Hollywood star Gary Oldman reveals the savage remark Prince William made to him as he received his knighthood

Part 2 of 2

An Emotional Honor

After receiving the title of knight bachelor, Oldman described the moment as overwhelming.

“We spoke for a minute, but I almost couldn’t find my voice,” he admitted. “I feel very honored, very humbled and flattered, I think in equal measure. It compares to nothing else. It’s a singular event, that is what it is. I thought the Oscar was a big deal. No disrespect to the academy, but it sort of pales in comparison to this. It’s just been wonderful.”

William also praised Oldman’s body of work, referencing films such as The Fifth Element and Darkest Hour. “He said he was very happy that I was here today and that it was him that had the opportunity to present me with [the honor],” Oldman recalled.

A Storied Career

Oldman began his career with the Royal Shakespeare Company before making his film debut in the 1982 drama Remembrance. His career quickly flourished, with standout roles in Dracula, the Harry Potter series, Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, and Darkest Hour, which won him the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Now considered one of Hollywood’s highest-grossing actors, he has also earned a Golden Globe, three BAFTAs, and three Primetime Emmy nominations.

The Future of “Slow Horses”

While at Windsor Castle, fans and attendees were curious about whether Oldman would reprise his role in another season of Slow Horses.

Calling it “truly one of the most enjoyable jobs I’ve had in 47 years doing this,” Oldman praised the complexity of his character. “He has an acid wit, sarcastic, he drinks too much, smokes too much, eats all the wrong things,” he said with a grin. “Who wouldn’t want to play that?”
