“Against my house?”

He smiled.

“Our home, sweetheart. We’re married. Everything we do is for our future.”

Marjorie, who had been listening from the breakfast nook, immediately joined the conversation.

“A supportive wife doesn’t stand in the way of her husband’s opportunities.”

I looked at the papers.

“I’ll need time to review everything.”

Travis’s smile tightened.

“You don’t trust me?”

“I want to understand a financial commitment before signing it.”

Marjorie shook her head.

“After eleven years, you shouldn’t need to question your own husband.”

I gathered the papers into a neat stack.

“Then another few days shouldn’t be a problem.”

Neither of them looked pleased.

The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

Three days later, I received a call from a loan officer at a local bank.

She explained that a preliminary application involving my property had been submitted and that the bank needed to verify my authorization before proceeding.

I asked her to stop processing the application until I could review it in person.

The following morning, I sat across from her in a private office.

Among the documents was a page bearing my printed name and a handwritten signature.

It looked remarkably similar to mine.

But I knew immediately that I hadn’t signed it.

“This isn’t my signature,” I said.

The loan officer looked concerned.

“You’re certain?”

“Absolutely. I haven’t authorized any loan or credit line against this property.”

She explained that no loan had been finalized and no lien had been recorded.

I submitted a written statement disputing the signature and requesting that the application not proceed under my name.

Then I contacted Meredith, who began the appropriate review.

I didn’t know who had placed that signature on the page.

But someone had tried to make a financial decision for me without my permission.

When I returned home, Travis was washing dishes.

“How was your day?” he asked.

“Interesting,” I replied.

He glanced over his shoulder.

“Everything okay?”

“I’m starting to understand a few things.”

For a moment, his expression changed.

Then he turned back toward the sink.

The Medical Report Hidden for Six Years

While gathering documents for Meredith, I searched a shared filing cabinet in our home office.

Behind old insurance papers, I discovered an envelope from a fertility clinic.

It was addressed to Travis.

The date was six years earlier.

Inside were the results of a medical evaluation he had apparently completed without telling me.

The report showed several measurements below the expected reference range and recommended further assessment.

It did not establish that Travis could never father a child.

But it showed that he had known there were questions about his own reproductive health.

For years, he had allowed his mother to suggest that our struggles were entirely my responsibility.

I sat on the office floor holding those papers.

The secrecy hurt almost as much as the affair.

He had watched me blame myself while keeping information that might have helped us face our difficulties together.

That evening, I confronted him.

I placed the report on the kitchen table.

“Why didn’t you tell me about this?”

Travis stared at it.

“Where did you find that?”

“In our filing cabinet. Why did you hide it?”

He lowered himself into a chair.

“I was embarrassed. The doctor said I needed more tests, and I couldn’t handle the thought that something might be wrong.”

“So you let me believe it was all my fault?”

He didn’t answer.

Marjorie entered the kitchen and noticed the papers.

“What is going on?”

I looked directly at her.

“Your son knew he needed medical follow-up. You spent years blaming me while he kept this hidden.”

She glanced at Travis.

“I didn’t know about that report.”

“But you knew about Paige and Hudson.”

Her face went pale.

Travis stood up.

“Laurel, please. Let me explain.”

“You can explain it to my attorney.”

That was the first time he realized I wasn’t going to pretend anymore.

The Truth About Hudson

I moved into the guest room temporarily while Meredith helped me work through the next steps.

Travis eventually moved out.

Marjorie went to stay with her daughter, Bethany, who lived in Matthews.

I told Bethany only what she needed to know. She had not been aware of the affair and was horrified by what had happened.

Two weeks later, she called me.

“Laurel, there’s something you should hear. Travis has started questioning whether Hudson is actually his son.”

I sat down.

“Why now?”

“Because of the old medical report and the dates. He says Paige told him she was expecting shortly after he returned from a long business trip.”

I reminded Bethany that an abnormal fertility report did not establish paternity.

“I know,” she answered. “That’s why he wants a DNA test.”

Paige initially resisted.

She reminded Travis that Hudson had called him Daddy for four years.

But eventually, they agreed to testing through a private laboratory using verified identification and properly collected samples.

The results arrived six business days later.

Travis was not Hudson’s biological father.

When Bethany told me, I expected to feel satisfaction.

Instead, I remembered that little boy on the phone, asking his daddy to come hold him because he wasn’t feeling well.

Hudson hadn’t created any of the lies.

He was simply a child who loved the man he believed was his father.

According to Bethany, Paige eventually admitted she had also been involved with a former boyfriend around the time Hudson was conceived.

She had been uncertain about paternity but never told Travis.

When Travis accepted the pregnancy without questions, she allowed him to believe what he wanted.

Marjorie was devastated.

For four years, she had treated Hudson as her grandson while making me feel unwelcome in my own family.

Now she had to face the fact that she had sacrificed her relationship with me to protect a story she hadn’t even verified.

But Hudson’s biology didn’t change what Travis had chosen to do.
