I Found A Pair Of Black La’ce Unde:rwe:ar In My Husband’s Gym Bag And Took It Straight To His Executive Secretary. Her Face Went Pale The Moment She Saw It. Then She Said, “It’s Mine—But Not For The Reason You Think.” Minutes Later, I Discovered My Husband’s Real Mistress Was Someone Else Entirely.

Part 1 of 3

PART 1: THE BLACK LACE IN THE GYM BAG

I found the black lace underwear on a Wednesday evening while emptying my husband’s gym bag before starting a load of laundry, and for several seconds I simply stood there holding it because my mind refused to turn the object into a conclusion.

My name is Claire Mercer, and Grant Mercer had been my husband for eleven years. He was also the CEO of Mercer Systems, a successful technology company founded by his grandfather and still closely associated with his family.

The underwear was not mine.

That much required no investigation.

I photographed it exactly where I found it, returned it to the side pocket, and spent the next two days saying nothing.

Grant was exceptionally good at explanations. He could enter a difficult board meeting with five angry directors and leave thirty minutes later having persuaded everyone that the problem was either misunderstood, manageable, or already disappearing.

I did not want his explanation first.

I wanted somebody else’s reaction.

The obvious person was his executive secretary, Elise Harper.

Two nights later, Mercer Systems held its annual Christmas party at its headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina. Employees filled the conference rooms with champagne glasses, appetizers, and carefully cheerful conversations beneath tasteful holiday decorations.

Elise was standing near her desk when I approached.

Until she saw me, she was smiling.

“Claire. Are you enjoying the party?”

“Actually, yes.”

I removed a cream envelope from my handbag and placed it carefully on the edge of her desk.

“I believe this belongs to you.”

Elise stared at the envelope.

“What is it?”

I opened it just enough for her to see the black lace inside.

Her face lost all color.

Not confusion.

Not outrage.

Recognition.

That reaction gave me the first answer I needed.

“Claire, I can explain.”

Interesting.

She did not ask where I found it.

Before she could continue, Grant appeared from the conference room so quickly that two nearby employees stopped talking.

“Claire.”

He looked at the envelope.

Then Elise.

Then me.

His expression changed immediately.

“What the hell are you doing?”

That response interested me even more.

He did not ask what the envelope contained.

He already knew.

I pushed it slightly closer to Elise.

“I’m returning something my husband accidentally brought home.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

“This is not the place for this conversation.”

“Apparently your gym bag was the correct place.”

Elise closed her eyes.

Grant reached for my arm.

I stepped away.

“Do not touch me.”

By then, several employees had stopped pretending they were not listening.

Grant lowered his voice.

“Come with me.”

“No.”

A senior vice president appeared near the conference-room entrance.

“Everything all right?”

Grant immediately produced his professional smile.

“Just a misunderstanding.”

I looked directly at him.

“No. It is becoming considerably clearer.”

Elise whispered:

“Please.”

I expected defensiveness from her, perhaps arrogance or embarrassment.

Instead, she looked frightened.

That frightened me.

Because humiliation and panic are not the same expression.

I picked up my handbag and started toward the elevator.

Grant followed.

He stopped the doors with one hand.

“We are discussing this now.”

“Move your hand.”

“Not until you tell me exactly what you think you are doing.”

I nearly admired the question.

He was still trying to make me explain myself.

“I found another woman’s underwear inside my husband’s gym bag, and I returned it.”

He looked behind him, apparently aware that half the office could see us.

Then Elise called from the hallway.

“Grant, let her go.”

The elevator doors opened again.

Elise walked toward us.

“Tell her.”

Grant glared at her.

“Elise.”

“Tell her now.”

Something passed between them.

Not affection.

Fear.

I stepped back out of the elevator.

“Tell me what?”

Elise swallowed.

“The underwear is mine.”

Grant said sharply:

“Stop.”

She ignored him.

“But not for the reason you think.”

That sentence opened a much larger door than the one I had expected.

PART 2: THE APARTMENT I DID NOT KNOW EXISTED

We moved into an empty glass-walled meeting room because Elise refused to continue speaking in the hallway.

Grant closed the door behind us.

Elise remained standing beside the conference table.

Her hands were shaking.

“I left the underwear in an apartment.”

I looked at her.

“What apartment?”

Grant answered immediately.

“A company apartment.”

Elise shook her head.

“That is not the whole truth.”

Grant’s stare turned hard.

“You do not know what you are talking about.”

“I approve the reimbursement paperwork.”

My stomach tightened.

Elise explained that Mercer Systems paid for a luxury apartment in Charlotte’s South End, supposedly reserved for visiting executives and senior employees traveling through the city.

Grant had increasingly treated it as private space.

“What does that have to do with your underwear?”

Elise looked mortified.

“I stayed there after the September company gala.”

I looked at Grant.

“With him?”

“No.”

“Then with whom?”

“My boyfriend, Marcus Reed.”

Marcus worked in finance at Mercer Systems.

Their relationship had remained private because employees were prohibited from using the executive apartment for personal purposes, and both knew they had violated company policy.

Elise had accidentally left the underwear in a drawer.

Months later, another woman found it.

“Who?”

Elise hesitated.

Grant interrupted.

“Claire, we are going home.”

I ignored him.

“Who found it?”

Elise whispered:

“Vanessa Cole.”

I knew the name immediately.

Vanessa was married to Thomas Cole, a Mercer Systems board member whose family investment fund owned a significant minority stake in the company.

My hands went cold.

“Why was Vanessa in that apartment?”

Elise gave a broken laugh.

Grant closed his eyes.

I looked directly at my husband.

“Grant?”

He rubbed one hand across his face.

“Vanessa and I became close.”

“How close?”

Silence.

“Grant.”

“Too close.”

“For how long?”

His eyes shifted away.

“Almost a year.”

Suddenly the black lace underwear barely mattered.

I had suspected the wrong woman.

Elise continued because Grant clearly would not.

Vanessa found the underwear inside the apartment and assumed Grant was seeing somebody else besides her.

The absurdity almost made me laugh.

My husband’s affair partner had discovered another woman’s underwear in his secret apartment and felt betrayed.

Vanessa threatened to tell her husband.

Grant panicked.

He ordered Elise to go to the apartment and explain that the underwear belonged to her, not another lover.

Eventually, Vanessa believed her.

“Why did the underwear end up in Grant’s gym bag?”

Elise pressed her lips together.

“He told me to remove it before housekeeping came.”

I turned toward him.

“So you knowingly carried another woman’s underwear home.”

Grant exploded:

“It was not sexual!”

I actually laughed.

“Congratulations. The underwear may be the least inappropriate thing you have done.”

Elise apologized.

I asked whether she had known about Vanessa before that Tuesday.

“No.”

I believed her.
