Part 2 of 3

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Vanessa appeared.

Your father is furious. You need to fix this before everything gets worse.

Another followed.

Grant was going to destroy the family business anyway.

I showed Meredith.

She read the messages carefully.

“Don’t respond. Save everything.”

Then she revealed that the audit had uncovered nearly four million dollars in questionable payments over eighteen months.

One company receiving those payments was registered to Vanessa.

I felt sick.

My father hadn’t simply tried to control my inheritance.

He and his wife appeared to have been taking money from the business Grant had spent years building.

The Message My Husband Left Behind

Later that afternoon, Meredith returned with a tablet.

“Grant recorded something for you,” she said. “He asked me to share it if anyone tried to interfere with your inheritance.”

My hands trembled as she pressed play.

Grant appeared on the screen wearing his favorite navy sweater.

For a moment, I forgot where I was.

“Hey, sweetheart,” he began.

Hearing his voice again nearly broke my heart.

“If you’re watching this, something has happened that I hoped I could prevent.”

He explained that he had discovered money disappearing from the business.

When he confronted my father, Richard became furious.

“I don’t know how far your dad will go to protect himself,” Grant continued. “But I know how much you’ve spent your life trying to earn his approval.”

I began crying.

“Brooke, you don’t have to sacrifice your peace to keep someone else happy. And you never have to surrender what belongs to you just because someone calls it a family obligation.”

He paused.

Then his expression grew serious.

“There’s one more thing. If something happens to me, please don’t automatically assume my accident was my fault.”

The recording ended.

I stared at the screen.

Grant had died while driving to meet an auditor in Syracuse.

My father had known about that meeting.

Suddenly, the accident no longer seemed as simple as I had believed.

“Meredith,” I whispered, “do you think someone wanted to stop him?”

She took my hand.

“We don’t know yet. But the investigators need to examine everything.”

The Daughter Who Arrived Too Soon

That night, my contractions grew stronger.

Despite the medical team’s efforts, my daughter was ready to arrive.

I was frightened.

Grant should have been beside me.

He should have been holding my hand, making ridiculous jokes, and telling me everything would be fine.

Instead, I held a nurse’s hand and whispered his name.

Shortly after midnight, I heard my daughter’s first cry.

She was small and needed extra monitoring, but she was breathing.

When the doctor brought her close, I saw Grant’s familiar nose and the delicate shape of his mouth.

“Hello, June,” I whispered.

June Margaret Ellison.

We had chosen her name together.

“Your daddy loved you before he ever met you.”

The following morning, Meredith arrived with news.

My father had been taken into custody following the incident at my house.

Our doorbell camera had recorded the confrontation.

It showed him forcing me outside while Vanessa stood nearby.

The investigation into the financial documents was also expanding.

For the first time, I understood that my father’s influence couldn’t erase everything he had done.

The Phone Call That Changed the Investigation

Three days later, Vanessa called from an unfamiliar number.

I answered with Meredith present.

“Brooke, your father told me the transfers were legal,” Vanessa began.

“Then why did someone need to copy my signature?”

She hesitated.

“You don’t understand. Richard owed money to people who were demanding repayment. Grant refused to release the funds.”

I sat upright.

“What people?”

“I don’t know all their names. Richard said we would lose everything if Grant handed the audit to investigators.”

Then Vanessa said something she seemed to regret immediately.

“We never wanted Grant to die.”

The room went silent.

“What do you mean, Vanessa?”

“I shouldn’t have called.”

“Did someone interfere with his trip?”

She ended the call.

Meredith immediately contacted the detective handling the investigation.

We couldn’t know what Vanessa’s words meant.

But I couldn’t stop thinking about them.

The Truck on the Highway

Eleven days after June’s birth, Detective Nathan Brooks visited me at the hospital.

He explained that investigators had recovered footage from a highway maintenance camera.

The recording showed Grant’s car traveling normally before a dark pickup truck approached from behind.

The truck moved dangerously close and forced Grant toward the shoulder.

His car left the road moments later.

Detective Brooks showed me a photograph.

I recognized the pickup immediately.

It belonged to Whitmore Freight Services.

The silver toolbox behind the cab made it unmistakable.

“Who usually drove this vehicle?” he asked.

“Darren Cole,” I answered.

Darren had been my father’s operations manager for nearly fifteen years.

He had attended Grant’s funeral.

He had even hugged me afterward.

“We’re examining his movements that morning,” the detective said.

I looked at the photograph again.

My husband had been traveling to expose missing company money.

Someone connected to my father had followed him.

I wanted answers, but I also knew the investigation needed evidence, not assumptions.

The Offer I Refused

Two weeks later, my father’s attorney contacted Meredith.

Richard wanted to negotiate.

He offered to stop challenging my ownership of the house if I cooperated in resolving the financial disputes.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“He’s offering to let me keep something that’s already mine?”

Meredith gave a tired smile.

“That’s essentially the proposal.”

I looked at June sleeping in her bassinet.

She had spent the first days of her life surrounded by medical equipment because of a confrontation that should never have happened.
