that had happened that morning.

Someone had been caring for Milo in my house for days.

Maybe longer.

“How long has he been here?”

“Six days.”

I stared at him.

Six days.

I had left for Minneapolis three days earlier.

That meant Dean had brought the baby into our home before my trip and somehow kept him hidden from me.

“You lied to me while I was standing in this house.”

“I was trying to find the right way to tell you.”

“You had six days.”

Then Dean said something that made even less sense.

“I wasn’t the only one who knew.”

I felt cold.

“Who else knew?”

He hesitated.

“Your parents.”

My Parents Already Knew

I called my mother immediately.

Her name was Colleen Mercer.

She answered on the second ring.

“Honey, aren’t you in Minneapolis?”

I looked at Dean.

“I’m standing in my bedroom with a baby I’ve never seen before.”

Silence.

Not surprise.

Not confusion.

Silence.

That was when I knew Dean had told the truth about one thing.

My mother knew.

“Mom, who is Taryn?”

I heard her inhale.

Then my father took the phone.

“Maren, come over. We need to talk.”

“No. You’re going to talk now.”

My father remained quiet.

I had never heard him sound uncertain before.

Finally, Mom returned to the phone.

“Please come here.”

An hour later, Dean and I drove to my parents’ house with Milo sleeping in his car seat.
