Part 1 of 3

The Son He Had Waited Years For

For nearly ten years, my husband had treated the birth of a son as though it were the only thing that could make our family complete.

We already had four daughters.

Four funny, intelligent, beautiful girls who filled our house with drawings taped to the refrigerator, missing hair ribbons, school projects, bedtime stories, and laughter that could be heard from the driveway.

To me, they were everything.

To my husband, Corbin Mercer, they were somehow not enough.

When our oldest daughter, Paige, was born, Corbin smiled for the photographs and told everyone he was thrilled.

When our second daughter, Hallie, arrived two years later, his excitement was noticeably quieter.

By the time Brooke and Sadie were born, he no longer tried very hard to hide his disappointment.

He never blamed himself.

He blamed me.

Sometimes it came as a joke at dinner.

“Maybe the fifth time will finally be my turn.”

Sometimes it came as a complaint after visiting one of his friends who had sons.

“I just want someone to carry my name forward.”

And sometimes, when we were alone, his words were much colder.

“You know how important this is to me, Maren.”

I would look down and say nothing.

That became my habit during our marriage.

Silence kept arguments from becoming worse.

Silence kept the girls from hearing too much.

At least, that was what I told myself.

Corbin worked as a regional finance director for a growing property-management company in Colorado Springs. He loved appearances. He loved expensive watches, tailored jackets, exclusive restaurants, and anything that made other people believe he was more successful than he really was.

My father was everything Corbin wanted to appear to be—and that was exactly why I had never told him the full truth about Dad.

To Corbin, my father was simply Everett Hale, a quiet widower who had spent most of his career working for the government.

Corbin rarely asked questions.

A man who drove an old pickup truck and preferred flannel shirts did not interest him.

What Corbin never knew was that my father had retired from the United States Army as Lieutenant General Everett Hale.

Three stars.

More than thirty-five years of service.

He had commanded thousands of people, advised senior officials, and spent much of his career in military intelligence.

But at home, he was simply Dad.

And I preferred it that way.

The Pregnancy That Changed Everything

When I became pregnant for the fifth time, I refused to let myself hope for anything except a healthy baby.

Corbin felt differently.

At the twenty-week appointment, the ultrasound technician smiled and asked whether we wanted to know.

I squeezed Corbin’s hand.

She looked at the screen again.

“It looks like you’re having a boy.”

Corbin actually stood up.

“A boy?”

The technician laughed softly.

“Yes. A little boy.”

He kissed my forehead, called his brother from the parking lot, and spent the drive home listing names before I had even buckled my seat belt.

Within days, the guest room had been converted into a nursery.

Navy walls.

A wooden crib.

A framed version of the Mercer family name above the changing table.

Corbin told almost everyone he knew that his son was coming.

The strangest part was how differently he suddenly treated me.

He brought me breakfast.

He asked how I was feeling.

He attended appointments he had skipped during my previous pregnancies.

For a little while, I let myself believe he had changed.

Maybe the baby would soften him.

Maybe becoming the father of the son he wanted so badly would finally quiet the resentment that had been hanging over our family for years.

I should have known that love based on getting what you want is not really love.

Our son arrived during a late-spring thunderstorm.

After more than eleven exhausting hours, I heard his first cry.

The nurse placed him against me, and every worry disappeared for a few precious minutes.

He had soft brown hair, tiny hands and surprisingly bright blue-gray eyes.

I immediately thought of my father.

Dad’s eyes were an unusual pale blue, and so were mine when I was a baby.

I smiled.

“You look like Grandpa,” I whispered.

Our little boy curled his fingers around mine.

We named him Theo.

The Moment Everything Broke

Corbin entered the room about twenty minutes later.

He looked excited as he approached the bed.

“Let me see my son.”

I shifted the blanket so he could see Theo’s face.

For several seconds, Corbin simply stared.

Then his expression changed.

“His eyes are blue.”

I was tired enough that I almost laughed.

“For now. Newborn eyes can change.”

He continued staring.

“Nobody in my family has blue eyes.”

I looked at him more carefully.

“My father does.”

Corbin stepped backward.

His excitement had disappeared completely.

“He doesn’t look like me.”

“Corbin, he’s less than an hour old.”

“Who does he look like, then?”

I could hear something dangerous beneath the question—not danger in the dramatic sense, but the familiar edge that appeared whenever Corbin felt embarrassed or challenged.

I pulled Theo closer.

“He looks like a newborn baby. You’re being ridiculous.”

His face tightened.

“Were you seeing someone?”

For a moment, I genuinely believed I had misunderstood him.

“What?”
