Part 2 of 3

“Who is he?”

Bennett’s answer came slowly.

“He worked with my father.”

The Secret Her Mother Never Explained

Harold Pierce had once been a senior adviser to Bennett’s father, Arthur Ashford.

Years earlier, Pierce had been removed from the company after a financial investigation.

Why would someone connected to Bennett’s family be searching for Madeline?

No one had an answer.

Then Bennett asked a question that seemed completely unrelated.

“What was your mother’s maiden name?”

Madeline hesitated.

“Bellamy.”

Bennett stopped moving.

His father had spent decades searching for a woman named Eleanor Bellamy.

Madeline laughed nervously.

“My mother was June Rowe. She worked in a public library. She wasn’t connected to your family.”

But then Rebecca asked whether June had ever given Madeline anything unusual.

A memory surfaced.

Her mother lying in a hospital room when Madeline was sixteen.

A tiny brass key pressed into her palm.

“Keep this somewhere safe, Maddie. One day you’ll understand what it opens.”

Madeline had carried that key for years.

Until Trevor took her key ring during an argument shortly before their separation.

When he returned it the next morning, the brass key was missing.

Dana began searching Trevor’s recent movements.

Within twenty minutes, she found a photograph.

Trevor stood outside a private office building.

Beside him was Harold Pierce.

Madeline stared at the screen.

Suddenly her marriage looked completely different.

The Phone Inside the Diaper Bag

A phone began ringing.

Madeline checked hers.

Nothing.

Bennett checked his.

Nothing.

The sound was coming from Sophie’s diaper bag.

Dana opened a side pocket and removed a small black phone Madeline had never seen.

The screen showed an unknown number.

Dana answered on speaker.

Trevor’s voice filled the room.

“Madeline, you should have stayed where I could find you.”

She tightened her arms around Sophie.

“What do you want?”

“The brass key.”

Madeline’s heart raced.

“You took it.”

Trevor laughed softly.

“I borrowed it. Unfortunately, the key isn’t enough.”

Bennett stepped closer.

Trevor continued.

“Ask Bennett what his father was trying to protect thirty-one years ago.”

Bennett’s face changed.

Then Trevor said something even stranger.

“There’s a trust, Madeline. And your daughter may be the final person needed to validate its bloodline.”

The call ended.

No one spoke.

Rebecca finally whispered:

“We need to find out exactly who you are.”

The Locket

The answer was hidden in something Madeline had worn since childhood.

A small silver locket her mother had given her.

Bennett recognized the tiny symbol engraved on the back: an old Ashford family crest.

Dana examined the pendant carefully.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a tiny data device.

Encrypted files appeared when Bennett’s technical team accessed it.

The first folder read:

ASHFORD LEGACY TRUST — RELEASE AFTER MADELINE’S THIRTY-FIRST BIRTHDAY.

Madeline had turned thirty-one four months earlier.

Inside was a letter signed by Arthur Ashford.

The opening sentence made Bennett sit down.

If Madeline is reading this, Eleanor kept her promise.

There were photographs.

One showed Madeline as a newborn.

Her mother—June, the woman who raised her—stood beside the crib.

But the document beneath the photograph identified June differently.

Guardian.

Not biological mother.

Another record appeared.

Birth name: Madeline Claire Ashford.

Father: Arthur James Ashford.

Madeline stopped breathing.

She looked at Bennett.

“Your father…”

Bennett stared back at her.

“Was your father too.”

The Sister He Never Knew

Madeline learned that Arthur had secretly fathered a daughter during a dangerous corporate battle decades earlier.

Her biological mother passed away shortly after Madeline was born.

Arthur believed certain people inside his company would use the child to gain control of a family trust.

So he entrusted the baby to June Rowe, a woman he trusted completely.

June raised Madeline far from the Ashford world.

Arthur passed away before he could publicly acknowledge her.

Bennett had never known he had a sister.

Madeline had never known she had a brother.

Suddenly Trevor’s behavior made sense.

His questions about her mother’s belongings.

The financial documents he repeatedly encouraged her to sign.

His interest in the brass key.

He hadn’t discovered Madeline’s inheritance after their marriage.

There was evidence suggesting he had approached her because of it.
