A Six-Year-Old Girl Sat Beside Me On A Flight And Said, “My Mother Says Grown-Ups Can Still Be Alive And Somehow Become Lost From Each Other.” Then Her Sketchbook Fell Open, And I Saw A Photograph Of The Woman I Had Loved Six Years Ago. Minutes Later, I Realized The Child Beside Me Might Be My Daughter.

Part 2 of 3

The estate manager.

And Adrian’s cousin Daniel Moreland, chief financial officer for three family companies and the man who would become interim chairman if Adrian stepped down.

Marcus watched Adrian carefully.

“Daniel has access, motive, and institutional knowledge.”

Adrian shook his head.

“Suspicion is not evidence, and whoever designed this operation wants us making emotional decisions.”

Sophie provided the next clue.

She remembered seeing a repairman wearing a gray shirt and cap.

He had told her the strange noise was merely “the house breathing.”

Then he warned her that little girls should not listen to walls.

Sophie’s stuffed doll contained a child-location tracker installed by Claire.

The repairman had briefly taken the doll, supposedly to repair one of its eyes.

The tracker therefore recorded his movements.

Its history led Marcus and Ethan to an old Moreland Estate Systems warehouse several blocks away.

Inside they found electronic components, soldering stations, and twelve more devices identical to the ones discovered at the mansion.

Production records revealed twenty-four devices had been manufactured.

Ten remained missing.

The workstation belonged to Leon Vargas, a contract systems engineer hired eleven months earlier.

His car was found at the airport, although no flight existed under his name.

Then Marcus discovered an unsent draft on a disposable phone:

West wing confirmed. Three children moved together. Phase two after 2300.

Adrian immediately called the mansion.

Nobody answered.

The backup lines were also dead.

They raced back to Greenwich.

The estate had lost power.

Emergency lighting had been disabled.

Adrian found the triplets alive in the ballroom safe corridor with Dr. Gable and several guards.

Then Claire screamed the question Adrian had forgotten to ask.

“Where is Sophie?”

PART 3: THE DOOR INSIDE THE WALL

They searched every room until Adrian heard a child humming beneath the old east staircase.

Sophie was curled behind an antique storage chest, clutching her doll.

“Sophie, what are you doing here?”

She pointed toward the paneled wall.

“The repairman came back, and he went through the little door.”

There was no visible door.

Marcus discovered a concealed latch.

A narrow section of decorative wood opened into a forgotten service corridor running behind the mansion walls.

The estate had been built in 1927, and multiple service passages had disappeared from modern security plans during decades of renovations.

Leon had been moving through the house without ever appearing inside the house.

They followed the passage until reaching Adrian’s office.

Leon was gone.

A black envelope remained on the desk.

Inside was a photograph of Adrian holding Theo, Miles, and Nora.

Across the front someone had written:

You built an empire by learning everyone’s weaknesses. Now we know yours.

The reverse contained another message.

Step away from Moreland Holdings before Friday, or your children will not remain safe.

Marcus immediately thought of Daniel.

Adrian did too.

Daniel would become interim chairman after Adrian’s resignation.

Yet the threat seemed almost too perfectly designed to implicate him.

Then Sophie tugged Adrian’s sleeve.

“The repairman wasn’t alone because a lady who takes care of the babies went with him.”

Three nannies worked regularly with the triplets.

Danielle Brooks, Caroline Mercer, and Priya Shah.

Priya, twenty-eight years old, became the first significant break.

She initially denied knowing anything.

Then investigators showed that someone had been following her brother in Toronto.

Priya finally admitted she had received encrypted threats accusing her brother of immigration fraud.

The documents were false but convincing.

Her instructions began harmlessly.

Meal schedules.

Medical appointments.

Which rooms the babies used.

Eventually, she was ordered to disable one hallway camera for ten minutes.

She insisted she never knew about the acoustic devices.

Adrian believed that portion of her statement because fear and guilt rarely looked as organized as the operation surrounding his children.

Recovered messages contained another code.

Tomorrow 1600. East service. Keep C4 clear.

Priya explained that C4 meant the portable fourth crib kept in Adrian’s office.

Security searched it.

Another hidden device appeared beneath the mattress frame.

Unlike the others, this one contained months of stored audio and video.

The earliest recovered recording showed Leon installing it.

Then a familiar male voice sounded outside the camera frame.

“Make sure Adrian never notices the indicator light.”

Marcus went completely still.

The voice belonged to Daniel.

Or appeared to.

Ethan analyzed the recording and detected artificial phase repetition associated with synthesized audio.

Someone had constructed Daniel’s voice.

“Whoever created this wants us to accuse him,” Adrian said.

Marcus frowned.

“Unless Daniel created fake evidence against himself because he knew we would detect the manipulation.”

Adrian almost smiled.

“That would be annoyingly sophisticated.”

Before they could decide, another recovered message appeared.

If Moreland refuses Friday, use C.M.

Caroline Mercer.

The second nanny.

PART 4: THE WOMAN WHO TOOK THE MONEY

Caroline denied everything until Adrian placed the recovered message in front of her.

Then her anger collapsed.

“I took money.”

Twenty thousand dollars.

She had provided Adrian’s schedule, Daniel’s movements, and the babies’ sleeping routines.

She insisted she never installed equipment.

Then she admitted something more important.

Her final instruction had been to persuade Dr. Gable to transfer the babies to a private pediatric clinic if the unexplained crying continued.

That revealed the real architecture of the plan.

The devices were designed to manufacture a medical problem.

The medical problem would justify moving the babies.

The clinic would become the controlled location.

Marcus traced the clinic’s ownership through three investment entities.

The beneficial owner was Evelyn Cross.

Adrian knew her intimately.

Everyone in the Moreland family did.

Evelyn was sixty-two, highly educated, impeccably calm, and had served as the family’s attorney for twenty-two years.

She handled trusts, inheritance structures, succession plans, and corporate governance.

After Isabel died, Evelyn personally helped Adrian rewrite the documents controlling Moreland Holdings if anything happened to him.

Marcus stared at the ownership records.

“Why does your family lawyer secretly control a pediatric clinic?”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“She should not control one at all.”

Caroline confirmed that the person giving instructions was an older, calm, educated woman.

Then she remembered something else.

A man had entered the nursery two months earlier and measured the wall.
