Part 2 of 3

I Left Without Arguing

I expected Ryan to follow me.

He didn’t.

That hurt more than I wanted to admit.

Hallie and Wyatt climbed into my SUV, and I drove to my parents’ home in Middleton.

Halfway there, Hallie spoke from the back seat.

“Mom, are you mad at Dad?”

I looked at her through the mirror.

“I’m disappointed in some choices he made.”

“Are we going home tomorrow?”

I swallowed.

“I don’t know yet.”

That was the truth.

I did not know whether my marriage was over.

But I knew I could not return until I understood what else Ryan had hidden.

The next morning, I called attorney Rebecca Sloan, a client who had become a friend after I redesigned her office.

I told her about the $6,500.

She asked me a question I had not considered.

“Natalie, do you have access to all your household financial records?”

I hesitated.

“Most of them.”

“Most isn’t all.”

She advised me to gather copies of everything I legally had access to: bank statements, mortgage records, tax documents, insurance policies, and property records.

By Sunday evening, my parents’ dining table was covered in folders.

And the $6,500 quickly became the smallest problem.

The Document I Never Signed

Our house had originally belonged to me.

My grandmother left me money for the down payment before Ryan and I married. When we purchased the property, both our names eventually appeared on the title because I believed marriage meant building together.

But while reviewing recent records, Rebecca found a document filed several months earlier.

According to that document, I had agreed to transfer a substantial portion of my interest in the property into a family holding company controlled by Patricia.

There was even a signature bearing my name.

I stared at it for a long time.

“I never signed this.”

Rebecca looked at me carefully.

“You’re certain?”

“Absolutely.”

The signature resembled mine.

But whoever had copied it made one small mistake.

For professional contracts, I always signed “Natalie E. Prescott.”

The document simply said “Natalie Prescott.”

Rebecca continued reviewing the paperwork.

Then she found something else.

A notary stamp.

The notary was a woman named Marlene Pierce.

I recognized the name immediately.

She had worked for Patricia’s longtime accountant.

Rebecca leaned back.

“We need to investigate this carefully.”

I felt cold.

Suddenly, Vanessa’s necklace seemed almost irrelevant.

The $60,000 Trail

Over the next two weeks, Rebecca and a forensic accountant reviewed every financial record we could legally obtain.

What they found was devastating.

Nearly $60,000 had moved through accounts connected to our household during the previous eighteen months.

Some transactions had been labeled as home expenses.

Others appeared as consulting fees.

Several had ultimately benefited Patricia and Vanessa.

One payment helped cover overdue rent on Vanessa’s boutique.

Another paid a luxury car balance.

There were also transfers I had never authorized.

Ryan had apparently been moving money in small enough amounts that I would not immediately notice.

When Rebecca showed me the spreadsheet, I felt embarrassed.

“How did I miss this?”

She shook her head.

“Because you were living your life, raising children, and running a business. Trusting your spouse is not the same as failing to pay attention.”

Then came the biggest surprise.

Marlene, the notary whose stamp appeared on the property document, contacted Rebecca herself.

She wanted to talk.

We met her in Rebecca’s office on a rainy Wednesday morning.

Marlene looked terrified.

She placed a folder on the conference table.

“Mrs. Prescott, I owe you an apology.”

She explained that Patricia had brought the property document to her already signed.

Patricia claimed I had signed it at home because I was too busy to come to the office.

Marlene had known she should not notarize a signature she had not personally witnessed.

But Patricia had been a longtime client.

So she did it.

Weeks later, Marlene became suspicious when Patricia asked whether old notary records could be “corrected.”

That request frightened her enough to keep copies of their emails.

Those emails changed everything.

Ryan Finally Called

Fourteen days after the anniversary dinner, Ryan called me repeatedly.

I finally answered.

“Natalie, we need to talk.”

“About the house?”

Silence.

Then:

“Who told you?”

That question confirmed more than any explanation could have.

“So you knew.”

“It isn’t what you think.”

“Then explain it.”

Ryan began telling me that his mother was trying to protect family assets.

He said Vanessa’s business had struggled.

He said Patricia intended to repay everything.

He said he had felt “caught in the middle.”

For eleven years, Ryan had used that phrase whenever his family treated me badly.

Caught in the middle.

But there had never been a middle.

There had been his mother and sister on one side, and me standing alone on the other.

“Did you know my signature was on that document?”

He paused.

“Mom said the paperwork was temporary.”

I closed my eyes.

“That wasn’t my question.”
