“Give Birth Wherever You Want—I’m Not the Father,” Said the Surgeon I Had Lived With for Three Years, Leaving an Envelope of Money on the Table. I Didn’t Argue or Beg; I Simply Packed My Things and Walked Away Pregnant. Three Months Later, Just Before He Entered the Operating Room, He Was Handed Two Images. The Moment He Placed Them Side by Side, the Scalpel Slipped From His Hand

Part 2 of 3

But suddenly, our daughter wasn’t an abstract idea anymore.

She looked like him.

And for the first time, Callum couldn’t pretend otherwise.

Mina noticed his hands weren’t steady.

She immediately told him to step away from the scheduled procedure.

Callum didn’t argue.

Another qualified surgeon took his place.

The Knock at My Door

Three evenings later, someone knocked on my apartment door.

I was washing dishes.

Wren was sitting on the couch sorting baby shower invitations.

When I opened the door, Callum stood in the hallway.

He looked different.

Not physically.

Something in his expression had changed.

“Can I come in?”

“Why?”

He swallowed.

“Because I need to talk to you.”

“You had months.”

“I know.”

I almost closed the door.

Then he said something I wasn’t expecting.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”

That stopped me.

He looked toward my stomach, then immediately back at my face.

“I saw the photograph.”

“That’s why I sent it.”

“I couldn’t operate that morning.”

My expression hardened.

“Don’t put that on me.”

“I’m not.”

He shook his head.

“That’s exactly what I’m trying not to do anymore.”

For the first time since he’d left, Callum wasn’t defending himself.

He wasn’t explaining why his career mattered.

He wasn’t talking about timing.

He simply said:

“I was wrong.”

The Choice He Finally Made

Callum told me about Dr. Stroud’s fellowship.

He had withdrawn from consideration.

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because I realized I’d spent my entire life building something I thought would make me important.”

He paused.

“Then I looked at that picture and understood I’d abandoned the one person who might someday care about me without knowing anything about my title.”

I wanted those words to fix everything.

They didn’t.

“Walking away from a fellowship doesn’t make you a father.”

“I know.”

“Showing up here doesn’t make you one either.”

“I know that too.”

His answer irritated me because there was nothing to argue against.

Callum reached into his coat.

For one terrible second, I thought he had brought another envelope of money.

Instead, he handed me a folded sheet of paper.

It was a list.

Parenting classes.

A counseling appointment.

A proposed financial plan for the baby.

And at the bottom, the name of an attorney.

“I spoke to a family attorney this morning,” he said. “Not to protect myself from responsibility. To understand exactly what responsibility looks like.”

I looked up.

“Why should I trust you?”

“You shouldn’t.”

His voice was quiet.

“Not yet.”

He Had to Start at the Beginning

I didn’t take Callum back.

That surprised him.

Maybe part of him had imagined that admitting his mistake would erase it.

It didn’t.

I allowed him to attend one prenatal appointment.

Then another.

He never touched me unless I invited him to.

He never referred to the baby as “ours” when speaking to me.

Instead, he asked questions.

He learned.

He showed up.

When he couldn’t attend an appointment because of work, he told me days in advance instead of expecting me to adjust.

One evening, as we left the clinic, he stopped beside my car.

“Have you chosen her name?”

I hesitated.

“Maren.”

He smiled faintly.

“Maren.”

He repeated it carefully, almost reverently.

Then he looked at me.

“Thank you for telling me.”

That tiny moment affected me more than his grand apology.

Because for the first time, he wasn’t demanding a place in our daughter’s life.

He was grateful to be allowed near it.

The Day Maren Arrived

Maren arrived on a cold February morning while snow covered the sidewalks outside the hospital.

Wren stayed with me.

Callum waited nearby because I had told him that was what I wanted.

Hours later, when I was ready, I let him into the room.

He entered quietly.

Maren was asleep against my chest.

Callum stopped several feet from the bed.

He didn’t approach until I nodded.

When he finally saw her face, his eyes filled.

“She has your mouth,” he whispered.

I almost laughed.

“And apparently everything else belongs to you.”

He smiled through tears.
