The Woman Near the Bakery

Tuesday afternoons were usually the least dramatic part of my week.

After finishing another long shift at a children’s medical center outside Columbus, Ohio, I picked up my five-year-old son, Miles, and stopped at the grocery store before heading home. I was still wearing my navy scrubs, my hair was tied into a loose ponytail, and every muscle in my body wanted nothing more than dinner, a shower, and eight hours of sleep.

Miles sat in the front of the cart, happily talking about a cartoon he had watched that morning.

Then, without warning, he stopped.

His whole expression changed.

He grabbed my sleeve and pointed toward a young blonde woman standing near the bakery counter.

“Mommy, look! That’s the lady who plays in your bedroom when you go to work!”

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood him.

“What did you say?”

Miles pointed again.

“Her. She comes to our house when you’re working. Daddy tells me to stay downstairs.”

My stomach tightened.

I had been married to my husband, Grant Holloway, for almost ten years.

Grant worked for a regional financial consulting firm. He was dependable, charming, organized, and so predictable that I had sometimes teased him about it.

He kissed me before work every morning.

He reminded me when the electric bill was due.

He talked constantly about saving money for Miles’s future.

The possibility that he had been secretly seeing another woman felt almost impossible.

But children rarely invent details like that without hearing or seeing something first.

I looked toward the bakery.

The woman appeared to be in her early twenties. She had long blonde hair and wore a pale floral dress beneath a light jacket.

I walked toward her before fear could stop me.

“Excuse me.”

She turned.

“Yes?”

Then I saw the necklace around her neck.

Everything inside me went still.

It was a rose-gold necklace with a small sapphire surrounded by tiny diamonds.

Grant had given me that necklace on our fifth anniversary.

It had been custom made.

There was only one exactly like it.

I forced myself to smile.

“Sorry. I thought you were someone else.”

She gave me a confused look.

“No problem.”

I returned to Miles, left the cart with half our groceries still inside, and walked straight out of the store.

I didn’t confront her.

And I didn’t call Grant.

Something inside me warned me that whatever was happening was bigger than one uncomfortable conversation in a supermarket.

The Empty Jewelry Box

I left Miles with my mother for an hour and drove home alone.

Our house looked exactly as it had that morning.

White siding. Dark shutters. Two bicycles near the garage. A small pumpkin Miles had picked out sitting beside the front steps.

Nothing looked broken.

Yet the moment I entered, the house no longer felt like mine.

I went upstairs and opened the jewelry box hidden inside my dresser.

The space where my sapphire necklace normally rested was empty.

I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at it.

There was no misunderstanding anymore.

Grant had taken my necklace.

I slowly examined the bedroom.

At first, everything looked normal.

Then I found several long blonde hairs on the pillow.

A faint scent of vanilla perfume lingered near the sheets.

I didn’t recognize it.

I collected the hairs and placed them inside a small plastic bag.

Then I remade the bed exactly as I had found it.

At 6:20 that evening, Grant walked through the front door.

“Hey, Em! Where’s my little man?”

My name is Emily Mercer, and until that night, I had always believed my husband knew me better than anyone.

Apparently, I had never truly known him.

“He’s having dinner with Mom,” I said. “I had a headache after work.”

Grant immediately kissed my forehead.

“You work too hard.”

His concern sounded completely genuine.

That frightened me more than anger would have.

During dinner, I decided to test him.

“Something funny happened at the grocery store today.”

Grant looked up from his plate.

“What happened?”

“Miles pointed at a blonde woman and said she comes to our bedroom while I’m working.”

I watched his face carefully.

Grant didn’t freeze.

He didn’t hesitate.

He laughed.

“Seriously?”

“That’s what he said.”

Grant shook his head affectionately.

“That kid has an incredible imagination.”

Then he reached across the table and covered my hand with his.

“It was probably someone from the cleaning company. Remember, they sent a new person last week?”

We hadn’t hired a cleaning company in nearly four months.

Grant knew that.

He smiled directly into my eyes.

“Don’t worry about it, Em.”

I smiled back.

“You’re probably right.”

That was the moment I stopped wanting an explanation.

I wanted facts.

What Happened While I Was Working

Two days later, I ordered several small home-security cameras.

I installed them quietly while Grant was at work.

One faced the entrance.

Another covered the home office.

A third monitored our upstairs hallway.

The fourth was positioned where it could show most of the bedroom.
