Prince Harry might’ve just proved ‘sad theory’ about Meghan Markle’s decision not to wear a poppy

When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made a surprise appearance at Kris Jenner’s lavish 70th birthday celebration last week, the Duke of Sussex unexpectedly reignited a long-running and heartbreaking theory about his wife.

The star-studded event, held at Jeff Bezos’ Los Angeles mansion, drew an elite crowd that included Oprah Winfrey, Jay-Z, Serena Williams, Mark Zuckerberg, Chris Rock, Adele, Snoop Dogg, and the host herself, Kris Jenner.

Meghan, 44, looked elegant in a sleek black turtleneck gown, while Harry, 41, matched her sophistication in a tailored tuxedo. Yet it wasn’t their outfits that stirred the most conversation — it was the small red poppy pin on Harry’s lapel.

The Meaning Behind the Poppy

For those outside the UK, the red poppy holds deep significance. It’s traditionally worn in November in the lead-up to Remembrance Day (November 11) to honor those who lost their lives in the World Wars and subsequent British military conflicts.

However, in recent years, the poppy has become a surprisingly divisive symbol — particularly when associated with Meghan Markle.

The Meghan Controversy: “Damned If She Does, Damned If She Doesn’t”

When Meghan and Harry wore poppy pins last year in a video message shared through their Archewell Foundation — supporting a campaign to end violence against children in Colombia — she faced a barrage of criticism.

Tabloids branded her a “fraud” and a “hypocrite,” claiming it was insincere for her to display the symbol after leaving the UK in 2020.

Fast forward to this year: Meghan chose not to wear a poppy at Kris Jenner’s birthday party — and once again, criticism poured in. This time, detractors accused her of “not caring” about fallen soldiers.

One user on X (formerly Twitter) pointed out the cruel irony:
“Last year Meghan wore a poppy and the tabloids tore her apart. This year she didn’t wear one, and guess what—same outrage. It’s the classic case of damned if she does, damned if she doesn’t. No matter what she does, they’ll twist it. That level of obsession is beyond unhealthy.”

Harry’s Poppy Choice Sparks Divided Opinions

Meanwhile, Prince Harry’s decision to wear the pin at the Hollywood bash drew mixed reactions. Some criticized the choice as tone-deaf, while others defended him, noting his military background.

“The poppy is taking me out. You’re in LA, mate, attending a Kardashian bash??” one critic wrote.

But another countered: “I may not be Harry’s biggest fan, but he served with the armed forces, and if he chooses to wear a poppy to a party, I see no issue with it.”

Online Support for Meghan

As the debate unfolded, many users expressed sympathy for Meghan, arguing that the pattern of public outrage only proved how unfairly she is treated.

“Its true. Just stop it,” one commenter urged. Another added bluntly, “It’s demonic. Pure hate.”

A third user called out the media’s inconsistency: “Last year you blasted her for wearing a poppy, now you’re offended because she didn’t wear one.”

For many, this latest controversy highlights how Meghan and Harry remain caught in an impossible double standard — criticized no matter what they do. Whether it’s the presence or absence of a small red flower, the couple continues to face the same exhausting cycle of judgment from the tabloids and the public alike.
