At My Best Friend’s Wedding, the Woman I Had Never Stopped Loving Walked In Carrying 15-Month-Old Twins With My Gray Eyes. “I Sent Nine Letters and Came to Your Home Twice,” She Told Me—but Someone Had Silenced Every Attempt to Reach Me. When My Mother Whispered, “I Was Protecting You,” Our Family Attorney Stepped Forward With a 28-Year-Old Envelope…

Part 2 of 3

“They don’t know you.”

The words carried no cruelty, only truth, which made them harder to bear.

Alexander rose slowly. “I want to arrange a paternity test.”

Katherine stiffened.

“You still doubt me?”

“No. I want unquestionable documentation before I confront the person responsible.”

“This is not one of your corporate investigations.”

“Someone deliberately separated me from my children.”

“They were not alone, Alexander. They had me, my sister, and people who cared for them.”

“But you had to manage everything without help.”

Katherine looked away. She had left her architectural firm during the later months of her pregnancy and supported herself by designing home renovations from a small apartment in Cambridge. She had returned the keys to the condominium Alexander had once purchased for her and refused every gift connected to him.

Alexander frowned. “Where did you send the keys?”

“I gave them to your mother.”

The room became very still.

“My mother came to see you?”

“Three days after I left. She said you wanted a clean separation and offered me one and a half million dollars to sign an agreement promising never to contact you again.”

Owen drew a sharp breath.

Alexander asked, “Did you sign it?”

“No.”

“Did she know you were expecting a child?”

Katherine glanced at the twins.

“I told her that day. I learned there were two a week later.”

Alexander’s face lost all expression.

“What did she say?”

“She questioned whether you were their father. Then she said having your children would never make me part of the Pierce family.”

The Pattern Behind the Silence

Alexander walked toward the fireplace, needing distance while years of memories rearranged themselves.

His mother, Eleanor Pierce, had never openly ordered him to leave Katherine. She had been subtler than that, offering doubts disguised as concern. She suggested Katherine appeared uncomfortable at formal events, claimed old friends distrusted her, and repeatedly warned that Alexander’s wealth attracted people who knew how to appear sincere.

At the time, those remarks had seemed protective. Now he remembered invitations Katherine never received, dinners she believed had been canceled, and acquaintances who became strangely distant after speaking with Eleanor.

Even the photographs from the clinic no longer looked accidental.

Alexander turned to Katherine.

“Who knew you were going there that afternoon?”

“I canceled lunch with your mother’s assistant and explained why. She knew I was accompanying my friend and her brother.”

Owen understood first.

“Someone told the photographer exactly where to wait.”

Alexander pulled out his phone and opened the settings for his private email account.

“Tell me the address you used.”

Katherine recited it. The address was correct.

“Every message came back undelivered,” she said.

Only three people had possessed the authority to change the account’s filters: Alexander’s technology director, the family attorney, and Eleanor.

His mother was at the wedding.

Alexander started toward the door, but Katherine stepped in front of him.

“You are not turning Lydia and Owen’s reception into a public confrontation.”

Lydia folded her arms. “Considering I invited you specifically because I suspected something was wrong, I’ll permit one exception.”

Owen looked at his new wife.

“You planned this?”

“I created an opportunity. What people chose to do with it was up to them.”

Alexander glanced at Katherine. “Will you stay long enough to hear her answer?”

“The children remain here.”

“Of course.”

Lydia sat beside the twins while Owen opened the library door. Alexander offered Katherine his hand, but she walked past it. He did not blame her. Trust could not be repaired by a gesture, especially after it had been neglected for two years.

They found Eleanor near the grand staircase, speaking with Wallace Brant, the Pierce family attorney. Eleanor was a silver-haired woman whose elegant posture rarely changed, even under pressure, but when she saw Katherine standing beside her son, the color faded from her face.

“Alexander,” she said. “I was wondering where you had gone.”

His voice was calm.

“Did you know Katherine was expecting my children when she left Boston?”

Eleanor looked around at the watching guests.

“This is neither the time nor the place.”

“Did you know?”

“She made a claim. I had no reason to accept it without proof.”

Katherine stepped forward. “You knew I was trying to reach him.”

Eleanor’s gaze cooled.
