Part 1 of 3

My Husband Came Home After Three Years With Another Woman and Two Boys

The first thing my husband said after being away for nearly three years was not that he had missed me.

It was:

“Laurel, I want a divorce.”

I stood near the arrivals area at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, holding a small bouquet of white tulips I had bought that morning.

For three years, I had imagined this moment differently.

I had pictured Nolan Whitaker walking through those doors, dropping his luggage, and wrapping his arms around me.

Instead, he stopped several feet away.

And he was not alone.

Beside him stood a beautiful woman who looked to be in her late twenties. She wore an ivory coat and held the hands of two little boys who appeared to be about four years old.

They looked almost identical.

Dark hair. Gray-blue eyes. Strong eyebrows.

Then one of the boys smiled.

My stomach tightened.

I knew that smile.

I had been looking at the adult version of it for eleven years.

“Nolan,” I whispered. “Who are they?”

His expression hardened.

“This is Sabrina. The boys are Owen and Miles.”

I looked at him.

Then at the children.

“Are they yours?”

He glanced around the crowded terminal.

“Please don’t turn this into a scene.”

That answer told me enough.

The Three Years I Had Waited

Nolan had moved to Switzerland for what was supposed to be the greatest professional opportunity of his life.

He was a biomedical researcher specializing in gene-based treatments. When a research institute near Zurich offered him a position on an international program, I encouraged him to accept.

We told ourselves the distance would be temporary.

I stayed in Seattle because my career was there, our home was there, and Nolan insisted he needed only a few years to establish himself.

So I waited.

I ate anniversary dinners while staring at a laptop screen.

I spent holidays without him.

I helped his mother after a medical procedure because Nolan could not fly home.

Whenever he told me the research program was short on funding, I found ways to help.

I refinanced part of our home equity.

I covered expenses he said would be reimbursed.

I listened every Sunday while he described exhausting weeks at the laboratory.

And sometimes, before hanging up, he still said he loved me.

Now Sabrina shifted awkwardly beside him.

“Nolan told me you two had basically been separated for years.”

I stared at my husband.

“Separated?”

He sighed.

“Emotionally, yes.”

“You called me every Sunday.”

“Habit.”

“Three months ago, you told me you loved me.”

He looked away.

“I didn’t want unnecessary complications before the project was finished.”

Then he placed his hand around Sabrina’s waist.

Something inside me became very quiet.

I removed my wedding ring and placed it in his palm.

“Okay.”

Nolan blinked.

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

Then He Asked for Half the House

I had almost reached the parking garage when Nolan called after me.

“We still need to discuss the house.”

I turned.

“What about it?”

His answer came without hesitation.

“I’m entitled to my share. Sabrina and the boys need somewhere stable while we get settled.”

For the first time that afternoon, I smiled.

Nolan frowned.

“What’s funny?”

“Nothing. We can discuss it tomorrow.”

I reached my car before my hands began trembling.

I cried there for several minutes.

Not because I was afraid of losing the house.

Not even because another woman had returned with my husband.

I cried because I finally understood that the man I had spent eleven years protecting had been living a life I knew almost nothing about.

But Nolan also knew very little about mine.

For the previous eighteen months, I had been quietly building something of my own.

Its name was Northstar Biomedical Partners.

My business partner, Grant Ellison, was publicly listed as managing director, while I remained largely invisible because of confidentiality concerns connected to my work as an intellectual-property attorney.

Nolan knew Northstar very well.

What he did not know was that I had founded it.

And he certainly did not know that I controlled its largest investment fund.

Eighteen months earlier, Northstar had approved nearly $6 million in funding for the European research program employing my husband.

I had personally approved the investment.

Nolan had spent years believing I was simply waiting at home for his career to become successful.

In reality, one of the reasons his research had survived was because my company had helped keep it funded.

The Blue Folder on My Kitchen Table

That night, I opened every financial record connected to our house.
